It is a 38-44 outdoorsman.
One thing to potentially check/make sure of before buying is that it hasn't been reamed to accept 357 magnum.

If a 357 cartridge will fit all the way in, it has been reamed. It should stop with 1/10" left. If it has been reamed for 357 it greatly reduces the value.
Try dropping in a .357 cartridge. If that makes you or anyone else nervous, a fired .357 case can work but may be a little more of a snug fit since it's been expanded when it was fired. Or use a .357 snap cap, if available. Having been reamed to .357 wouldn't affect the gun's ability to shoot .38 Special, but detracts from its collector value.
Note that the stocks on the gun are not factory. They have a Sanderson's look to them (to me) but I am far from any kind of judge on that. Non-factory stocks is another detraction to collector value, although a bonus in my eyes since I consider most factory stocks uncomfortable.
Also, the number on the frame in the crane area doesn't mean anything, it was used only during manufacture. The actual serial number on this S&W is on the butt, underneath the stocks. The number stamped on the barrel should match, (and is probably also on the rear face of the cylinder) but cannot be relied on as the official serial number as barrels can be replaced.
This is a pretty good looking specimen - the $900 quoted above is not out of line.

Why can't I find these deals?
I am leaning towards Tom K's opinion that the stocks appear to be Sanderson. The quality of the wood and checkering have me thinking that. All in all a very nice revolver. At $350 it is a rocking good deal.

I certainly would not put a loaded cartridge in it. That could make the seller very very nervous! 
Most gun shops would give you a new, empty .357 case (often called a shell) or at worst, one that has been fired. Either one should fit ok if it has been reamed for .357.
However, that deal is sooooo good, it is almost like looking a gift horse in the mouth! Just buy the durn thing!
