If you woke one morning and society had collapsed

"If you woke one morning and society had collapsed"

You mean like the morning I woke up a few years ago and there was no coffee in the house?

"and you had to bug out - what gun would you take if you could only take one?"

Since your question is very specific - "you had to bug out -- what gun ........you could only take one."
I'll play along. I would choose a 5.56x45 carbine. Probably an Arsenal AK SLR 106-F with folding stock or a SCAR-16. Either fits in a back pack. Second choice would be an AR-15 carbine.

2nd only to what gun for bear threads!

I'd bug out 1 mile away to the gun store. It is very secure, having bars on doors and windows and they have plenty of guns and ammo!!!

1st - I'd bug out to nowhere. If people can't drive normally during rush hour traffic what makes you think that the roads are going to be obstacle free in a large panic. If everyone is going somewhere at the same time and in a hurry I sure wouldn't want to be in the middle of that epic traffic jam.

2nd - every time this question comes up everyone answers the same thing...."I'm going to the woods/mountains/forest". Soooo.....guess where everyone is going to be? The deserted areas today will be overpopulated tomorrow. A that hunting people talk of doing is going to dissappear very fast. There are only so much rabbits and deer in those woods where everyone is trying to get to.

So unless it's an immediate threat....ie...nuclear/flood/fire that is near me and I'm in danger right now this very second I'm staying put. I have food at home, weapons, ammo, and shelter. Of course this doesn't make me any more or less safe but if my neighborhood is moving out that puts me in a position where everyone is trying to get to...ALONE! I know my area and I can defend my home.

Only to be shot and killed by one of the hundreds of people who had the exact same idea.

My wife and I are not young and in no shape to BUG out anywhere except by car. The "by car" plan is 40 minutes away, in normal traffic, to a log house owned by friends who are similarly prepared with a creek and garden in the back with one way in. We live in a cul-de-sac. Bugging in. We keep 50 days of food, water, lighting, batteries and a generator with fuel. Wood burning stove with 2 cords of wood. Dog food and meds. A short wave solar charged radio. A .12 gauge, a .22 and an AR with 2000 rounds of ammo. Lots of lights and batteries. Plywood to board up windows and our 90 lb. dog who hates everyone but us. The biggest concern for us is social unrest for whatever reason and someone hacking the grid or utilities, which we feel is the more realistic scenario and is shared by some of the more credible intelligence folks. It's actually been kind of fun to get to this point of readiness but we hope of course, it never happens.

If society collapses, and a bear charges me on the same day, at least
I'll be able to render the bear fat for cooking grease.

Also will have bear meat for sausage. Most of the one I shot years ago
went into homemade sausage. It was great on pizza.

I plan on staying right here in my rural setting and banding together with neighbors. If I was away I'd try and get back here and bring my wife back here too. We'd likely have family members too and planned for that.

Last year visiting my niece and her boyfriend in Vegas he showed me his bug out bag and his intentions for getting out of there. I have to admit his intentions were good and he prepped well but did give them little chance in spite of his good plans.
Thankfully they've moved back to Michigan and near family and their support now.

I don't think it like they movies and TV shows either and think few of us will survive such a scenario. I've lived my life and that is fine but would do what I could to help the rebuilders survive.

Mexico suffered a partial societal collapse in September of 2008 and has been recovering slowly ever since. When grenades were thrown into a crowd of innocent people trying to celebrate Independence Day and all over the country businessmen or their family members started being kidnapped or extorted -- things got pretty hairy. It is better now than it was but it is not back to normal by any sense of the imagination. But it is a lot better now in most of the country. There are still serious problem-spots.

However, life goes on. Where could you run if you're not going to leave? Most people in Mexico entered into the situation unarmed because legal gun-ownership is a tough hurdle to leap over down here (although it certainly is possible). Running or "bugging out" with any type of an assault weapon would probably have gotten the person running or "bugging out" shot at that time -- and maybe still today. There were, and often still are, roadblocks all over the highways, and the Police and Military are not 100% reliable. If they catch you with weapons you don't have all the paperwork for, well, they might shoot you. If they don't you still have a real problem. So right off, in any type of collapse, the normal "defenders of the peace" may or may not respond amicably to you if you are armed or at least visibly so.

So, life goes on, but the day-to-day survival becomes tricky. Shotguns and rifles are not much use because you can't go to work, walk to the bank, and handle normal transactions with them because the "Civil Authorites" will take them away from you or shoot you on sight. At the same time, if you choose to go unarmed as they want you to, you put yourself at risk because all the bad guys do not respect this ruling and often have paid off the "Civil Authorities" so they can run rampant.

You need to have a good, easily concealable piece of equipment for each member of the family. "Partial Collapse" is probably something more likely to happen than total collapse. Total collapse, in fact, probably requires more luck to survive than skill or proper prior planning. But partial collapse puts you, and your loved ones, on the street everyday as you try to go through the motions knowing that some of the dirt is all around you and the trick is to bring everyone back home at night.

It's Old-West rules. Think "Unforgiven" when English Bob wanted to go out on the town with "just a Peacemaker" and Gene Hackman caught him. And very few people get to be Gene Hackman in a partial collapse. Most of us are English Bob. Or the prostitutes. Pick your card game, but as did Indiana Jones, you must choose wisely. In my unqualified opinion, as I wade through another day here in the sunshine with trouble all about.

Well let's see; Across the street I have a top level USPSA competitor, a well experienced big game hunter and a married LEO couple. Next door is a retired navy vet gunner from a destroyer and behind me a retired LA County Sheriff and his 'gunny' son. WE have decided to all just hunker down and watch out for each other. :-) ........... Big Cholla

Speaking only for myself and my little family: surviving a dystopian future isn't high on our list of want-to's.

Life here is fleeting to begin with, and a much better one awaits and is assured. One in which, I hope, I will see many of the rest of you, 'cause I think we'll still be able to enjoy each other's company. :)

So, no bug-out guns here. Home is where the heart is, and I'll defend it, but if the game is over before it even starts, then I'll be moving on. No regrets; there's a bigger plan at work that's in the hands of Someone I know and trust. :)

No "bugout" here. Sit tight and let it run it's course. Defend home and family if needed. It'll never happen, but if it does it wont last long. Cities will implode without food and water...3 days at best. Order will be restored shortly.

and you had to bug out -- what gun would you take if you could only take one?

And what ammo would you take?

This is a good question but a lot of other questions should have been answered and carried out before that faithful day.
A gun and ammo can only go so far. The components of bugging out have been discussed and debated considerably. Food, water, first aid, shelter, fire......all have to be considered.

But in all honestly, for those that prepare for this day, the decision(s) have already been made.

Great discussion!

The way I was raised, if I woke up one morning and society had collapsed my impulse once would have been to cast my eyes heavenward and cry, "Where did I screw up?" :D:D

Fortunately I outgrew that eventually. Now I would just tell my little dog, "Well, there's no place better we can go, so let's stay home and be inconspicuous."

Much easier than hauling two .38 Specials, a .22 rifle, and a 12 gauge double.
