Hello Smith and Wesson Community. I'm Dash4+, but you can just call me Dash :) I'm brand spankin' new to the forums and I just wanted to share my excitement of buying my first S&W and Revolver ever. I'm going to pick the gun up tomorrow on Tuesday 9/15/15. The guns is a rather hard find and the story of how it ended up at the gun shop I got it from was kinda interesting too.

I'll start with the model. It's a 686 Plus (7 shot) .357 mag with a 6 inch barrel. I opened up the cylinder and looked at the frame and it says 686-4. From what I understand, a 686-4+ was only made from 1996 to 1997 which makes it a "Hard find" or so to speak. Anyways, I paid $690 after tax, background check and 3% with cc. It comes with the original case with paper work and label on the butt end of the blue case. I don't know if I over payed or not but when I saw it I had to have it XD

Apparently, the original owner of the gun was a gunsmith himself and he did a rather mean trigger job to it. The single action is very ticklish and the double action is very smooth. Better than stock action. From what the salesman at the shop said, the original owner used to shoot competition with it and it was his baby. And I could tell, it's in very good condition. Anyways, as age set in the 686 was too much for him to handle anymore and he went into a retirement home. And his son inherited his guns after he passed away and his son sold this beautiful 686 to the shop that I just recently bought it from.

The smith off to the very left is the EXACT one I bought. I'm picking it up tomorrow XD

And this gun explains my name on here to. I thought it was a good name to start off with my first post in celebration of my first revolver.

Welcome! You made a solid first choice for a revolver, not much a 6" .357 can't do.

Let me also be the first to ask - did you get the other three? :) Enjoy!

Thank you for the welcome Murphy, Ive been looking at getting a 686 for over a year now. But I was waiting for just the right one to come by and I finally found it :D And sadly I don't have the funds to purchase the other three, sadly :(

Congrats on the 686+! On the small chance you don't know, you can shoot .38 special in that gun also.

I'm aware, I appreciate the insight tho. Funny you mentioned that because I have some HMS .357 Bear Loads along with some regular .38's on the way from CheaperthanDirt. Going to hit the range this upcoming weekend.

#1) Welcome to the Forum. :)

#2) Congratulations on finding your first S&W revolver. They can be addictive. You will acquire more. :)

#3) A good gun buying philosophy is "buy the gun, not the story". :)

1: Thanks for the welcome :)

2: For sure! a 629 Classic will be my next revolver!

3: I didn't buy the story, I bought the gun. The receipt says "Smith and Wesson 686" not "interesting story". I did my homework on this particular variant of 686's. And like I said this is my first revolver, not my first gun. But I appreciate the advice :)

Edit: I also forgot to mention in my original post. I did manage to talk the guy down $50 from his original asking price. I should of started a bit lower but I was too excited about the 686, lol

I have the same problem my lgs has two s&w revolvers I want then a ruger 6" in 357 shows up. I don't think I can haggle $800 off? Plus the oilman is coming soon.

Not much better than a new Smith 686+ (love my dash-6 3 inch), except for another Smith.........

Ya did good.

Mine came to me with a Jerry Miculek trigger job (from the video, not Miculek himself ). It was actually too light. It was reliable with brand name new ammo but anything else was iffy. Single action trigger was extremely light but safe (could be dropped).

Welcome from the Land of Oz.
Decisions, decisions, decisions. Looks like you had 4 nice revolvers to choose from. That 686 is a nice one. Enjoy it.

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on the 686. Its the model that got me involved as well.

Congrats and welcome. That's a very nice first revolver!
If your so inclined , how about a range report on what you think of your first revolver.

Congrats very good choice and great caliber also. You are now in trouble you have caught the bug and there is no cure. Enjoy in good health.
