Clint Eastwood's 44 Magnum

The Gun Clint used in most of the films was a Model 25 chambered in 45 Long Colt.. It also was good on close up due to the larger hole in the barrel. He said so himself.. I hung out with him in a concourse car show in Carmel.. He was attracted to my GT40 I was showing.. So there you have it..

Peace

There is a nice Hicoko45 model 29 video here:

You really need to do some reading.

As BruceM stated earlier in the thread-
There really should be a sticky for this.

John Milius and Doc44 have written about this. All guns used in filming were 6 1/2" M29's provided by Smith & Wesson. No Model 25's or 57's and no 8 3/8" barrels.

So much for Wikipedia and other "experts".

Bruce

Let me remove this link. God forbid someone should post a link about a 41 magnum in a 44 thread. Sorry 44 mag authorities. Lol

He actually used a 41 magnum. But was portrayed as a 44 magnum.

You sound very sure. Good, how about Actual proof? Every person actual involved in the movie said there were two 6.5" 29's. The only people pushing the .41 Mag theory are people at gun shops trying to get folks to buy a Model 57, "it's the gun they Really used in a Dirty Harry"....yea, right. I love the .41 Mag. First revolver I owned was a full house Magna Port Model 57 Predator package in the mid 80's. Nobody wished Dirty Harry's .44 was really a 57.......but I can't find anyone actually involved in the movie or the Hollywood weapons community (where I have worked and spent a lot of time with) have offered up anything other than the two 29's.

So.....think its a 57, prove it. Research it, find the serial numbers, the receipts from the prop house (which are very detailed with serial numbers and descriptions...cause it is a very regulated business with very well defined paper trails), the Armorer who prepped the guns, the property master who ordered or had the .41 Mag blanks built. Believe me, a .44 mag converted to .45 Colt would have been a far more believable story as blank operation is a big issue.

Good luck and looking forward to something other than speculation.

Just saw your link. Read this again, it is from your own link-keyword-misconception.

"The actual gun used on set by Clint Eastwood was in fact a Smith & Wesson Model 29. It is a common misconception that a Model 29 could not be located and a Model 57, chambered in .41 Magnum, was used instead. Clint Eastwood contacted Bob Sauer, representative for Smith and Wesson, to acquire the pistol. The Model 29 had been out of production for several years at the time, but a number of pistols were assembled from parts at the factory and provided to the crew. Eastwood took one to a firing range to familiarize himself with the Model 29."

This has been answered so many times on this site by some of the top 44 magnum experts and people still want to believe fairytales.

Excellent!!! Why won't this stupid urban legend just die??!! I guess the true authorities on this gun just don't matter to some-yeah John Milius made it up!!

I guess some folks still think the world is flat and we never went to the moon. Ouch, my head hurts.

Let's face it. Sledge Hammer was the better movie cop and a lot tougher than DH. DH could never have handled the crossing guard job like Sledge did.

You really should look up what John Milius had to say about this issue. :D

Wait a minute! Are you suggesting that I can't take the word of my next door neighbor whose cousin was friends with the brother in law of the assistant to the makeup supervisor on Dirty Harry, who distinctly overheard somebody say . . .

Oh forget it. ;)

I recall john milus saying in dvd commentary that Harry was supposed to carry a 4 inch barrel m29 but the movie prop people got a 6.5 and 8 inch barreled one so the latest nag barrel stuck. In magnum force commentary when Harry pulls it from his shoulder holster before Briggs comes in to the apartment he says "wow...only Clint Eastwood could wear that long barreled shoulder holster due to his height"

If I recall right ,the rumor of using a model 57 generated some 30 years ago from within the gun writing community. Also a push to save the .41 magnum round from extinction was hitting the top magazines as well.Anyone familiar with the model 29 series can quickly tell the difference between a 6 1/2 inch barrel and a 6 inch. The 6 1/2 inch barrel gives the gun a more lean profile from all angles. The loss of that 1/2 inch in barrel gives the gun a more robust looking frame like the 5 or 4 inch.Since the 57 was never offered in a 6 1/2 inch barrel ,its pretty easy to tell it was a 29.
