Shield 9 or 40?

M&P .357 sig

I am very satisfied with my M&P .357 sig. I understand police officers across the country are going to the .357 sig so I think I made the right selection.

Can anybody recommend a gunsmith in the Springfield MA area that can lower the ridiculous 10.5 lb trigger pull that's MA compliant? I bought a 9, with safety (wouldn't carry a gun without one) and love it but would definitely like a lighter trigger pull.

Hey y'all, seems as though I'll be staying in the MP line after all. I went to the local gun store and held a bunch and nothing compared to the Shield, with the extended grip magazine. I was scared to start shopping do to my large hand "issue" but when I held the Shield, it just felt right compared to all the others I felt. Plus, the grip seemed great as stock, although I hear a lot of good things about the Talon Grip which I may also buy. The only question now is.... The 9 or 40?

How did you choose and any advice?

Then 23 minuets later:

Sorry... I bought a 22 to have some fun with and can blast off hundred of rounds without emptying the wallet too much

What happened? Nobody seemed to notice the second post. And it made it to the weekly ampersand! :D

Here in eastern Mass you can get an Apex trigger for $100 installed. It'll cut the trigger pull down to a smooth 6.5#. You will enjoy the difference.

Picked up the .40 today an put 100 rounds through it. I was surprised how good it felt for a "small" gun. It handles the recoil well and didn't take long to get comfortable. I may get the 9mm kit to have the option. Smiles all around.

9mm was my choice.

My full size handgun is a .40 but I went with the 9mm in the Shield as I felt that was the better choice for the smaller frame. Really a nice shooting gun.

There is a great gun smith in Palmer ma his name is K.L Hooten (413) 283-9975 36 Fern Hill Rd. Palmer, Ma he's right off of Main st. U will probably have to buy your own Apex kit which run around $80 to $100 and he will charge u like $30 to install or right around there. If he can't do it there's another place but it's further away and it's in Uxbridge,ma and it's called First Defense gun shop and they sell kit there and he will install too. I had this done and its like night and day going from 10 lb to 5.5 lbs.

9mm

I like my 9 and the cheapest improvement is to buy a few Pearce grip extenders. I've had great luck with mine. I had 2 Shields with one having done an Apex trigger and fiber sights.I traded it off for a new Model 36. I also tried the Crimson Trace laser on my other one which works fine but removed it to use my holsters made for a stock gun. I don't miss the laser but may install it when my eyes get older. It's a great gun when stock so don't be to quick making changes. It's way to easy spending money on unnecessary stuff but when a bargain on magazines comes along, buy several. You'll need them at the range.

I have a 9mm shield, like it very much. My hands are not small. It fits just right.

Weird! 23 minutes after your original post, you bought a .22 after asking opinions on the Shield 9mm and .40 cal. Have fun!
I thought he was answering the question posed to him about which other M&P he owned.

Who can log off, get in the car, go out and buy a gun... and be back home and on-line in 23 minutes? ;)

Takes me at least 25 minutes! :D

hahaha.... guess you never heard of a turbo... :D

LoL.. So, I guess you've never seen a turbo'd Big Block?

Mikey, it's all a personal pref.
I like both 9 & .40 (and .45 and 10mm really) for carry, but my wife has a MUCH easier time with 9 vs. .40, so that may be a consideration for you as well???

.40 IS quite a bit "snappier" for recoil and you also lose some magazine capacity (but mag-cap isn't a big deal by any self defensive standard anyway).

Also, if you are a "prepper" and the SHTF, 9mm should be a lot easier to find generally... But that's a WHOLE different ball of wax there...

Got the 9mm Shield for the wife. She attended Concealed Class Saturday . She loves the gun but has trouble loading the mag. Now I've purchased a quick loader and a holster. She's all set now so it's time to practice, practice , practice. She has small hands so the 9mm Shield is great. I have a S&W model 5946 which is a little heavy but very smooth & dependable. Wife is very happy with the 9. Take care & be careful out there!

I chose the 9mm based on several criteria

1. I wasn't going to be able to fire one before I purchased it. I didn't want to get a .40 and find out the recoil. really sucked.

2. I wanted something my wife could handle at need. That pretty much removed the .40 from consideration.

3. I decided I wanted to consolidate down to one or at most 2 calibers.

I had mine Shield 9mm now for a few months now and love it, I wanted the 9mm this time. I have others calibers from 9mm to the 10mm and can shoot all of them well. The Shield is one of my go to gun, I take it to church and just going around town, get the 9mm you want feel under gun.
