Do you have a photo? Concerned about the "altered SN." Based on your description and assuming original numbered grips with box, $950. Again not sure about SN issue - that to me is a deal breaker.

I think he is saying the serial number on the box tag has been messed with. I think the gun is not altered.

These are hard little guns to come by.
Twig.

What is a Model 43 about 90% with an original Bangor Punta blue box that looks like someone altered the serial number worth?

If you mean the box SN has been changed, I would guess a little lower than Jack, somewhere in the $700-750 range. An unmatched box is nice, but in my opinion doesn't add a lot of value to the package.

However, if you mean the SN on the gun, my understanding is that is worth up to 15 years' Federal prison time and a $10,000 fine, or both. Not recommended :(.

Here are some pix. You can see the serial number on the grips and you can see the ghost of the original and correct serial number on the box and then someone wrote over it.

Nice find

Looks like some one didn't have the correct box and altered another so he could ask a bit more. To me other than the little loss for the correct box I would be a happy new owner of a unique revolver. On a similar note I would rather have this scenario than some unscrupulous seller that lifts a pair of matching grips and then claims he doesn't know what happened to them.
Here is a good example I have still not corrected.

Appears the previous owner had no box, lucked into a correct box and changed the box serial number to match - not a big deal for a 40 year old gun. Just heat the sticker with a hair dryer and it will come off if it bothers you.

I'd call it better than 90% finish, probably closer to 95%. The anodizing on the frame and cylinder is fragile and chips easily, so the previous owner(s) took good care of it. Now it's your turn. Enjoy!
