Factory OEM Parts for Shield .40?

Hello,

I am the new owner of an M&P Shield. The downside is that my FFL accidentally ordered the MA Compliant version, and the error wasn't discovered until after transfer had been complete and it was taken home. I know, always read, always double check, I messed up :o

So while the trigger pull isn't entirely terrible (my previous carry gun was a S&W made under license PPK/S), it is on the heavy side.

As I do not reside in MA, and am not subject to those laws, I'm exploring the idea of buying a replacement, factory OEM trigger spring in the standard Shield weight (the 5.5lb). Does S&W sell OEM parts directly? Is there a third party website someone here knows about? I tried to search for it, but all I could find was the Apex kit, and while that would solve my problem, it's also a bit overkill for what I am trying to accomplish.

If it can't work out, I guess I'll just train my finger for the MA compliant pull and it won't be the end of the world.

Thanks in advance,

Brownells sells the parts, as does S&W. You might chat with S&W to see if they would do the exchange for you. It's my understanding (which might not be correct) that the MA trigger involves the trigger bar assembly, as well as the trigger return spring and sear block. In other words, you're not talking about a $3 spring.

Does seem to me that it's the gun shops problem, not yours. If it turns out to be a ~$40 parts exchange, I'd try politely busting some chops there. If you haven't fired the gun, it's only a paperwork transaction for them to take it back. The very least they can do is get you their discount on the parts.

BTW, changing sear blocks is a whole lot easier than changing parts inside one.

The two models are different SKU and most likely the gun shop distributor clearly lists the item with description as MA compliant... They should make some effort to work towards correcting.

Sorry, that's not how it happens in the real world. I work for a FFL, & all day long we get calls from the major distributors. It might go like this, ring, ring, ring, hello, ABC gun store, hello, this is xyz gun distributers, & we have some 9mm Shields available, do you need any, sure we could use 3 of them, send them over. OK by. Now, the distributor never told the store in Florida that these were Ma guns, but they can legally be sold in Florida. No SKU # was ever mentioned, just 9mm Shields. This is how we get 95% of our guns. There are no order forms with SKU #'s. All 9mm Shields no matter what the SKU # will sit in the same pile in the store, so it's up to the buyer to make sure HE gets the one he wants. This is why it's so important to buy your gun in person to inspect it before taking it home. You can't do that with an on line purchase. GARY

See if a S&W rep can advise what parts need to be changed. I do think it is strictly a spring change, but how many. There is the trigger spring, sear spring, and striker spring. It is my guess all three springs are higher tension, to get the 10 pound pull. Some would say there is no reason for a higher pressure striker spring, but this would cause more pressure against the sear, which would cause the trigger pull weight to go up. If you find the answer, please post what is changed to go from normal 6.5 pounds to 10+ pounds, for the MA guns.

Thanks for the replies. I have contacted S&W to see what it would take to change back to the normal trigger. I am awaiting a reply, and will place it here.

Unfortunately, S&W did not provide the information from even an academic standpoint.

Dear Customer,

Unfortunately, due to ATF regulations we can not ship you the components to alter your firearm from the way it left the factory nor will we bring it back in and alter the firearm from how it originally left the factory.

If further assistance is required please reply accordingly.

Sincerely,

Joe N.

So they won't tell us what changes would have to be made. We may never know unless we compare someone else's Shield to this one to know what parts may be different.
