Help with my ammo testing

Thank you for giving me the biggest belly laugh I have had in a long time. :D

My credibility on this forum was established long ago and is in no danger from this thread.

Why not just let him do his tests without giving him a hard time?

Or maybe you could save him the trouble and just tell him what the results will be for the rest of the ammo, too.
 
How long do you think this test will take ?
Onve I get all the ammos another few weeks to a few months depending on my free time.
How many rounds of each will you be using ?
Start with 5 at each yardage and then a 50rd dump so if the round makes it out to 100 yards it will take a minimum of 70 rounds.
How long did it take you to collect all those different types ?
I have been buying ammo for almost 8 months now but alot of the time its the same stuff available locally.
I am sure this is just for the fun of it , but if not then why ?
It is fun but the real reason is some ammos are more or less accurate out of each individual gun. Often times one or a few ammos will be much more accurate through individual rifles. Not all 15-22's will shoot the same ammo the same way.

I shoot so much paper with my hand guns that I've got to where I hate shooting paper with my 22 anything I mean any thing but paper.
Well I do it to hone my long range shooting skills. With a mil dot scope shooting paper is a blast out past 75 yards especialy with a little wind. Its a challenge to try to get good groupings. Once I have my senses about me I start moving the targets around to unknown distances and sue the mil dots in the scope for range estimation. Its mostly for fun but boy does it help your shoting skills.

I have done a little test of my own you know.
My test was to see if I could keep shooting 22 without resorting to breaking my commitment to myself not to buy any on line.
The results were I did keep my commitment ' so far ' but I was not able to just keep shooting , I have though been able to keep enough to take my Grandson shooting any time we get the time.
I am trying my best to collect subsonic just in case I get around to cleaning out my work shop that some how became my wife's storage shed.

Anyway looking forward to the results of your test , if you need anyone to test how any of those rounds perform down here in the humid south just let me know I would be glad to help with the shipping :)

When all you do is hop into a thread to try to find something to nit pick or quesiton it makes you look negative and argumentative. I see this alot around here as this thread was a perfect example of it. Its a shame some people have to act like teenagers in highschool, meaning they are trying to act like MR. Know it all for the acceptance of their piers. Its sad realy.

As for telling me what will shoot best he could probably help get me close but each rifle is slightly different not all rifles will shoot the same ammo the same way even if they are the exact same modle.

I'm curious regarding the amount of ammo you are using for each ammo test? did i read 70 rounds?

Because in my experience each time i have changed ammo in my rifle there has been a noticeable shift in the POI at only 25 yards, (shooting through a scope not irons), with both my 15-22 and my infinitely more accurate Anschutz. It generally takes between 30/40 rounds to get that particular brand of ammo to 'adjust' and when i changed again...similar issues.

Because i use both guns for comps, i found a round both rifles love, is in plenty full supply, and cycles well and is consistently accurate....probably because it is English made :p ....i notice it is not one of your ammo's to be tested.....Eley.

Good luck with your tests....i guess my question is: are you going to clean the barrel before each new ammo?

Okay Im going to try to anwser this as accurate as possible.

I understand that general fouling can make the gun more or possibly less accurate but generaly on the more accurate until it gets too fould. However I clean my gun alot. So everytime I shoot my gun its clean. If I am hunting or shooting for accuracy I dont want to have to foul the barrel to be accurate and possibly alert the little bunny there or possibly zombie squirrel. Whatever your target may be. So for my needs which are general target shooting/plinking/small game hunting I decided testing with a clean barrel for each type of ammo was best for me.

Now a clean gun is a relative meaning. With patches I have used 40 plus after only a few rounds and still was picking up some grey. This process took a LOOOOOONNNNGGGG time. Currently I run a bore snake with CLP through the barrel and I use CLP on q tips and gun wipes to clean the rest of the rifle. I then pat everything almost dry to where there is just a slight and I mean very sight film on everything but nothing looks "wet".

So for my testing I am passing the bore snake a few times in between each ammo. I do it until I can look down the bore and not see any gunk or build up in the rifling. This is about the same process I do at home which means if an ammo shoots well like this then it will shoot well the next time I show up with a clean gun ready to hunt/plink or shoot paper.

As for the rounds I put 50 in a black dog drum and see how it cycles through my gun with all my accessories on it. Normaly just a 3-9x40 scope and mag well grip or possibly GP-02 Grip Pod.

For accuracy I start at 30 yards and shoot 5 rounds. If I end up with a flyer due to something I did then I will place an extra round down range and take out the flyer. If the bullet passes the 30 yard grouping test then I move out to 50 then 75 and 100 yards all getting about 5 rounds each. If possible once I get to 100 yards I may keep testing out past that for bullet drop/accuracy rounds that fly better at farther distances with less drop etc but thats down the road. for now I just want a round thats accurate out to 100 yards. Or better said the most accurate out to 100 yards. If there are several close groupings more testing will be done to find the best one for me. I should also add that I test a bunch of ammos at 30 yards and a bunch at 50 and then 70 etc so the bore gets cleaned every 5 rounds or so. Its a real PITA.

So with all that said figure about 70 but I have atleast 100 of each on hand often times more to do as much "testing" as necessary.

And yes, I found M-22's. Thanks though.

I'm also interested in your findings. I'm new to the .22 platform and have only shot 2 brands. I picked up about 2k rounds of CCI SV when I bought my gun and after roughly 500 rounds did not have 1 issue. I picked up a couple boxes of the federal auto match and had two FTE's in the first 50 rounds. They are also notably loose in the casings when I loaded.

Again, can't wait to see what you get from this.
 
My own unscientific testing has yielded some "impressions" for me. My S&W pistol seems to prefer CCI. When I had a Henry rifle it liked the CCI.

I have a couple of Marlins and the most accurate ammo I have found cheapo Federal bulk ammo (525 round boxes) to be the best.

I will never buy any Remington 22 ammo again. Lots of FTF's, stovepipes, and other problems. However I like Remingtons 30-30 ammo.

All of which is just useless info I offer for those into trivia.
