I've been reading and watching reviews on this one and I'm REALLY tempted to get one. Most say it's the best entry level AR for the money but, none of my LGS's have one so I'd have to order it blind without having handled one.
Any pro's or cons to this model?
If you've visited the picture thread, you've probably seen 15-Sports and not realized it. The pro's and cons are summed up in the picture of my rifle.
Pro: It functions the same as any other AR-15. It is compatible with all aftermarket parts. The omission of a forward assist and dust cover has not been detrimental in all of my shooting. Out of the box, the 15-Sport is the perfect keep-it-simple-stupid, lightweight AR-15. Mount a Primary Arms Microdot and a simple 2-point sling and you're good to go. The 15-Sport's offers one of the best values.
Con: It is compatible with all aftermarket parts. I love my 15-Sport, but part of me regrets modifying it. I turned the perfect keep-it-simple-stupid rifle into something else. If you are even thinking of modifying the 15-Sport beyond a sling and optic, think about what you want the end result to be. Buy a rifle that is factory equipped with as many of the features and parts as your budget allows. It ends up being less expensive over the long run.
Other things you'll encounter...
The early production 15-Sports are factory equipped with a 1:8 5R barrel. The current production 15-Sports are factory equipped with a 1:9. While we like to discuss the theoretical differences, there isn't really a practical difference.
The 15-Sport is overgassed. While some see this as a negative, I see it as a positive. The slight overgassing means that the 15-Sport will function with all the different commercially available .223 and 5.56 ammunition. Mine has no issues cycling the least expensive Russian polymer coated steel case, bi-jacketed projectile ammo.
I have two AR-15's: the 15-Sport and a full-feature AR-15. I have not had to use the forward assist nor ever had to nudge the bolt into battery with my finger. For me, a forward assist is a "nice to have" not a "must have".
