Last month I reported on Oregon's proposed Senate Bill that would require background checks for sales between acquaintances, family members, along with private parties. The bill was full of foolish items such as if you taught firearm safety and you loaned a gun to a student, you had to do a background check on the student and pay the fee. To get the gun back, you would be subject to a background check with a fee. Or, you give a gun to your son-in-law, and to make this transaction legal, you must do a background check on him along with the fee. There were actually more of these ridiculous situations that were hidden in the bill.

I attended the meeting where our governor and Gabby Gifford's husband Mark Kelly testified for this bill (SB 1551). I described it then as a "Dog and Pony Show".

Today, our legislators ended their session, with SB 1551 dying in committee. We know that it will be back, and the battle will again start over. But for now, WE WON !!!!!

Good news for those of us in Oregon. I also agree that 'outside interests' have no place attempting to influence legislation in our state. It's very frustrating. But thankfully we do have (surprisingly) some very strong pro-2A proponents in our state legislature. I write to them from time to time and some are kind enough to write back with an actual personal response - the others (usually the ones with a D after their name), send a canned response.

Heck, Gabby and her silly old man have no business being out without a keeper!!!! Only Gabby has a valid reason.........:p

glad it died in committee unfotunately the one that is just as bogus in Washington is going up for a vote this fall...we are working hard to put the word out to defeat it

So glad I left Oregon back in 1977 when I joined the Army. I grew up outside of Salem and went to the UO. Even back then, there was a noticeable impact of Californians who were polluting the state. UO was nicknamed "University of Southern California at Eugene". Oregon's a beautiful state, but the wacko politicians and the Portland liberals have ruined the place.

What id like to know about kelly is, why hasnt he been brought up on charges for what he tried and failed to do in Arizona? What makes him think that he's better that the average citizen?

Is Oregon more gun friendly than Washington?

Oregon is actually fairly gun friendly. We have some state legislators that do fight fairly hard against the anti-gun types. That, and our state constitution goes a step further than the US constitution in that it states an individual has a right to bear arms specifically for the purpose of personal protection. Oregon is also a 'shall issue' state. The biggest problem is that Oregon doesn't recognize permits from other states. Knowing some folks in Washington, it seems that Oregon is just a bit more gun friendly than the folks up north. Places like Portland and Eugene would love to restrict guns further, but the state preemption law prevents them from going to far. If you have a CCW here, you can carry just about anywhere legally.

As Chuck stated, it is a pretty liberal state, but there are plenty of us still here that believe in constitutional rights and fight for it every chance we get.
