I was gone yesterday and for a good purpose.Well, a friend of mine who hadnt touched a gun since his Army days in Germany--way back about seventy one--never owned a gun or fired once since. Well,he called me up as I was about to go find a wifi spot to roost in--and asked me if I would go with him to buy a gun? Sure-why not? He wanted to know where the best deals were in town--so we went to Academy-where he asked me what he should get as a first-timegun owner and somehting not super spensive to have fun with. well,I showed him a Heritage Arms SAA Rough Rider--like mine--he liked it immediately--did the paperwork and was the owner in about ten minutes.
Sadly,all Academy had as far as two two calgoes--were expensive stuff.So,I made mention I had a stash and we went and got a brick frommy dwindling amount.
Next--went to an indoor gun range, and I started showing him how to operate the Rough Rider. He didnt know how to load--so no prob,showed what had to be done and explained that was why its a SAA handgun.
We set up three targets--one for both us to use just to see how his handgun worked--as well as to get familiar with it. He decided to try six shots to the targets head--wound up shooting off one of two clips holding the target in place.
After the first six six shot tries--he already had the hang of it--and was also doing some great groupings where he aimed.
He wanted meto try it out--but I told him my shakes were pretty bad yesterday and I felt unsafe to fire--but problem solved when he moved about three stalls away. I fired thirty six rounds and actually--didnt do as badly as I thought--even though my hands shook badly.I still--at about twenty five yards--still hit most of what I aimed at.
He is a natural--having not fired a gun in about fourty four years. Now hes going to be a regular shooter. The sad partis--is his wife hates gunsand doesnt know he bought one. He has to store his at my place.
Report on Rough Riders. Well,a gun counter guy said there were made in the Philippines. Normally that might grate my nerves but--in the case of his RR and the two I have--they operate perfecty. We breezed through slightly over half a brick of Thunderbolts--not a problem firing any of them.The only prob we had ofany kind--was when after I told him he should let the cylinder cool a bit before shooting more--he ignored me and fired six more times--one shell became stuck from the heat. He earned his lesson after having to extract the shell casing. Other than that--he's a born natural shooter.
