Shingles Vacine

I was advised to do it and got it at Walgreens. My Dr said you have to buy 8 doses at a time and it does not last long, so he does not stock it. My arm was sore for a day or so. My insurance covered it.

I had the vaccine about two years ago. I had no reaction at all. No skin rash, etc.

It's not fully covered by Medicare (????), so I was out around $220.

Best $220 I've ever spent. A close friend of mine had a shingles outbreak. No way I would go through that. He did get his shot after the outbreak, and it's effective if the eruptions are completely gone. He probably had $10K worth of misery during the outbreak.

Three years ago I had shingles from my butt to places a man should never have shingles. I still have occasional pain from that episode. I have since taken the shot because they said if I got them again it could reduce the severity .

If I had known then what I know now I would give a thousand bucks for the shot, but that's just me.

I think most insurances cover it if you're above a certain age, usually 60, when you are considered high-risk. I decided to get it at 50 or so and pay the then $250 out of my own pocket after getting a (fortunately mild) shingles attack and deciding that I'd do anything to reduce the chance and severity of a recurrance. No side effects from the vaccine.

Given that a shingles attack can leave you with incurable neuralgic pain for the rest of your life, and the vaccine drastically reduces the chance of that even if you do get a case of shingles, it seemed well worth the money. I don't do pain. :(

I've had shingles. As soon as I'm old enough, I'll get the vaccine. I don't want that pain again.

I had a mercifully light case of shingles on my face and head in January of 2014. Fortunately got it diagnosed and treated very quickly. Last fall I got the vaccination, my own decision. I don't want that kind of pain again.

The only reaction I had was a small red bump at the injection site. It was a little tender but not bad, and lasted only a few days.

I got the shot a couple of years ago. No cost, no pain, and no reaction. Got a pneumonia shot at the same time. Different arm. Couldn't use the arm for a week.

I had the shot. I have heard too many horror stories not to. My neighbor had them and he was in misery for a month or more. I think after insurance I was out about $175. I did not even feel the shot and had no soreness. The hardest part was waiting at Walgreens until it was ready.

Made my arm a little sore for a day or two, a bit less than a tetanus shot. Meh... I see no compelling reason to skip it. Got flu and pneumonia vax the next week. Any others I should have? I'll roll up my sleeve.

I posted this before and I'll say it again. Whatever it costs, get the shot. Believe me, you do NOT want to get shingles. Talk about painful. I had to get an epidural steroid injection to relieve the pain. I went three nights with little to no sleep due to the pain. Since then, I get the occasional shooting pain but it just comes and goes quickly. I have gotten the injection since I had that outbreak.

Shingles

I had the shingles as a teenager! Looked like I'd been been attacked by an octopus with all these oval red spots on my chest.

My case was pretty mild, lasted about a week or so with a lot of itching and very little pain. I went to the doctor and I have to admit I can't remember if he did anything for it. Maybe some kind of ointment.

Mind you this was about 50 years ago. They told me I could get it again and since my mother had it as an elderly lady and suffered a good deal, I got the shot. No reaction, insurance covered it.

I'd get the shot, as I've heard it's much more painful and lasts longer when older folks get it.

What is the age?

It's FDA approved for ages 50 and up, but CDC recommended only for 60 and up, which is why most insurances don't pay and you're on your own if you are between 50 and 60.

The whole thing has to do with proven protective effectiveness and duration of the protection.

Doctor said to get it, insurance paid for it, arm was sore for a day. Got it three years ago.
