Hi All,

So I got an M&P 340 wore it to the range once and already notice some wear on the cylinder. Wondering if that is normal or not? This is my first revolver.

I owned and shot the heck out of the same revolver you have.....never had ANY wear on the finish of the cylinders?

Is that WEAR or......can you clean it off with a good cleaning product?

I tried cleaning tonight and no use. Seems like the finish wore off the cylinder. I checked with the holster I'm using, its a mitch rosen express line that I got from the crimson trace website and it rubs right in that spot. Seems odd though that a leather holster would take the finish off the cylinder like that.

That isn't wear, it's Lead! Just needs to be cleaned, or not worry about it since it will be back every time you shoot the gun. After you have been shooting revolvers for well over 50 years you will understand how I know!

I have the same gun with the exact same marks. They were there after the first cylinder were shot. I just sent it back to SW for eval last week, so I will let u know what they say. It def will not come off. Oh and its not lead as I was only shooting fmj ammo

But most primers are Lead Styphnate, which leaves metallic Lead deposits. There is also Graphite from the powder coating. Graphite and Lead leave almost identical appearing deposits.

Wait until you get this:

I'm usually more concerned about the wear to MY finish after shooting .357s out of the 340...

I had the same damage to my hand after shooting some 357's. It took about 2 weeks to heal and its still a little chewed up. I couldn't believe how much more recoil there was between the 38 spc and the 357. Some how I managed to tuff out an entire cylinder worth. :D

I have been carrying one every day for several years in a pocket holster. It has edge wear in places but none on the cylinder.

Does anyone know what the finish on the gun is? I looked on the website and it only says matte-black. I'm trying to figure out what product I can use to try and clean it.

What pocket holsters are folks using with theirs? I have the crimson trace grips on mine not sure if that will make a difference.

I have a 340SC (silver-colored finish) with Crimson Trace Grips. I use a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster. I trimmed the bottom of the holster flush with the muzzle so that the gun sits a little lower in the pocket.

From the way it comes off, I'm thinking black shoe polish! S&W needs to do something about a finish that comes off after one trip to the range...that's just not right.
Leather will take off old fashioned blue but it usually takes more than one trip to the range.
Maybe that one didn't get a proper bake to cure the finish .

Whatever you say preacher.... It's not lead. Used everything but battery acid and bead blaster to get it off and it will not budge. Impregnated into finish.

Not sure if this is the same thats on your gun, but this is a picture of my 340 M&P 20 minutes ago after a range visit with FMJ.

This is a picture now after a little Hoppes and a copper brush (not recommending you clean it with a copper brush regularly)

My marks are apparently lead/fouling/burned gunk.

I finally got an email back from Smith suggesting that the wear was not typical and they asked me to send the gun for inspection. Sadly they said its about an 8 week turnaround.

I guess that will give time for my new Mika pocket holster to come in.

What is the finish on this gun?

A couple hundred rounds thru my 340 and no wear on the cylinder....a box of 357 also. I tame the beast by holding my grip a bit higher (web between thumb and finger where hammer would be. Just sayin' it works for me. Like a M-80 going off in your hand!
