M&P22 Compact

One followed me home today. Paid too much, but the place I would otherwise have shopped was the price difference in gas. As well, the store had some 22lr set back for gun purchasers, at a fair price. The other store has been out for months.

It will go to the range mid-week.

Question - what ammo (speed being the biggest question) has been used? The manual is very vague (at least it doesn't say "don't use" anything in particular.

I did talk a guy out of buying a mosquito - he got the M&P as well.

And remember there is a 222 round box of Winchester .22lr promotion on the S&W site. Easy to do online, but you'll need a scan or picture of the receipt to send with the submission.

Needed another .22 like a, oh well, we all know...

So this was my experience-

I started with a mag and topoff full (11 rds) of Federal AutoMatch - 11 rounds, flawless. Flawless and accurate!

another mag and topoff full (11 rds) of CCI Standard Velocity (Both Fed AM and CCI SV are 40 gr RN bullets) - flawless and also very accurate.

Then I opened a new box of Federal Value Pack 36 gr. HPs, 550 rds. I put something along the lines of 150-200 worth of these. I'd say each my Dad and I had 5 malfunctions each. Failures to feed, failures to extract, 2-3 clicks with no bang , extracting round and next bang fine.

I TOTALLY chalk that up to just being a brand new gun, autoloading rimfire that is breaking in on the fly and still brand new, and HP ammo can choke up an autoloading rimfire pistol any day of the week. So I'd be lying if I didn't say there wasn't 5-10 malfunctions, but again, I do not consider it a big deal. -- ALSO, some of mine were no doubt from testing the trigger reset point and getting a little cute with it.

After that, I finished with 4 mags full of CCI Mini Mags, which it seemed to REALLY LOVE, the sound was a more-than-before thunderous BOOM and perfect accuracy, last mag was as rapid fire as possible, and all good.


So it really likes Federal AutoMatch and CCI Standard Velocity, LOVES CCI Mini Mags (and these WERE the 36 Gr HP btw) and pretty much eats the Federal Bulk ammo.

I have a feeling that by the time I finish the 550 rd box it will shoot them hiccup free, it is just getting started in what hopes to be a life of 10,000s and 10,000s of rounds fired in fun and health

What they had for me to buy was 2 bricks of federal 510 - 40 gr solid /1240fps. They also offered, but I turned down, the CCI SV 40gr ~1000fps. I know that won't work in my other 22, so was hesitant.

I'll try the Federal first, and keep notes. Would be great if this one was not so demanding of ammo I can't find.

I was originally eyeing the ruger as my next pistol, but now I might wait for a NY compliant M&P22C.

Thanks to everybody who posted a reply on how to adjust the windage. My box didn't come with the allen wrench, but now that I know where the adjustment point is, I can buy one at the local hardware store. My .22 Compact has now had about 300 flawless rounds through it: 50 CCI Stinger, 100 CCI Mini-mags, 100 rounds of CCI Tactical and just about) 50 rounds of Remington Goldalloy Hollow Points. Not one, not one failure to feed, fire or function (eject). The only issue I had (had) was it was about an inch to the right at 25 yards (and WAY high when I first shot it). I will now make adjustments and be a very happy camper. Thanks again.

I had (had) a Walther P-22, that had jamming problems with several different types of ammunition. I traded it to a friend for his Ruger SR22 who was aso having jamming problems with his gun - they both appear to be very fussy with what ammunition it/they use - and they both work fine with CCI Mini-mags, but little else will function 100%. I was the first to go buy the Smith & Wesson M&P .22 compact and he NOW he wants to trade me back the Walther P-22 for my Smith. I told him NO WAY! Go get your own. I hope that helps.

Yeah, I had heard that about those two guns. My son has a Sig Mosquito that is the same way. Very picky about what ammo it eats. I'm glad I'm hearing good things about the .22c. I think I might buy one before months end.

I too had a Sig Mosquito years ago and the only ammo that would run in it were CCI MiniMags. The S&W M&Ps both full size and compact are light years better than the Sig.

Finally got my first hands-on with one yesterday. I am most impressed! Why can't they get the safety on the centerfire brerthern to work as positively as this one? I didn't want to chance a dry-fire, but is it a SA type trigger, or is there a typical M&P style pull?

I wrote to S+W earlier today, asking that they consider making a non threaded version compact, for those states where threaded is prohibited. Already received a reply, stating the standard thank you for writing, followed with, your request is being forwarded to the marketing department management team for review and consideration. They say you don't get what you don't ask for. Im asking. LOL

Every version of the M&P22 has a threaded barrel (full size, CA Model, and compact). The way they make a "non-threaded" version (like the M&P22CA) is by changing the cap that covers the threads at the end of the barrel. Instead of the cap that has the wrench slots for easy removal, they use a completely smooth cap that is red Loctite'd on at the factory. You can make a non-CA Model M&P22 CA legal (i.e. non-threaded barrel) by replacing the slotted cap with the smooth cap (have to get it from Walther, it's the same cap they use on their P22CA) and Loctite'ing it on. I just went through this with the CA DOJ and they signed off on it.

I would say do the same for the M&P22C, but others have said that the thread pitch is different. If that's true, the Wather P22CA barrel cap will not fit and you might have to pin/weld the slotted cap to permanently attach it. Hope this helps.

I have both, SR22 and MP22 compact. So far I shot winchester and federal bulk pacs and CCI minimags through them, and both of them are rock solid, at least with above ammo. When holding both of them, MP22c feels more solid, at least for me. SR22's advantage is that it has repleaceable rubber grip, so it is easier to adjust for different hands. Negative on on SR22 is the way safety operates - down for safe and up for fire. Both come with 2 magazines. Also, SR22 can be dry fired without snap caps, MP22c, not sure, couldn't find anything in the manual. SR22 is has ambi safety/decocker and ambi mag release, MP22c has only ambi safety, mag release for leftys has to be changed by the user. SR22 comes in more configurations, so it might be easier for you find one that is best for you. For me, both of them are winners, and you will not go wrong with either one of them. I reccomend stop @ FFL and hold both of them. SR22 will be pobably cheaper than MP22c. In addition, Ruger currently runs promotion. If you buy SR22, you will get box of 222 round pack of winchester bulk ammo plus 1 extra magazine, so that promotion is better deal then Smith's promotion. And hey, get SR22 now, take advantage of the promotion, and once MP22c is available in NY, buy it. You never can have enough guns

i noticed on palmetto state armorys website they had them on clearance already, so last night i picked one up for $266.99 shipped. i couldnt pass that up. i just sold my ruger 22/45 lite for 650, decided i didnt need that much money into a .22
seen a couple videos on this new compact 22 and planned on getting one when i found a good price. cant wait to get it!

I've never been a fan of the white lettering on the M&P22. I had the guy that engraved a couple AR lowers for me tell me that the Aluminum Black used to turn the engraved area black again will also remove the white lettering. He did that to my M&P22 and I did my GSG 1911-22, and decided to do it to the M&P22 Compact I picked up yesterday.

I actually kinda like the white lettering on the 22's....helps me to pick up the correct gun at the range. After a while, all these all black guns DO. look pretty identical, especially in a flock.

But that was a good tip for how to do that. Thanks.

So far mine is running well. It HATES Winchester Wildcat and Federal LRN in the 510 and 510B boxes. Most everything else works, even CCI SV.

851 rounds so far. Even Rem Golden Bullet and Winchester 222 boxes worked.

Great information! I have been searching for a way to remove different types of color filled lettering. Some like it, but to my eye it screams cheap and gawdy. I'll be experimenting with this the first chance I get!!
