Do you remember back when you or your mother always kept a bottle of "real" Coke syrup in your refrigerator for what ailed you? Now I know the coke syrup used at the fountain is no longer what it used to be,but is the real medicinal version still available at your pharmacy.
The real stuff you always needed a prescription from your doctor.
I spoke about this with my doc and all we could come up with was some lame over the counter stuff called "Cola Syrup" and of course it was totally useless!

My Dad would just go to the drug store soda fountain and bring it home in a to go cup. Then it went into a glass jar that was always in the refrig. It was in the back of the refrig when I moved my Mom out of the house.

Some of us would go over to the base pharmacy and get some GI Gin.

Which is-
Cough medicine with alcohol and codeine. In the 1960s and 1970s, soldiers complaining of a cold were issued a small bottle of cough medicine. It contained alcohol an codeine. Many drank it down for the buzz.

arjay, yes it did, hence the script due to the cocaine contained in the cocoa.

Yes we did! Commonly called "GI Gin", included in a "cold pack", just go to the dispensary and ask for a "cold pack". Only 2 ounces but it DID wonders for your moral... and stopped your cough if you had one! They used to also give a capsule for pain that if you open it up, contained a bit of powder and a small round pill. Many ditched the powder and saved the little pill until they had several... I've seen soldiers walk on broken legs after a few of those!

Never seen that but the barracks I was in had 3 or 4 beer machines and a quarter would buy you a can of beer. You fly I'll buy. :D

Would the capsule "Darvon" ring a bell?

Was outlawed by the FDA... it's in the opioid category.

Some fifty years ago I was a medic. For some reason we had several of our personnel who kept asking the doctor for refills of Darvon and/or Dexamyl. Don't know why.

One type that was outlawed is making a come back.. as the real truth is being known...
