Great Cheap .22 Rifle, Sears Model 25 (Pic)

JS&W,

Great buy! I agree the Sears Model 25 is "Head and Shoulders" better quality wise than a Ruger 10/22, much less money to boot! I shudder to think what the price would be if this rifle was made today, probably $400 or more.

I am really liking mine, I think the example I got hadn't been broken in, the trigger has smoothed considerably since I got it a few months ago. I've probably put 750 rounds through it since I got it, no malfunctions and I'm getting pretty darn good with it. I would love to beat a snobby Anschutz shooter with it....

It's nice to find other people on here who also appreciate this dandy of a rifle..
quick question, I took my rifle apart for a good cleaning, and somehow broke the firing pin when taking it apart.. just bought a new one online, and realized that u need to pull the trigger when trying to get the bolt out of the back of the receiver? What about getting it back in, any tricks? cuz it doesn't seem to want to go back in.

Thx in advance.

You have to pull the trigger to re-install the bolt. Take a good look at the new firing pin you got, compare it with the old one, make sure you got the right firing pin.

Sears 22

Just purchased a Sears semi auto 22 at an estate sale for fifty bucks. Has never been shot, wood is perfect as is the metal parts. Guy must have bought it and never used it. I feel like I got a good deal. Will have to take it to the range and try it out.

This is an old thread, but I just noticed it. I have one of those old Sears/High Standards models 25 and it is an excellent little rifle and very accurate with my 4x scope mounted on it. Stock has been refinished and some wood removed/reduced and the barrel has been shorted a few inches making it a handy little gun to carry around in the woods all day long.

mod 25

Just got a hardly used model 25 , mfgd 11/63 , minor scratches on stock , great bluing . Will have to take it for a shoot at the range. Got in a package deal , a Remington 12 ga 1100 + the .22 Sears Model 25 , both for $150...... I'll take those deals all day long !

Just bought a Model 25. It will fire and eject, but will not feed. I cleaned it, but it only works if you hand load each round in the barrel. Going to spray it out with brake cleaner (not my usual method) and see if that helps. Any suggestions.

Rounds come through the magazine primer up or bullet down. I was using Winchester Super X and Wildcat.

I found this J.C. Higgins Model 44 LeverMatic .22 S/L/LR at a local gun shop. The stock varnish was peeling and it needed a good cleaning. Price $115 OTD. This is the Marlin model 57 LeverMatic in house brand. There is not a faster cycling .22 lever action. The short lever throw and 17 round LR tube make this rifle a blast. I stripped and refinished the stock. Rifle will put a full 17 round tube of .22LR into an inch at 50 yards.
If you see one-buy it.

I learned to shoot with my dad's .22. After he passed my brother pawned it. do any of you guys know where I can find one in good shape?

Had this one for several year before I could fire it.

Had this one for several year before I could fire it. It was missing the "top ramp" and would not feed at all. Finally got it working and it is fun to shoot. My buddy says they used to call them "click clacks".
Gotta love when you fire it, if you hold the trigger back the bolt holds until you release the trigger and then the bolt flies forward. That is just plain funny.

Pretty sure the striker / firing pin spring is worn out as I get 1 or 2 fails to fire per tube of ammo.

It's worth every penny to be able to fire shorts and even CCI birdshot. Never seen an auto cycle .22Lr birdshot.

Sears guns are funny, they are all made by somebody else. Depending on who made them they are either junk or treasures.

This thread gets resurrected periodically, as the Sears Model 25 is an interesting rifle. I sold this particular example about two years ago, having shot and enjoyed it, but like all things good they slip through your hands.

I came across this very rifle again toady at a flea market in Warsaw, Virginia. The guy had a very optimistic price of $225 on it, way more than the $90 I paid for it in 2009...

So there seems to be a bunch of people with experience with these. I have one that occasionally doesn't catch the bolt/hammer. It feeds a new round, but doesn't hold the bolt and closes on the round with the trigger held back. It also occasionally has a round FTE. I brushed the heck out of the chamber and put in new/used extractors from Numrich and haven't had the problem, but haven't shot it enough to know for sure. any help would be appreciated.

I went from single shot late 1800's to turn of the century pumps , boost actions. So many name brand companies made rifles for someone else. I have the savage pump 22, and it's western field clone same gun. We're talking affordable plinkers. Look in the corner rack for these full of dust treasures in your lgs

I have a Sears Model 25 and also a Remington 341-P both in decent condition and I have shot both about 6 months ago and then cleaned them. I have considered selling both.

Guys these awesome 22 rifles are in your local gun shop sitting in a rack in a corner gathering dust. Just weed through them to find a treasure.
I see lots of the military training models too. These can be fun shooters for the grandkids too. I collected the late 1800's to pre-war ww2 22 rifles in single shot, pumps & semi-auto for the 5 yo grandson. I'm planning the boys future so he can shoot.
