New member, long time lurker. I own a limited edition Colt AR and an M&P 15/22. The Colt is a safe queen and I want to get an another AR for coyote hunting.

I am not up to date on the changes smith & wesson recently made to their M&P rifles so I came here to ask some questions before buying one.

I want an M&P rifle with the melonite barrel and 5r rifling. To my understanding the sport no longer comes in this configuration and I believe the M&P 15T does. Is this correct? What rifles come with the melonite barrel and 5r rifling still? I checked Smith's website but did not see anything that stated which guns came with the melonite barrel and 5r rifling.

Thanks in advance for any replies

The VTAC II, the MOE MID, and the 15T all have the 1/8 5R and what used to be called Melonite barrels. I read a post from a S&W rep on another site just the other day that confirmed the process hasn't changed, just the description. It is now called "Durable, Corrosion Resistant Barrel Finish". The rep was pretty cryptic as to why the change but suffice to say it is rooted in legaleze. The Sport still has the same "Durable, Corrosion Resistant Barrel Finish" but is now produced with a 1/9 twist. There is also a 1/7 twist model, like your Colt, the model TS. All of the specs are listed on S&W's site. You just need to spend a few minutes opening each rifle portal.

Modern Sporting Rifles - Smith & Wesson

The M&P 15T comes with the Melonite treated 4140 barrel, with the 1:8 twist and 5R rifling.

The MOE Mid and the VTAC II come with the CMV barrel that is Melonite treated and have the 1:8 twist, 5R rifling.

The current Sport barrel is still Melonite treated, but is now 1:9 twist with standard 6 land and groove rifling.

thanks for the speedy response gentlemen.

the "Durable, Corrosion Resistant Barrel Finish" was throwing me off. i was looking for the word melonite.

Yes, I think they need to pony up the bucks to use the word Melonite, or at least say "salt bath nitriding" or something similar. I have also seen them calling it "Maximum Corrosion Resistant" as well.

Just wondering what your "limited edition" Colt safe queen is...

Go with the M&P 15T (love mine and it's a great shooter). Just look at the barrel. It should say 1-8 5R just behind the flash hider.

not sure if you are being a smart *** or not with questioning my "limited edition" safe queen but it is a gold plated Colt match target ar15

He wasn't being a smart ***. He was just curious as was I. I was curious as to the type of AR-15 that would be a safe queen because I've never seen one that was just a safe queen. I had to google "Gold Plated Colt Match Target AR15" and could only find one picture.

If that's what yours is, no wonder it's a safe queen. If I owned one, I sure as heck couldn't bring myself to shoot it. I'd probably pull the firing pin out, mount it in a nice display case/box, and bolt it to my wall for display. :)

There were only 100 made. I was lucky enough to come across it many years ago and traded it for another gun I had owned at the time.

As long as it wasn't the gun Pat Garrett used to shoot Billy the Kid you probably did OK.

just wanted to say thanks to those of you who helped. i will be jailing an M&P 15T tomorrow :D

im already shopping for goodies
