M&P 22 Compact

Yeah it is my first Smith product in 20 years. It is ok but screams cheap
Plastic sights
Plastic trigger
Plastic spring caputure recoil rod
Concealed hammer ( cheaper that way )
Roll pins , not solid pins
Mag well has high hollow rails not solid rails

Bet the profit margin is huge on this one.

Well it will be another 25 years before I buy another if ever

Other than a concealed hammer, the rest could be said about a Glock, a XDm, or just about any other polymer handgun on the market. The M&P 22 compact just screams quality to me compared to many 22 pistols on the market.

That said, I just want to throw this out there. Federal bulk 22 is the worst garbage on the market at the moment. I (thought I) lucked out and got nearly 3k rounds of the automatch and walmart bulk several months ago but they are the first rounds that have given my 22 compact problems with fte's, ftf's etc. That stuff won't cycle reliably in either of my Marlin rifles, nor in a friends 10/22 or my Sig (GSG) 1911-22. My M&P has fewer issues with it than the rest of the guns, but that stuff is still junk. Everything else I have tried works great. I love this 22 compact.

Huh. Wonder why I (nor it seems, anyone else) had to glue the sights, or boil the frame, or grind the sights?

I've had mine since the 3rd week of Sep, and have been banging away with it almost every weekend. Suppressed and unsuppresed. No failures of any kind. I'd like the trigger to be a bit crisper, but that's about it.

BTW, my Glock has a plastic trigger. And plastic sights. Seems to work for them.

Your post seems to have a lot of "You kids get off my lawn!!" feel to it.
I guess it does. Still doesn't change the facts

But then I'm not a fanboy

The Compact is a cheap built gun.

Smith is just plain sad today.

You get what you pay for. Spend another $200 and you get a spiffy Browning 1911-22 that has more metal in it, but doesn't shoot any more accurately than the M&P22c. Neither seems to have much in the way of malfunctions.

I have had mine for a couple months and I can't get over how good it shoots and everything it shoots. I've got old (1960's) standard velocity and all different kinds of HP stuff and it keeps eating it all up. I use it to shoot little 2 inch circle swinging targets at 25yds and it will do it all day as long as I do my part.
It's my general carry gun for cutting wood and back 40 yard work. Absolutely love it.

Palmetto State Armory has it on clearance at $250, I assume that price won't last much past today.

I do not understand why a recently introduced pistol that is not discontinued is on "clearance," a status usually reserved for discontinued items. Too many in inventory? Not moving fast enough? The methods of some of these places is sometimes a mystery. Perhaps since 22 LR ammo is about as hard to get as a "date with Cindy Crawford," the pistols are not moving.

Should have maybe will thanks for that info.
Mean it

No matter what my belief is about its quality.....it does shoot good....real good

About 700 rounds not one jam or FTE

IT DOES WORK GOOD.....

S&W M&P 22 Compact

Wholesale cost is about $280 or so. First time I took mine out the barrel leaded really badly in about 200 rounds. No function failures. I cleaned the barrel well and put about 50 more thru it without leading. I prefer this gun to the SR22. I have the full size M&P 22 and no problems with it after 3000+ rounds. I expect the same from the compact model.

The SR22 is having problems with the take down lever (more plastic) falling down and getting mangled.

900 rounds and the compact is still working after being tweaked.
Can't believe it is still functional the way it is built

No disrespect how old are you ?

I have had handguns since 1970, and they have constantly been on a march toward cheap, plastic, junk.

They work but really , pass down to your son guns ......not.

This gun works, but is a throw a way when it breaks junker.
Tell me how how I am wrong.

I had to glue the sights
Boil and bend the frame to fit slide well
Grind sights to shoot Point of Aim
Junk that works is still junk

Did not even come with a wrench to remove the barrel "nut"
Old Smiths came with a decent screw driver......remember or are you too young ?

I'm 70 now and can remember when guns did have all metal frames and most were well made. At that time, the S&W model 41 was $200 new. Now they are over $1000. Most plinkers would be out of the price range of the majority of today's shooters, if they were made like they "used to be".

The Ruger SR22 did have problems with the takedown lever breaking from the slide battering them, when they first came out. That has now been corrected with a stronger part, plus, if you don't trust theirs, there are aftermarket ones available that are supposed to be nearly indestructible.

Speaking of Made in USA M&P 22 Compact...

Screw a can onto one and you'll giggle like a schoolgirl...:D

This old thread keeps going. I just came from the backyard having shot 150 rounds and I just love this gun more every time I shoot it. I wish the trigger on my 9 pro was as good.

Unlike OO buck I just love this pistol, the way it fits in my hand, totally reliable functioning, acceptable accuracy and I fully intend to pass a pair to my grand kids along with a pile of steel pistols of .22 cal and larger. The Compact is just a lot of fun and after three thousand + rounds it just keeps humming. I guess I am more positive in my outlook on life as I am enjoying the time I have left and doing it with a smile😄

Sounds to me like you bemoan the days when guns were made out of forged steel blanks, machined to shape, then polished and blued. Sadly those days are over, my friend. Even most 1911s are made using a lot of cast or MIM steel, or even (gasp!) plastic components nowadays. Glock popularized the use of polymer frames and the industry hasn't looked back since. Cheap stampings, hollow roll pins, and molded plastic parts are the way they're made these days. If you think an M&P 22c looks and feels cheap, go pick up anything made by Walther/Umarex, or worse yet Chiappa. You'll find powdered zinc slides instead of aluminum, and the springs all look like they were robbed out of a Uni-ball pen. We're a long ways away from the good ol' days of the Colt Woodsman.

So far really happy with the M&P 22 compact purchase for wife and I for plinking and getting her comfortable with shooting. As a newbie not familiar with the issues previously mentioned. Seems reliable, well made. Considering a FS M&P in a larger caliber for myself maybe a birthday present for myself. As I get more into it maybe will find issues but so far couldn't be happier with the gun.

I bought one about a week ago and think it's a nice little gun. Much better than the Walther P22 I traded for it.

Anyone know where I can get a fiber optic replacement front sight? Hi Viz doesn't make one.
