Is this a problem with my rear sight

Hi all I have had my 629 Competitor for awhile now but have not gotten around to shooting it yet. Today I took it out wiped her down and oiled her up.

I was checking out the sight picture dry firing a bit I noticed that the rear sight appears to be canted to the right and almost touching the frame a bit. I looked at my other Smiths and cant say any others look like this. Is this something that is a problem and can effect accuracy or within tolerances of the gun? Heres a couple of pics, Thanks I hope it doesnt matter.

The sight appears to be twisted.I see a gap on the left side(where the stainless sight base meets the frame,from the pivot pin to the blade) that isn't on the right side.
It would matter to me.

The back sight definitely looks canted. Depending on where the bend is, it could cause the windage to change a little as the elevation is adjusted. Whether it's as problem for you depends on what kind of a shooter you are. If you shoot at 100 yards and beyond a lot you might want to buy a new sight or take it to a smith and he might be able to straighten it. If 10 yards is a long shot for you, you could live with it.
 
After looking at the photos again, it appears the whole sight is canted, not bent or twisted. The mounting screw/screws might be loose or the holes may even have been drilled off center. Check the screws. If that's not it, have a smith look at it.
 
First thing is to take the whole rear sight off and make sure something isn't between the sight and the gun. May just be a piece of debris that got in there during installation.
 
It would bother me whether it affected sighting or not - but I'm OCD.

That is an LPA sight, made in Italy. They are good sights but yours is definitely askew. It looks poorly fitted to the top strap on the left side. The base of the sight has a rounded corner that is not cut rearward enough to clear the corner on the top strap. That's what it looks like in the pictures.

The sight is a unit - the only attachment to the frame are the two screws that go into the factory D&T'd holes, so you can remove it without affecting your sight settings.

The condition may also be caused by an obstruction in the sight channel of the top strap (burr) or a poor fit of the sight base to the top strap channel (I had a top strap channel that was too narrow for an Allchin base).

Take the sight off and examine it to see if it is something obvious and then make the decision to: A) Leave it as is. B) Fix it yourself; or C) Send it back to the mothership.

Best I can do from that angle and my crappy phone but it is canted though if you hold it up to the light the right corner is a hairs width from touching the frame.

I took the sight off it appears ok to me and no debris or burs that i can see however the sight sits flush on top of the gun without the screws when I hold it down with my finger. The sight starts canting right as the screws are tightened you can feel it move under your fingers. Guess I will call S&W tomorrow this is my 3rd PC gun I have had to send back but they come back fixed at least. Thanks guys appreciate the confirmation. :)

Over-torquing the screws causing the base to deform?

You should tell the PC to center the hammer while they have it. It appears to be dragging on the left side (see if there are marks on the hammer). It will probably also come back to you with IL reinstalled.

Great example of the poor fit and finish I anticipate from recent S&W products.

I wouldn't buy it.

Used , it talkers a big hit in value to me.
 
Thats a good catch I will mention that to them I didnt even notice that till you pointed that out. I have had to send a 629 pc back a 629 vcomp and now this 629 competitor. Wonder if its a 629 problem or I just got bad luck. Anyways the other two came back fixed in a couple weeks so I am sure this will be no differentm. I emailed S&W and requested a RMA number thanks guys.
