Hey Everyone,

I thought I throw this out there and see if anyone has insight. I have my CHL (concealed handgun license) in Texas and am planing to drive back east to visit family, but New York doesn't like to honor any other states CHL's, so carrying in New York isn't an option. I can carry as far as PA, but not over the state line.

My question is...does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on how I can keep my guns in PA? Thanks in advance!

You might rent a safety deposit box at a bank for the time you are in New York or find a reputable gun store that might store it for you.

I don't think that you will find too many banks that will allow a firearm in them. Un certain but believe that it is a federal law not allowing firearms in banks except for security.

I'd suggest a state police Barraks. Most have lots of gun boxes, they're typically open 24/7

I'd.call a few some might be less liberal than others.

I suggest checking on which states have a reciprocity agreement with Texas, so you can be sure that you are not violating any laws while traveling. According to the attached link, PA does recognize the Texas permit. Whatever you do, be sure to stay out of Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and, as you have noted, New York. You might even want to consider avoiding Philadelphia, since they have their own handgun laws, even though the state is responsible for all gun laws.

The state police idea sounds reasonable. I'll be heading for one of my local gun shops tomorrow, so I'll try to remember to ask if gun shops have the ability to hold a gun for someone traveling through the state.

This is incorrect. It is my understanding there is no such federal law, nor any state laws to this effect (again, that I'm aware of). I carry in banks quite often without any issues. Some banks have "no gun" signs posted and if so, you have to follow whatever law your state has about those signs, but that's it.

I concur

Right you are sir, right you are. When I got my CCW license I had read about the whole Walmart Walk many times and sure I went to try it but, I had also read the REAL way to steel yourself and test your nerve was to try the banks while carrying. In FL for example, a no-guns sign carries no weight of law nor power. You can walk right up to a bank counter and make a deposit just like you can go to Burrito Boyz restaurant that might display no guns allowed signs. In the case of banks, you just don't do anything stupid you're fine. In the Burrito Boyz scenario, if a place displays a sign it doesn't matter, what matters is if they ask you to leave (for guns or for counting the beans.) Once they ask you to leave (because you accidentally printed or displayed your gun or because you argued with staff whatever,) if you do not leave you're trespassing. I regularly carry into my bank as a matter of practice and never have had an issue. However, as of yet I've never encountered a no guns sign so it's not been an issue.

As far as the original question, I'd just do some checking and calling.i have read a few things about police stations storing guns for people and ive read a cop or two say their forces would never even consider it. Best way to find out is simple, polite phone calls, explain your situation and questions and ask. I am thinking a bank might be a good idea, renting a box might not be such a bad idea. But if the cops in PA will do it for free, then hey..

Good luck!

NY laws might prevent you from carry, but check the law for keeping/transporting the gun locked in you trunk, or for that matter someone's home. You can't carry and they have strict buying/selling rules, but check on transporting and storing. Those laws may be very different than carry. I live in the free state of Florida, and do not claim to know all of the NY laws. Or you could just hide it under the spare tire, etc., during your visit. What are the chances for a search of your vehicle?

Found this but it is for transporting through, not about staying:

Transporting Firearms Through New York

The best way to travel through NY or any state that has restriction is to carry a copy of Title
18-Part 1- Chapter 44 926A of the federal code with you. Some law enforcement may not know the law. DO keep the firearm in a locked box. Keep ammo in another locked box. No ammo in Magazines or speed loaders in the trunk or if no trunk as far back in the vehicle as possible in a locked box. By NY
Law if you are traveling across the state and can legally possess the firearm where you started and
where you are going you can transport it as above. But if you stop in NY and spend the night in a
motel/hotel/camp ground etc you are in violation of NY law and can be arrested if found with a
firearm. Stopping for gas and food would most likely be OK but this is not a given in NY.

United States Code Title 18 - Part I - Chapter 44

§ 926A. Interstate Transportation of Firearms

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any
political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from
transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any
lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other
place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the
firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver's compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console. www.handgunlaw.us

Don't lump us all in. PA is good, Vermont is even better.

Wasn't meant to offend and I know there are gun friendly states in the East as well, it's just that everything is so close together that many times a trip across a bridge changes everything.

No worries. Didn't take it as an offense. Just that everyone lumps us in with NJ, NJ, DC, MA :(

TRANSPORT of a handgun is covered by FEDERAL LAW isn't it? The state can't stop a person from transporting a gun properly cased.... ya just can't carry in a state that doesn't honor a given CCW license . Different states do require varying modes of meaning "cased " or broken down , etc ...
If your handgun is unloaded with no ammo in the same locked container I'm thinking you should have no problems other than being in a pinko-commie-bedwetter-haven .....

YMMV
not a lawyer and didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express either ....

You can transport your firearm through NY under federal law as long as your not staying in NY is my understanding.
