I got an email from someone that had viewed my YouTube video: S&W M&P Shield 40 Conversion to 9mm . He said he ordered the 9mm barrel directly from S&W. I replied to him that S&W has all barrels listed with a asterisk (*) : *=Restricted to factory trained armourers

He said he ordered it and they did not ask any questions, just the address where it was to be sent. He emailed me today and said the barrel arrived today. I phoned S&W today at 2:30pm EST. I called 800 331-0852 extension 4125. I spoke to CSR who gave me the following S&W parts numbers:

Shield 9mm Barrel # 42199
Shield 40 S&W Barrel #42185

S&W has not been releasing any parts numbers for the Shields, saying they didn't have a parts listing for them, yet.

The CSR told me they were out of stock on the 9mm barrels, but do have the 40 barrels. He said they were priced at $61.00 each and there was a $6.50 shipping fee.

So I do not know if S&W is selling all the M&P barrels, but I would think if they are selling Shield barrels they should also be selling the FS and Compact barrels. Anyone wanting barrels, please give them a call and let us know your results on this thread.

Bob

This is a bit of a thread necro, but possibly a relevant one for future searches.

I recently picked up my 3rd S&W - a 40 Shield and, like many others, I put in an inquiry for a barrel and got the "We do not sell barrels - they are factory installed only" response. :(

Really? Last I checked, it wasn't exactly rocket science to slip one right into the slide. What if someone picks up one second hand with a pitted barrel?

The worst part is, I'd have entertained picking up a Storm Lake barrel, but they don't make one in 3.1" for the shield. All I wanted was a factory #42199, but it seems like it has become the white elk of searches. (and yes... I didn't say I was looking for a conversion barrel, or anything like that, simply that I was looking for availability on the exact part number and how I could go about acquiring one).

Here's a shot of my new acquisition - I've done what I could to it since picking it up last Saturday - nothing major, just a Hogue Jr, and painted inlays so far. The under-bore laser is on its way, as well as a Don Hume holster.

This was my first inlay "paint job" and I've got to say, it came out a lot better than I expected. The color if you're wondering ... is Revlon Eclectic Blue. The "how to" I found on Youtube here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-2RthEz3MM

Grr you resurrected a 6 month old thread. Got my hopes up when I read the the title & thread only to be deflated after I realized the dates..

6 months?! Try a year and a half! I too was disappointed when I read the title and only to find a really old thread come back to life.

LOL... You guys are EASY!! Especially after all the recent posts (as recently as a few DAYs ago) saying that people were specifically told 'No Way'. :)
When seeing threads like this, Check The OP Date. :D

So can we all list "factory trained armourer" on all our resumes?

After all, I've been "installing" my own barrels every time I've cleaned my full size and compact since I've bought them.

Same here...

Ha if u guys think installing ur barrel after cleaning is wild. How about installing the slide back onto the frame?

Maybe we should call the factory to do it for us.

I'm pretty surprised they sell any parts at all. A rep told me on the phone that I couldn't buy a factory rear sight for the M&P because it was a restricted part. His tone was normal until I asked about the sight and then it was as if I just asked to buy the machine that stamped the serial numbers.

I just got off the phone with with S&W and ordered a 9mm FS barrel for my 40S&W. They didn't blink an eye, I gave them the part number (turns out it was older part number but she was able to correlate it to the new one). Anyway, no issues at all, $103 shipped. They are a bit behind as today is the last day of the two week summer closure, but she said it should ship by Wed.

1-800-331-0852, select retail parts option.

They will not sell Shield barrels however.

Ahh.. interesting. I wonder why they exclude the Shield. Seems like every other week a new Shield 40 issues thread pops up - it might be in their best interest to get some 9mm barrels in them :).

Read in places that S&W have had to service .40 M&P pistols that malfunctioned with 9mm barrels, they quit selling them. I'm not sure I believe that. More than likely they caught on to what folks are doing and figure they'd make more money selling the whole gun than just barrels.

That said, I picked up Stormlake conversion barrels for my C and FS for right around $100 each. OEM 9mm barrels do fit a little loose in .40 breech faces, which is by design, so a .40 barrel cannot drop into a 9mm slide. Not likely to cause a major malfunction, but I'd rather get a proper conversion barrel if the price is the same or just a little more.

BTW, I checked with Stormlake and they said they will make 9mm conversion barrels for the .40 Shield next year. Sure to be a hot seller.

They (S&W) just sold me >>a FS barrel<< one, so not sure. The not fitting part goes against pretty much every thread on the subject I could find - did you actually try a S&W 9mm barrel in a 40S&W slide, or read that somewhere? Not being argumentative, I genuinely would like to know - I can cancel my order I'm sure as it won't likely ship for several days...

I love how everyone keeps saying 40 shield problems keep coming up. Where are they??? One bad post comes up and the entire supply of shields must be bad then

Yeah, I'm headed toward 2000 rounds in mine. Mostly 180 grain Federal HST. If it doesn't blow up at 2000, I guess I'll have to go on to 3000.
