New 642 snub nose carry

I have been carrying for about 2 years and I've tried everything from Shields to Glocks to whathaveyou. I have settled for just a 442 that I've been carrying for many months now. No more rotations. Just one gun. Same gun each time. Everything else have become range toys.

Pocket carry primarily but I switch to AIWB when I have an outer garment on. Easier to draw from AIWB and not uncomfortable to carry that way.

Why a 5 shot snubby? I have three criteria in a carry gun: 1) I have to be carrying it and with a snubby that's easy to do daily (2) if I have to draw and shoot it has to go bang. Revolvers do that more reliably than semis and (3) I may be wounded before I return fire so shooting from a bad position or with a wounded hand is a possibility. Revolvers won't malfunction because of a limp wrist. I'll get five for sure each time.

Reloads? I carry one speed strip. Sure, a Glock with 17 rounds in a spare mag and 16 on tap in the gun is a nice luxury. But most normal folks will probably never draw their gun in anger. And if they did, their assailant probably mistook them for a soft target and wasn't anticipating a fight let alone getting shot at. If I had to use all 5 shots AND reload, I either stumbled into a gang war or someone has a hit out on me.

But 99.99999% of the time my 442 and five for-sure shots will do the trick; if I do my part and avoid trouble, or make my shots count if I somehow fail to avoid trouble.

My wife upgraded her M60 Chief Special to a 642 and hasn't looked back. She likes the light weight and the kool hammerless design. :)

I love my 442. I honestly don't think I'll go back to a belt mounted gun. It took me 10 yrs to figure this out. I used to tease my lil brother about his 637 being an old lady's gun, a pea shooter. Now it's my go to gun 90% of time...

Congratuations on your gun. I have one and carry it often. I changed the grips to Pachmayr compacts. They handle the recoil great for a light weight gun.
If you're pocket carrying, get a pocket holster. I use a Mika. Much safer than carrying your gun loose in a pocket.

I carry a 442 in a Mika. Great carry combination.

Another fan, it's light, easy to pack, I'm comfortable with my skills with my chosen load (Gold Dot 135gr jhp +P short barrel). Not what I always carry but when I'm carrying a wheelie, it's the one.

How bout those grips. Very nice, what would they be?

I CARRY MY 642-1 BY ITSELF OR AS A BACK UP GUN, DEPENDING ON THE CIRCUMSTANCES. MINE WEARS A SET OF CT, LG-405s WHICH CUSHION THE BACK STRAP. I STUFF IT W/ GOLD DOT, 135 GR PLUS P, FOR SHORT BARRELS. I CARRY IT EITHER IN A POCKET HOLSTER OR IN ONE OF LEFTY @ BELL CHARTER OAKS FINE CROSSDRAW RIGS. HE'S A FORUM VENDOR……..

Hi, I've never carried before but I'm trained and efficient with all types of guns. I chose the 642 airweight because is light and can handle +p loads. Another reason I like it is because its safe to carry in the front pocket because of the long trigger pull. Just wondering besides this being an awesome looking gun why others might choose this as their carry gun.

The Model 642-1 is the IDEAL CCW revolver! You can drop it into a pocket and carry it all day without notice. The "PRO" model include a cylinder cut for Moon clips which makes recharging under fire "better..."

It weighs 14 oz which is LIGHT by any standard, and chronographed defensive loads produce in excess of 200 lb-ft of energy!

While mine is a 36 no dash, bobbed hammer and dao, it is great with 110 silvertips, especially for an early 60's gun.

S&W642

I have carried the 642 or the 442 as a backup gun for years. I set mine up with rubber Pachmyer grips because I carry in an ankle hoster and did not want the body moisture to ruin the standard grips. Also, have it set to use laser sight with S&W grips that came from Crimson Trace. Great CCW guns

I carry a S & W 442 and my wife carries a 642. Both have laser grips. Great carry guns especially in the warmer months (most of the time in Texas) but I can carry just about anything in the cooler months. The weather dictates what, and how, I carry.
With all the threats we are faced with now days I never leave home without some kind of pistol on me.

I decided my 442 carried everyday in my front pocket was the best compromise. I don't even know it's there. Sure a double stack pistol would offer more fire power, but I knew I would never carry it everywhere as I do the 442. My revolver is more than enough protection and is carried with three 6 shot speed strips.

My Model 642-1 has a moon clip cut cylinder from a Model 442 that I purchased from a fellow Forum member. The action is very smooth and has become my wife's favorite "leave me a loaded gun when you're traveling piece" - it replaced a Model 34-1. It used to be my EDC until I had a situation involving a pair of Boxer (dogs) at very close range, which caused me to rethink my EDC choice. My EDC now consists of a Model 38-0 (top in photo) with a NY reload Model 638-1 (bottom left in photo). Both are equipped with Crimson Trace LG-405 laser grips and loaded with standard velocity ammo. I almost always pocket carry and use either an Uncle Mike's #3 or DeSantis Nemesis pocket holsters. By the way, my Model 38-0 has a nickeled cylinder from a "kaboomed" Model 38 (some one else's kaboom, not mine) for my version of a MSP (Michigan State Police) Bodyguard.

Regards,

Dave

What happened with the boxer dogs? Did you have to shoot them, and if so was it "enough gun"?

Hi Exdetsgt:

Sorry, I didn't mean to leave you hanging, but I didn't want to bore others who have already read my story:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-re...76212-got-humpback-disease.html#post137894936

I was discussing the incident after the fact with a friend of mine who has no experience with firearms. She asked if a small pocket revolver would be capable of stopping a pair of large dogs. She turned a little green around the gills after I told her my plan was to bury the muzzle of the revolver into the dog's back before pulling the trigger. From experience I can assure you that a point contact wound can be both quite effective, as well as impressive to see.

Regards,

Dave

I carry a 637 (basically same thing with an exposed hammer, which I bobbed). The reason I have the 637 not the 642 is ONLY because I got a great deal on a used one.

I think you hit most of the reasons why. Another reason for me is just a strong affinity towards revolvers. J frames in particular. Simple, reliable, very accurate (with practice), and convenient to pick up and go.

Also I appendix carry with a Remora holster.
