I've been reading and watching reviews on this one and I'm REALLY tempted to get one. Most say it's the best entry level AR for the money but, none of my LGS's have one so I'd have to order it blind without having handled one.

Any pro's or cons to this model?

I just bought mine on sale and due to work and weather have been unable to get to the range. Most annoying.
I did the research and am very pleased with the result a good light weight carbine. Now all I need is a 20 round Pmag for the bench. and a couple of quiet hours at the range.

Who notes the sale price was $599.99, good in NE FL 2014

I own one, it was my first M4 style carbine. Glad I bought it. Paid $650 about 3 years ago. Glad it did not have a FA. Love the trigger guard. Never missed the dust cover. I wish they would offer a OR Sport without the front sight post. It is a great carbine. Mine has over 1,000 rounds, no issues. I have changed out/upgraded serveral parts. Would do it again.

If you've visited the picture thread, you've probably seen 15-Sports and not realized it. The pro's and cons are summed up in the picture of my rifle.

Pro: It functions the same as any other AR-15. It is compatible with all aftermarket parts. The omission of a forward assist and dust cover has not been detrimental in all of my shooting. Out of the box, the 15-Sport is the perfect keep-it-simple-stupid, lightweight AR-15. Mount a Primary Arms Microdot and a simple 2-point sling and you're good to go. The 15-Sport's offers one of the best values.

Con: It is compatible with all aftermarket parts. I love my 15-Sport, but part of me regrets modifying it. I turned the perfect keep-it-simple-stupid rifle into something else. If you are even thinking of modifying the 15-Sport beyond a sling and optic, think about what you want the end result to be. Buy a rifle that is factory equipped with as many of the features and parts as your budget allows. It ends up being less expensive over the long run.

Other things you'll encounter...

The early production 15-Sports are factory equipped with a 1:8 5R barrel. The current production 15-Sports are factory equipped with a 1:9. While we like to discuss the theoretical differences, there isn't really a practical difference.

The 15-Sport is overgassed. While some see this as a negative, I see it as a positive. The slight overgassing means that the 15-Sport will function with all the different commercially available .223 and 5.56 ammunition. Mine has no issues cycling the least expensive Russian polymer coated steel case, bi-jacketed projectile ammo.

I have two AR-15's: the 15-Sport and a full-feature AR-15. I have not had to use the forward assist nor ever had to nudge the bolt into battery with my finger. For me, a forward assist is a "nice to have" not a "must have".

Take a look at these videos.

Thanks for the reply's folks. I'm actually glad it doesn't have a dust cover or forward assist. For what I'll be doing, I won't need either of them. I'm just glad to see it has a large ejection port. I've seen a few non-dust cover versions (not S&W) at Walmart, where the ejection port didn't look much larger than an empty shell.

I've already called one LGS and they said they can get me one for $630 OTD. I have 3 more I need to call so I can compare prices.

If you want to take a short drive in the country, call either Nathan or Luke at Nathan's Pawn and Jewlery in Chatsworth, GA. They gave me the besty deal (I could find at an LGS OR online. After all was said and done, transfer, tax, everything, they beat Buds and Cheaper Than Dirt.

It was well worth the drive from Jasper...and my in-laws live there so I go often anyway. :D

EDIT: Old fashioned Georgia folks...closed Sunday and Wednesday.

It is one of the most accurate out of the box AR's I have encountered, including a DDM4v7 and a Colt 6920! I really believe it is due to the Melonite treatment vs. a chrome lined bore.

I have 2 Sports, I was out at the range today and put another 200 downrange without problems. I shot 5.56 and .223 both 55 & 62 grain. The two guys who I shot with now both want sports. $630 is a good price for a gun in hand, better than a $600 gun that you have to look all over to get.
I've made the same changes to both Sports:
Put on the UGT American quad rail
VTAC sling
One I put the Bushnell Red Dot and on the other the Nikon P223 scope.

Were they 5.56mm? There is nothing "large" about the ejection port on the Sport. It is the standard size.

Got mine when It first came out. My first and only AR-15, has not given me any trouble, eats anything I feed it, and is more accurate than I am. Great Firearm!

^ Let the wholesaler's "Gun Genie" app do the work for you. Use the drop downs, enter your zip code, check the box that says only show in stock items.

When you locate the sport, click on it. Next page, click "instant quote".

Yep, lots of Sport guys here. :D The Sport is virtually the "everything you need , nothing you don't" rifle. There are many "Black Rifle" guys who see the Sport as a cheap entry level rifle with no forward assist and no dust cover. It is in fact an inexpensive gateway rifle leading to many fun adventures with none of the frustration of other "entry level rifles". I should clarify "inexpensive", as that pertains to getting one, after that you're on your own (although there are many here who are willing to draw you into their fantasies and support your habit once you're there).

Here's how my Sport has come to look.

Good Luck and good shooting. :D

^ Where's the 2-Stage trigger? Seems like a waste of perfectly good KNS Precision anti-rotation pins. ;)

That's next on the list. The KNS pins fit the budget at the time, and we must have priorities. You know Troy Alpha, Lantac muzzle brake, Aimpoint (which should be home soon). The factory trigger I polished up has me covered for now. :D

Beating Buds prices is saying something but, not for CTD. Their prices are anything but cheap.;)

Based on the title "does anyone own and M&P15 Sport", I thought this was some kind of a joke thread. Tons of people own them and they are fairly highly regarded. It seems like half of the posts in this section of the forum are "My new sport..." some days. It's bad enough that when I'm feeling grumpy I'm ready to suggest The M&P15 Sport get it's own sub-section (kinda like the 15-22) just so there is a place to talk about M&P15's that aren't a sport.

as to the original question: If you buy one, you'll be in good company.

The local gun store had them on sale this week for $559. It was everything I could do not to buy one. They actually ran out of stock by the time I got there, but were willing to special order one for that price. I still managed not to buy it.

I also managed to get out without buying an EOTech EXPS2-2 for $460. That's the best price I've seen anywhere. This store has a "no sales tax on optics" policy so that was the out the door price. Man that was hard to pass up.

I'm so proud of me. ;)
