To each his own, but why would you want to use a speed loader on a revolver cut for moon clips? Moon clips are much faster, take up less space and keep your brass together.

The 5-star loaders are works of art. Much too nice to drop on a concrete floor during a speed load. Plus using the twisty knob design is slow (did you notice they turn the opposite direction from the HKS loaders - I was told this was to avoid patent infringement). I have one 5-star for my 586 that I use to initially charge the cylinder when I come to the line. It then goes into the pocket and it is Comp III's only during the COF.

Moon clips - the best thing since sliced bread.

Dammit, why did I have to click that link? Now I gotta get one of those!

The five star speed loaders are awesome. I have the eight shot one for my 627 that was not cut for moon clips and use it for my 327. I like it better than the moon clips. Ed

Wow, those are nice, but pricey. Would hate to even drop them and get them all scraped up at the range during shooting comp/qual courses, let alone losing one. I have the 7-shot 686 Performance Center .357 and HKS fortunately makes speed loaders for them. I have wondered about the sources desire to manufacture speed loaders for 8-Shot R8's and 10-Shot 617's...

I have the 5 Star Speed loaders for my 642 and my 686 PLUS. I like them a lot! I think the counter clockwise rotation for releasing the rounds is actually an improvement over the HKS. I always used the Safariland Comp I in the past but I like the 5 star just as well or better. Also, I got a lame e-mail from Safariland when I inquired as to whether they had plans to make speed loaders for the 686 PLUS. My reply was clearly from someone whose first language was not English.

Once you have them in your hand and see how well made they are. They will seem like a bargain. In this case you really do get what you pay for.

There was a guy on here making the ten shot 617 speed loaders I bought one of those and it is great too. I'm not sure if he is still making them or not. Ed

I have had my 5Star 8 shot loaders for awhile and have been very pleased. When I ordered them ,they were kind enough to change the release to work the same direction as the HKS that I use on every thing else. Do not know if they still will do that or not. I should say that I believe I ordered 6 or 8 at that time. A great product by genuinely nice people.

I use moon clips for my R8 , easy and fast !

My TRR8 is in jail for 10 days. So I have not tried the moon clips. Do they work well? They seemed fragile. Sturdy enough to carry in your pocket? Thanks!

Moon clips are great, but, finding the right moon clips for the 8-shot N-frames can be problematic. If you are just using them at the range, strictly for convenience's sake, then any clip that fits will do. If, however, you are using them in competition, you need to find the moon clip that holds the ammo you use, the most rigidly. This problem may be compounded some for rimmed cartridges because SAAMI does not have specs for the extractor groove on rimmed cartridges as they do for rimless.

Most moon clip manufacturers that make clips for the .38/.357 cartridges will specify with which brass they work best - but that doesn't necessarily mean it holds the cartridges rigidly. It takes some trial and error to find what works best. I tried four different clips from three different manufacturers before I found the right clip for my 627-4 (.38 Super). One I zeroed-in I bought a bunch of them.

For the 8-shot revolvers, I'd also recommend the BMT tool for loading and unloading the clips. A bit expensive, but worth every penny.

To answer your question - I wouldn't pocket carry, unless they were rather loose-fitting voluminous pockets. There are various belt mounted carriers that aren't any more obtrusive than a speedloader carrier. If you are going to pocket carry, avoid clips with large center openings - the more steel, the better they will stand-up to abuse.

I may have to consider these speed loaders if I decide to go with a 327 2" Performance center since it's an 8-rounder as well.
