SD40VE spare of the moment buy

my LGS ran a sale $279 out the door. thats when i got my sd40ve, 3 days later went and got the 9. dont use the 9 much outside of the range. my sd40ve is my EDC

since i have gotten a sd9ve and a SD40 (not VE, melonite slide and night sight)

-That's an absolutely killer deal! At that price it really would have been hard to not buy two of them! S&W really does have a winner with this pistol.

Matt

Sigma magazine malfunction

One of the S&W magazines supplied with my new Sigma SW40VE came apart while target shooting. I had been having trouble with stove-pipe jamming (using Federal 180gr FMJ). Found the base pad and follower, but not the spring. Anyone else have this happen to them? Wondering if it was a defective magazine, or if I should have the pistol checked out.

sounds like a defective retaining pin on the mag. hasnt happened to any of the other mags? if not i would assume its the mag

Love my SD40. I got it too because .40 is on the shelf all the time. Mine eats anything.

I made a spare of the moment purchase.Of this gun opinions good or bad?
Opinions are it's a great gun for the money! The most common complaint is the trigger pull, but Apex Tactical sells a $20 spring kit that makes it sweet. Also, it can be hard to get the 16th round in the mags, but a "maglula" solves that problem (I just load mine to 15 rounds). Another huge "plus" is Midway stocks replacement parts! I grabbed a spare recoil spring, extractor spring and firing pin while the gettin' was good.

For the price how is the quality?
My SD9 (not VE) was flawless out of the box! There were no scratches, burrs or rough edges anywhere. I polished the feed ramp, installed the Apex spring kit, added a Hogue wraparound and put about 500 rounds of JHP +P downrange without any issues.

Are they a good gun for ccw?
It may be a bit large for some. As long as I'm wearing the right shirt or jacket, I carry mine OWB in a DeSantis Speed Scabbard and couldn't be happier. :)

No wonder your having troubles it only a 14 round magazine plus 1 in the pipe makes 15

I purchased the sd9ve used for $229 out the door with 1 magazine. It was aalso a impulse buy. Got it home and called S&W for some info on it and they said it was only 10 months old. I have put around 500 rounds of junk ammo through it. Lots of steel and aluminum case and have NEVER had a slngle malfunction. I liked it so much I purchased a new sd40ve 2 weeks ago. I have only had it to the range once and put 100 rounds through it. 1 full box of PPU 180gr HP and 1 full box of federal champion 180gr. FMJ and also never had a malfunction. I have always owned Taurus pistols and have been happy with them but these sdve's are really winning me over.
Also it's true that the trigger gets a lot better after a hundred or so rounds. I already notice a big difference on the 40 after just 100 rounds. The trigger on the 9 is actually really nice and I like it a lot. I don't know how many rounds have been fired in it since I purchased it used.

Stop it everybody!! I keep hearing so much about the SD's I'm going to be compelled to buy one. After retiring I sold guns at Gander part time for a while. Often times folks would come in with a Sigma in mind. Not knocking Sigmas one bit but when I suggested they look at a SD too it never failed that they chose the SD. Incredible pistol. The price is just frosting.

You won't be sorry...the SDVE series (is it a series, if there are only two models?) is not only a great value, but good guns on their merits.

Sure, you can spend a lot more, and obviously there are some differences that come with more money...one of my favorite 1911s is a S&W SW1911 "E" series TALO special edition...and it's obviously a much nicer pistol...but it also cost $1200. The thing is, I wouldn't carry it at all...fear of dinging it up...so in a way, it's impractical. My SDVEs are sturdy workhorses, and while I won't abuse any gun, I won't mind getting honest wear marks on them. :)

I agree GKC. I certainly don't need one but they just attract me. I carry a Shield and have two SR series Rugers (9 & 45) along with more pistols and revolvers than my wife thinks I need. It would be a great addition for the newbies I instruct as a lower cost option for them to consider if they want a larger pistol. I would rate it as one of the best values available.

I'm afraid to post now the grammar police are watching:D but are the 40sw having any issues with ammunition?

-I see a few missing punctuation marks!:D But back to your question. The shops I've been in have a pretty good supply of .40S&W ammo on their shelves. 9mm ammo is pretty hard to come by unless you're just looking for self defense rounds. Unless you're actually asking about issues with firing the ammo. So far none for me...

SD40VE Great Buy!

I made a spare of the moment purchase.Of this gun opinions good or bad? I was going to get the 9mm but with 40sw being more at hand I bought the 40,and I didn't own a 40 yet

I had a friend who is also a FFL, Order one for me. I had to wait
8+ wks. to get it, but I am ever so pleased I made the move.
Price was: $299. + Tax.
What a sweet piece!

Is "going through it too fast" an issue? :p

From what I've read (haven't shot my SD40VE yet) it's not an ammo-sensitive gun. Each gun is an individual, though, so yours may be different...but on the whole, most owners don't report ammo problems.
