Afternoon

Well I finally made my mind up & bought a S&W 686+ (4"). (late 2013 build)

As expected the single action trigger pull was just so-so & the double action was well above the 12# that my trigger gauge maxes out at.

So 300 rounds through it & about 500 dry fires later I figured I should at least address the basic trigger functions.

When I took the gun apart & removed the trigger I saw something that I haven't seen in a gun before----

Right on the very front of the trigger on the leading edge of the cam that trips the cylinder lock is a little square (about 1/8"x1/8") that looks machined about .010" higher than the front edge of the trigger cam. (it does look machined on the front edge but stands proud of the main cam by a good .010")

That little square seems to be the only thing that contacts the cylinder lock to activate it.

I haven't been into a Smith for a few years now so this might be the new norm or might be a mis-built part.

Gun seems to work fine but had (& still has) a little itch JUST as the trigger is pulled in single action.

Has anybody seen this in a new 686 + before?

Any input appreciated---

"As expected the single action trigger pull was just so-so "

My mid '12 686+ single action is a delight.

Why did you expect a so-so trigger pull?

I'm with Invictus357. My Smiths have pretty good single actions, but I also shoot a lot of military rifles. Can you take a picture of the innards of the revolver? That may help explain things.

My 686 Plus 4"barrel was bought new about eight years ago. I just love the double and single action pull of this gun. I just received a Wilson Combat Custom Tune spring kit and plan to install it tonight to see how it compliments the revolver.

I wish I had taken a picture of the trigger when I had it out. (I will next time I take the gun apart)

In any case here is a picture that shows about what I am talking about.

I bought mine used and the single action was good, but the double action was terrible. Since I'm not a smith I sent it in to the factory for the Master Pistol Action Package and I'm pleased with the results.

New norm on the MIM triggers. Nothing to worry about, don't grind it off (another member did not long back). The modern parts are amenable to action work -- though in my opinion not as much as the older forged parts. Nonetheless, if you're displeased with the pull, you can have it improved or do so yourself if you're familiar with the process.

Thanks Hapworth

Any idea why it is on there? I really can't see it's advantage over the old way. (just seems strange)

Doesn't seem to hurt the function of the cylinder lock up as my check of the cylinder locking shows it in in the correct place & all 7 cylinders lock the same.

I have already improved the trigger pull to have a grit free single stage at 3.75# (feels short & sweet now)-- Darn thing should have come that way.

Double action is much better than it came but still a bit of stacking at the tail end of pull. I can't seem to get it below 8.75# without occasional misfires. (But )I shoot CCI small rifle primers in all my small-primer pistol re-loads as I have 25,000 of those from a bargain a few years ago I just couldn't pass up.

I am also using a 15 pound rebound spring as both the 13 & 14 didn't allow a fast enough trigger return for the splits I like shooting. (returned OK with the 13 just not as fast as I would like)

I will probably try a 14 pounder after the gun has seen 5,000 more rounds though it.

Not sure if I want to go to a longer firing pin or not. The longer pin wouldn't bother me but those things are breaking pretty regularly at my local plate & pin shoots.

Just a follow up if anybody finds this thread in the future--

Ok ,it does look like a normal new 686 mim deal.

See att. picture below--
