.40 Shield Kaboom

I wonder what happened to LieutenantFF? I hope he is ok, being a firefighter I am hoping he just has not had time to check in. My wife has a Shield 40 so I monitor these threads for selfish reasons and have learned a great amount, but again my hope is that he will come back...

Suspicious to say the least. Not surprised in the least at how many simply jump on board with the deception.

A person can alledge ANYTHING...and apparently the internet forums of the world seem incapable of asking even ONE question. Meanwhile, idiots are out there blowing up guns....

So, are you saying LieutenantFF just made this up?

sw40ve

I know this is an old thread but I have the sigma sw40ve I had the same issue from it I called the tech line , sent emails on it as soon as that happened to me that was 3years ago and I haven't heard anything from then. So I reverted to plan "B" I have taken the gun to several gun dealers to see what they think. Everyone of the dealers have made contact with S/W and after they talk to them S/W never returns their calls. To me if this many of their models are having the same issue they need to address it. I could see an occasional problem with the ammo but not that many. Mine sent flames and out every opening which burned my hand cut the top of my hand and finger. I don't know for a fact but there is the possibility of setting rounds off in magazine as well and if it did that it could cause loss of limbs or worse death. So with that being said why wouldn't they at least return a message saying send it in so it could be checked out for safety reasons. I haven't fired this gun since the day it blew up on me. I have checked it with a feeler gage and it will still dry fire using snap caps but cant remember exacty how many thousands out it was before it would no longer fire. So if anyone has a way for me to actually get someone to respond to me for assistance I would really appreciate the help. I have posted my pics of the gun.

You call and what? They hang up on you?

Elaborate on your experiences?

I guess it's time for you to file a law suit on S&W.
Keep all your documentation from the gunsmiths, and any corresponds with the mother ship.

I thought it general knowledge that the .40 S&W cartridge was already at "+P" pressures(or thereabouts). Anything goes wrong(i.e., bullet setback, reloading mistakes, etc.), and the .40 is not very forgiving. personally, I don't care for small frame .40's. Way too kicky for me. Anyone remember the small alloy frame single stack compact S&W built several years ago. I forgot it's model name. I do know that S&W did not build it very long, as I don't think it held up any length of time. Great carry pistol w/ .40 ballistics. Just too fragile due to the .40's "horsepower". That is what the FBI calls "a clue"...lol! The .40 S&W cartridge is loaded too almost practical limits now. Reminds me of something about "Playing in a mine field".

One thing in this thread that keeps popping up and bothering me is +P...

There is NO sammi spec for +P .40 cal.

None. Zip. Nada.

[/url]

The reason for this is no one manufacturers 40 in +P. Some companies manufacturer 40S&W with very high internal pressure that approaches the upper SAMMI 40 specs (much higher than their standard 40 ammo pressures) but none label this ammo as +P, like they do with 9mm or 45ACP. There currently is no such thing as +P 40 ammunition, but there is commercial manufactured 40 ammunition that would qualify as +P, for the higher pressures. I use CorBon 40S&W 135gr JHP ammunition, that specs at 1325 fps and a whopping 526 foot pounds of energy. It is not labeled +P, but it exceeds the specs for most all other manufactured 40 SD ammo by a lot. I have fired well over 100 rounds of this ammunition through my Shield 40 without incident. You can hear and feel the difference when firing this ammunition versus other main brands of 40 SD ammunition. It has a lower, deeper sound, and has more felt recoil, but not uncontrollable recoil, just more.

I have called several times and get the typical press one for English press whatever number for customer service press whatever number for tech support I leave messages and no one ever calls back I finally gave up and tried the gun dealers hoping to get help they seem to get a hold of people but then they never hear back either.

So you've never actually talked to anyone. Leaving a message is about as good as sending an email.

Call back during business hours and talk to someone.

I've called S&W probably 6 times over the last year, never had trouble getting someone to talk to. I did have to wait a bit but never more than 30 minutes. This story sounds like........

Some of what does NOT bother me about these advertising ploy's used by some small ammo companies with the P+ 40 is that many of these pistol can also be bought in 357 sig and that round runs at what could be conceded a P+ and is based off a 40sw case dimensions. The 357sig is some 5 or 6000psi higher then a 40sw but has a better feed into the chamber. If a handgun is going to push the limits of a design they had better build it with a fully supported chamber and that's been a problem with a few makers from day one. The chamber gets undercut to aid feeding of the 40sw cartridge and theres the problem. Look at glocks barrel chamber changes or upgrades thru the years and you can find photos of the feed ramp to chamber changes for the better , below.

Much of the ammo out there today is loaded to lower performance levels than when first produced. Lots of bad QC out there over the last 5 or 6 years with the largest ammo makers with there cheaper lines of ammo too. WWB being one of them.

Seems like I have allways had a 40sw around with my current one a kahr tp40. I can fire ammo thru my kahr and take brass from a glock and sw and sig and find the kahr and sig brass have very little bulge in the brass . If you reload you need a bulge buster to straighten the brass back to factory specs. When I run used brass thru my bulge buster die and sort it in to two pile. Brass that been expanded heavily near the base and brass that breeze's thru the die so I have quality brass and light load plinker brass to reload or to salvage.

My carry ammo is a bit hotter than corbons. Underwood ammo loads to the max pressure and using modern powders it lets them make a faster cartridge that's safe BUT only in a full chambered pistol. My cc ammo is 155gr gold dot at 1302fps average. There 135gr is 1450fps. This brass will go thru the bulge buster dies darn near like a brand new starline brass case will.

There also some that think the best performance from a 40 is found in the 155gr and 165gr bullets and most problems and ka-booms are found with a 180gr.

10mm tends to be different as the cartridge feeds from a longer mag and with less cartridge angle as it feeds into the more supported chamber so ka-booms tend to happen less often.

Heres a great page showing unsupported and supports chambers for the 40sw-

Now pull your barreled out , drop the ammo you use in to the chamber and see how it looks.
