photo of my new no dash 629

Chris.... Sorry about the partial hijack of your post but I believe some clarification may be needed not only for me but for others visiting here.

For Doc44.....

Hi Bill...

I guess I'm still very confused. I've had the impression the list I posted earlier on this thread was a reference relating to the serial number range, production date and actual numbers of 629 no-dash guns that were produced, at least to the last date shown.

I find myself embarrassed to say I've used that list several times during 629 transactions and now I'm hearing there are no existing production numbers. If no actual numbers exist for 629 production how and why did that list showing at least those specific numbers materialize? For me the existence of that Roy Jinks letter seems even more mysterious than the guns themselves.

Each date shows a number following that date that would indicate specific numbers of 629 guns were produced within that serial number range. I can understand them not being broken down by barrel length. Are those invalid numbers and should that letter be deemed the same?

I have the three P&R barrel lengths purchased NIB "in the day" in my collection that remain that way. I also have a 6 and a 4 inch no-dash P&R that I am currently in the process of trading. Should I consider the list as a reference invalid for future use?

I always appreciate your knowledge and expertise. Thanks for any enlightenment you can provide!

Terry

No worries here Terry.
I'm very interested in all things 629.

Very nice
Makes me wonder about the person who commissioned it. Guns like that are everywhere now. Back then, not so much. The guy must have been a true gun crank to have that built. I think it turned out great. I'd be dam proud to pack it too.
Thanks for showing it.

Chris

Mine is a lot rougher than you fellows guns I bought it new in 81 or 82 can't quite remember exactly and I used it in Alaska for bear protection when I went there hunting in 81, 82, 83. I've used it to shot some steel and uspsa a bit , but it's back in the safe now. My ser. # is 867115 it's a 4 inch pinned and I believe recessed. Here's a few pics.

Has it arrived yet???
Please be sure to put up a photo:D

FedEx tracking number says it will arrive on the 26th at my LGS. Not sure if the LGS will be open though. Not that it matters, I'll be on 12 hour day shifts anyways. The soonest that I can pick it up will be the 29th or 30th.

Here's a prelim pic from the seller to tide us over. :)

And please forgive the Hogues, it will get proper target stocks ASAP. :D

Roger,
I've looked everywhere and all I can come up with are speedloaders.
They are nice but won't be correct on your no dash, which looks very nice by the way. When you get a chance, can you post all but the last two of your serial number. It would be nice if someday we could get confirmation of production numbers for these guns. Thanks again for the photos, happy holidays.

Sure, it's N8539xx.

And no worries about the stocks. I really do appreciate you looking for me. :)

That is a very nice 4" you acquired, not easy to get these days.
I have a 629 4" No-Dash I will add to the list, N-8378XX.

New to the family...

Hey guys, apparently I unknowingly joined the 629 "no dash" (MOD-629) family yesterday when I purchased my neighbor's 44. It is the 8 3/8" barrel version in near perfect condition (ser# N873###). All I wanted to do was take it deer hunting...now I'm not so sure I should do that. :-)

The photos below show two Model 629s. The first is the only one made by S&W with a 5-inch barrel and dates to October 1981. It has serial number N875528. The second one has serial number N629100 and is an original prototype that was one of six assembled in November 1978 and taken to a show in Denver by Roy Jinks. The Model 629 was announced at a press conference there on December 1, 1978.

It is unknown how many P&R guns by barrel length were produced, but the 6-inch is the most common, followed by the other two barrel lengths. It would require a search of S&W's records to determine the actual number of each barrel length made in the P&R configuration. Maybe that will be done some day.

I suspect P&R guns went at least to serial number N890000, but that is only a guess on my part.

Click on each photo for a better look.

Here is my 629-1 serial N876664 NOT pinned or recessed. So I guess they DID NOT make it to N890000. Very interesting thread. Thanks for all the information, hope my post helps. Wish mine WAS P&R!!!!!

That is a beautiful revolver, very clean.
I don't know about you but I'd find something a lot newer to hunt with. Here is what I sat in the woods with this year.
Ahaa...no shots fired.:D

Again, you have a great looking no dash and thanks for posting the ser#

I think it helps, hears a photo of my transitional 4"
The numbers aren't that far apart, mine can't be much over a few months older than yours. Yet my frame was drilled for a barrel pin but did not get the recessed charge holes. Your frame was intended for a no dash, according to the "mod" stamp verse's the M. But they ran out of no dash parts. I'm not sure at what stage the frame is drilled for the pin. I'm thinking there can't be many more guns stamped like this. It would be very interesting to get shipping dates for these guns. They have to be right on the edge of the
M 629-1 guns.
Thank you for posting your revolver.
Chris

Chris...Is your 6291 stamped MOD-6291 or M. 6291? If it is stamped MOD-6291 the frame was made and stamped prior to 1982, but the revolver was completed later and the 1 was added at that time. I have only owned one 629-1 (N932000 range) and it was stamped M. 629-1 (not enough space in the yoke cut for MOD-629-1).

It would be interesting to obtain a shipping date for N872196.

The P&R Model 629s are finally becoming "collectibles" and with this interest, I am sure production numbers will eventually be known.

Bill

Posted here is a picture of my MOD629-4 Square Butt 44 Magnum. As you state above, since this is MOD629 stamped, do you think this is an early Square Butt N Frame (before 1982) that was used by S&W before the closed them out and went to Round Butt N Frames in 1988 or 1989??
Thank you for all the great 44 MAG info.

Here ya go, Chris and Tom...

I have another similar list that breaks the numbers down by barrel length. It indicates just how scarce the 4 and 8 3/8" no-dash 629s are but I'm going to have to dig deeper to find it.

Terry

I have a MOD-6291 that is pinned but not recessed.
Serial number is N837339. It is obvious looking at the stampings that it was originally destined to be a 629. The 1 is a bit bigger of a stamp than the 629 part. It is on the list.
