Going to be a bad winter?

Some of the old timers around here claim that if there is an overabundance of chokecherries in the spring, we're in for a heckuva winter.

Well, the chokecherry bushes that run along my ditch bank by the creek are covered this year. I don't know about you, but I threw an extra cord of hardwood into the wood shed this week. Just hedgin' my bets.

In this part of NY our chestnuts are roasting. It's been July-like hazy, hot and humid here all week. September is supposed to be perfect weather- low 70s, low humidity, bright sun and cool nights.

As far as signs...My leaves are still green and hangin' tight. Our feral freeloader cat is still looking svelte and in summer coat. I did see a small flock of Canadian Geese flying in a southerly direction this morning, but I think they just got spooked out of a farmer's field. No sight of any other migratory birds.

Last winter struck early and was pretty much relentless 'til early April. I'm not sure what this winter will bring, but I'm gonna file a complaint if it's anything like last year.:D

According to one of out local "Rain-Dancers" asits with high humidity here and will remain so--were supposed to get an actual""coldFront"" here in about a week. Cold hitting what wehave now--means some major thunderstorms--which I have been long looking forwards to.

What surprised me this Summer--is the highest temp we got here in CC-was 100-110 F with the highest heat index being about 111 F. Two summers ago--we were averaging 100F and heat index of about 11 F to 120 F here in CC.I feel sorry for those who will freeze but--im looking forwards to some refreshing colder air.

This winter I hope to be better prepared for heavy snow...moving up to a 10hp snowblower...my little 7hp just isn't up to the task sometimes. Can't do much about the cold except lay in some wood, gas up the generator and hope the power stays on.

I've noticed the same. While it's still hot the leaves are already turning yellow and starting to fall. Has been since mid August, which I thought was unusual

Just wondering about this upcoming winter as I have seen a few things that TO ME do not look good.

I live in upstate NY and many of the trees are turning color much faster than usual. Acorns have been dropping for the last two weeks, never saw that this early before, deer are changing into their darker coats, many are almost totally changed and my 3 cats are already into heavier winter hair (they are 100% inside cats BTW)

In no weather guesser but it looks ominous. What say you people of the S&WForum??

All well and good, but are the Indians gathering extra firewood?:D

CC where is that?

Maybe I had the same premonition and didn't know it.
I just finished insulating my hunting cabin. It was not fun putting up batting when it was 100 degrees inside.
If you're right, I'll be glad I did.

I sure hope it snows tons. Four and five years ago we had record snows, 90"+ both years. I was tired of shoveling so I bought a snow blower. It hasn't snowed for squat since. Barely enough to take a shovel to. I actually enjoy those early morning sessions of throwing snow, out by myself, getting a job done and not having to worry about someone bothering me. Bring on the snow, I am ready for it.

A weather-guesser whose opinion I trust, ex-USAF weatherman, PhD meteorology, says that Polar Vortex thing is going to happen again. He believes this winter will be as bad as last winter here in the midwest.
