Let's start at the end, because that's what people want to see. Here is my 15-22 pistol with a cut down AR15 pistol buffer tube and SIG arm brace:
'
When I picked it up (for a quite reasonable $400), it was a plain jane 15-22 pistol. I started looking it over and realized that the sling swivel cup should be removable. It is easily removed and leaves a 3/4" diameter cavity like this:

I contacted a friend and asked about making an adapter for it and he told me to come on over. I picked up some cold-rolled steel 1" round bar and he turned one end down to 3/4", chamfered the turned-down end, bored three holes and threaded two of them for 10-32 bolts.

I sharpened and cut a pin from 1/8" piano wire to prevent the buffer tube from rotating when installed. I drilled the threaded hole in my receiver so I could run a 10-32 button head screw through it and used the pointed end of the pin to mark where to drill a 1/8" hole. I drilled the 1/8" hole so that it didn't go all the way through and would hold the pin captive when the adapter was installed.

I cut the threaded portion of an AR15 pistol buffer tube off and drilled a hole for the 10-32 screw that would fasten it to the adapter and mounted it on the adapter.

I installed the whole assembly in the receiver and secured it with a 10-32x1" button head screw.

This screw sticks out , so I ground a notch in the back face of my bolt with my Dremel and a 3/16" carbide burr.

All that was left was to clean it and build it the way I wanted it. Now, it is the following configuration: S&W M&P 15-22 Pistol, SIG arm brace, Tacticool22.com charging handle, Plinker Tactical ambi latch, cut down 15-22 rifle hand guard, Bushnell TRS-25 red dot on UTG high riser, Mako PTK angled forward grip, Mission First Tactical G27 grip, KNS 15-22 Gen2 Mod2 Antirotation pins, fake Flaming Pig and Geissele SSA-E trigger.

Now I just need to make it out to the Rio Salado Sportsman's Club for some trigger time.

Yes, it is legal. No it is not a Short Barrel Rifle.

The ATF has delivered an opinion that the SIG Brace does NOT convert a pistol into a rifle because even though it CAN be shouldered, that is not the INTENT of the SIG Brace.

Since the SIG Brace does not make this a shoulder fired weapon, it is not considered a short barrel rifle, and does NOT require a tax stamp.

If it were an SBR, I would have gone through the Form 1 process and would be using Mission First Minimalist instead of the SIG arm brace. Speaking of form 1's, a friend just got his back to SBR his Kriss Vector in about 37 days. If only form 4's were that fast....

SWEET!!!! thats great ta hear:D

I may need ta do that to my 15-22p

Looks Nice.... not a fan of that bigger cheek butt stock... but looks great

nice Job

Stavman, I'm in San Tan Valley, where in AZ are you?

I'm missing the logic here. So S&W goes thru all the effort to redesign a rifle into a pistol, and then you turn around & re-engineer the pistol back to a rifle. Yes, I know the BATFE says it is not technically a rifle, but we all know what the intent is... making a SBR. With Form 1s so quick & easy nowadays, I personally would never go thru all this. Get a rifle for $300, get stamp & sent the barrel off to be cut down. Quick, easy & you can use any stock you want... not that ugly arm brace. ;)

I applaud your engineering prowess however. Very well done!

I'm with you redneck, except

some states don't like sbrs...

And you don't need permission to cross state lines with this.

And your name isn't on a federal gun registry.

There are some that would do this for any of those reasons, even if it looked ugly in the end. 😜

I sometimes forget not everyone lives in a free state like Mississippi. Speaking of Mississippi... Mississippi State #4 in the nation & Ole Miss #8. Hail State!! Hotty Toddy!

Good point but don't know if I would trust every officer in the country to know that that stock is really not a stock. It is one thing to be right... another to sit in jail trying to prove it or to have my trip interrupted while I explain this SBR is really not a SBR.

With all my guns & stamps I have, my name is on many registries. When the time comes I worry about my name being on a registry, then I will need to have my head sized for my tin foil cap.

Good discussion. I got it because I came upon one for a good price. I don't think I would SBR my 15-22 unless I had a 2nd rifle. This was a nice compromise. It meant not having to get a barrel cut or get a bolt lightened. I'm not a HUGE fan of the SB15, but it gets me there with minimal effort. I think that I'm going to switch triggers in my 15-22s, though. I have a CMC 3.5 pound in my rifle and a Geissele SSA-E in my pistol. I think that they would each be better with the other trigger.

Are you calling mine ugly in the end?

SBR'ing the pistol still isn't out of the question. It would look way better with a Minimalist stock like I have on my AR.
