Prison Gangs.

Perhaps if we had our version of the Gulag, or camps for "Re-education through Labor" we might not have such a high incarceration rate. And why aren't we in 1st Place ? Two words-"Due Process".
We should find a tropical island, at least 100 miles from the coast, establish a completely self sufficient, perhaps self governing or at least self administered prison colony, anyone sentenced to five years or more to be sent there. Let them grow their own food, etc.
Prison gangs-let them prey on each other.

closely related is my long held idea.
cargo ships have a finite service life, and some are scrapped each year for that fact.
load em in the hold and set the condemned ship on its was to Somalia, on auto nav, and only half the fuel to get there.
door locks on timers to invoke this sequence after its on vapor.
1 mill in counterfeit bills rains down.
all cells unlock.
edged weapons spill out onto the floor.

Excellent article on who runs things in the big house...

How Gangs Took Over Prisons - The Atlantic

No offense to Calif C.Os but--to allow that bad of an operation happen is pathetic. Here in texas--yep--we had problems but nothing like what they have. Im not talking about the thing about gangs--since that scumis everywhere-no matter what unit one is at. What imtalking about--is the vast reported amount of cell phones and other contraband that gets into their prisons.

I dont know about ther ebut--here-anything that comes in--mail-packages or whatever? gets opened and screened in the mailroom. After my foot was busted in a bad acccident--I did duty there because I couldnt work the regular areas because of a cast and a boot. If we found anything not allowed? like drugs, smokes, lighters, money etc...the items were either returned or destroyed-the inmate--if trying to get drugs--or money--got written up and had to go to Court. Anyone trying to send in drugs--reported and visited by the police.

here-if this stuff was brought in by any employee--and or Correctional Staff? they used to just get fired. Now--they get arrested and sent to prison.

The gang problems are always there no matter what one does. However, they can be controlled. I saw riots where I was at--even rec-yard riots BUT--the inmates knew when to known "it" off--for fear of possibly getting shot by a picket officer. I spent about 50% or more of my time in pickets. Most assigned there were always Vets and who knew their way with weapons. I spent all of my picket time in pickets 2-3 and 4--which had the best views of where the massed population would be able to go.

Here--on a rare occasion--a cell phone could be snuck in--always by a CO--who didnt take their job serious and they were always easioy found out and canned.

VERY rarely--illegal drugs could be snuck in and actually delivered but--when cought? the inmate ratted on their "supplier" so fast you would be dizzy drunk.

Ive worked at; Maximum Security,Medium Security, Transfer Facilities--which are actually the most dangerous--because tha'ts where they are sent to get classified) to working at a Trustee Camp.

We had the usual article named gangs and off-shoots.Personally, I never had any trouble with any from any gang except once--from someone with the pistoleros. Othe than that one time--they actually respected you for the most part--unless you came n trying to be Rambo or Sergeant hartman.

Back when...when I was still a LEO, it was easy to tell who was a ex con, by their tatoos. Now it seems as if everyone has them, it's a whole lot harder to figure out who is the ex con and who is some Jyreen, home on leave...Mom with a rose on the arm, or the name of their ship seems to be a thing of the past.

Some with the total body tatoos might be able to be identified as a ex con, but any more I wouldn't bet on it.

WuzzFuzz

Actually, its still easy. Also, usually the loudest-foul-mouth in public--is always one who spent time in prison. I hear them all the time spouting off at bus stops, on buses etc.Ive met on ocasion--some ive supervised and who actually greet me and introduce me to their wives and family-usually this happens at restaurants or shopping in some store. They usually would say that I was one that always treated them fair and square--and their wives and kids would always thank me for doing so. They knew I had no ax to grind and that if I did "come down" on someone--its because they did somehting stupid and deserved it.

A buddy of mine was set on getting a job as a CO. That was until one of the inmates told him the name of his wife, kids, home address and a bunch of other things that scared him on his first day! He quit after his shift.

That was a numb-skulled thing for him to do. All he had to do was to notify his supervisors that some inmate knew him and they would have moved that inmate to some farm across the State. That happened to me-about 6 weeks after I first started working for the State.

We see these freak shows everyday. What do these 16 and 17 year olds think they are going to do for a living the rest of their life? Why will parents let them get facial tattoo`s? I believe they should be denied any government financial help whatsoever. I resent my tax money being spent on the type. Where do they get the money for the tat`s? You see people on welfare with them.

Young woman ATTORNEY told me of interviewing with Senior Partner of one of the largest local law firms. She had a visible tattoo on her hand. Gentleman said "well I know you are either a former US Marine, inmate or very stupid and only one of those answers will help you in this interview."

I always get a kick out of that true story.

23+ years in corrections here in Illinois. I started as a CO in Menard, a max joint that at the time was the last stop for our worst offenders. Scalded 4 times and stabbed twice while there. The Administration had allowed the gangs to have the run of the place for decades, but finally started taking the prisons back in '96. It was nicknamed "Strip a Vic" and we finally got control back. Now 18 years later, the liberals have let it get out of hand again.

You you rather we adopted the policies of some of the other more enlightened counties? A thief, cut off his hand and let him go. Stoning, whipping, caning, summary execution and a host of other punishments that would be considered cruel and unusual here help reduce the crime rate and prison population in those countries.

Which way would you prefer?

FBOP Retired, BTW.

I would prefer that we quit putting people in prison for things that shouldn't even be crimes.

I find it disturbing that the US, which supposedly cherishes freedom, has the 2nd highest rate of incarceration in the world, behind North Korea.

Disturbing, yes. So what is to blame for the high incarceration rate in the U.S. - is it the criminal justice system/government, or is it the large numbers of people in this country who rationalize and excuse crime, thereby giving a green light to criminals to stay the course? I blame the latter.

I think a lot of it has to do with the privatization of prisons that's going on nationwide. These for profit outfits lobby for higher conviction rates to fill their beds.

The thug/gangsta/ex-con look/fad is in.

I'm curious to see what these wanna bes do when they come to the realization that people don't take them seriously with their cool, neck, facial, and hand tattoos when they try to get a decent job or when/if they have contact with LE.
People get tattoos trying to be different and unique. In high school only one or two people in the building had tattoos. It's mystified and interesting.

And then i was in the army. I didn't know a single person who didnt have a tattoo until this new kid showed up in my squad. He has never tasted alcohol, smoked a cigarette, or had sex. And he was 19 years old. There wasn't anything wrong with him in the head either. He was smart, witty, funny, and quick minded until a pretty girl was present. He was shy. He got over that and figured out women right as my contract ended. He still has no tattoos and has never smoked a cigarette. Another thing i noticed about him was he prayed at every meal.

He's the most unique and different person I've ever met. I wish i knew this before i had 8 tattoos

Very few of our guest were innocent victims railroaded by some over zealous cop/DA. Most off them were veterans of the system who have been given multiple chances to get their minds right before coming to us.

A segment of the population is where they are because they plead to a lessor charge or were given consideration cooperating in the investigation (helping to fry bigger fish), not because they are good and decent citizens who just had a momentary lapse in judgement.

When I went to high school in the early 90's, nobody had tattoos

Not to me.

It's not just the military, in my age group, myself and maybe one, two at the most, are the only folks I know of who don't have tattoos.
I'm unique and different because I DON'T have tattoos.

The staff's would riot and injure the inmates.

Nope, we weren't allowed to take them in the fence to start with. The riots were at the staff entrance before we got inside.

Problem is RF doesn't respect boundary lines. If the jammer were to prevent someone just outside the facility from calling 911 in an emergency the lawsuits would be filed before the funeral.
