In our County, outdoor sheds must conform to current Hurricane regulations same as a house, not just tied down but the frame construction is the same as a stick built house (rafter straps, nail size etc.)
Our house was built before Hurricane Andrew which prompted all the new changes in code, so it is not built to today's "standards" Insurance in our zip code is near impossible to obtain and what you get is extremely expensive and has super high deductibles!

I hear you ALL-- we bought this place 20 some years ago- I had a room put under the garage, just for me. first day I walked in I said I had all the room in the world--
now it is, how can I get neater.

I can relate to many of the posters on this thread, bigoldave and lostintheozone especially. Small house and a pack rat wife with used books and a knitting fixation. I keep threatening a six yd. dumpster in the driveway but haven't the heart or guts. Rubbermaid outdoor boxes and a Ted's Shed isn't enough so my brother and I split the cost of a storage unit. He really can use the room but I'm not thrilled with the plan. Out of sight, out of mind just delays the inevitable dumpster trip.
I'll credit my wife this, for every box she packed so far two boxes worth got tossed so there is hope.

I can't bring myself to get rid of stuff. I've got so much stuff that I've lost track of what I have. When one shed gets full I build another. I went into a shed that I hadn't been in for a few years and found an engine and prop from a Piper Cub. I bought the engine back in the 80's to use on a swamp boat that never got built. I forgot I had it.

I am thinking about a new movie staring Rosie O'Donnell and Tom Arnold, called "Lost in Stuff". It is a story about two rural Ohio hoarders that have all these barns and out buildings on their farm and all of them are full of stuff.

Oh no, I have all my slotted screws organized by type,size, and length. Of course when I filled up my one car garage, the rental storage unit, and a couple of yard sheds, I built this in the back yard.

To be fair, I have to confess those pictures were taken right after I finished the shop, I should probably post some more recent pictures. (I built the shop in 2009).

This thread drudges up lots of thoughts. Our two 30+ year old kids now own their own homes and getting their stuff back to them has been a multi-year effort. When I took this last administration job we intentionally moved into a smaller, 1,350 square foot, house with a basement. We came from a 1,200 foot no basement house. The rule is the more room you have the stuff you get.
Now I am nearing retirement and I am looking at a pile to stuff right next to my computer that is going to get sold in a garage sale. My wife is the best at not collecting, I am the worst. I have a huge card collection that is virtually worthless and takes up lots of storage room. I use to go to auctions and would pick some piece of junk and drag it home and clean it up, fix it and turn it into something - eventually. Too much of that stuff laying around now though.
A friend of mine who is about to turn 70 has way more than I do and we joke about what our wives are going to do with all of it. All of the small pieces that go to my reloading LNL and other equipment are a pain to keep track of and with the set.
I blame it on my childhood where I grew up with virtually nothing and anytime I did get something - one my younger brothers or sisters would destroy it. Never had a lot of money so this was how I made ends meet.
My wife and I recently tied into remodeling our basement and holy cow, the stuff is piled everywhere! I am about to go insane!

There seems to be a severe shortage.

My "room" is very small. I have contemplated building a closet off the room (second story) to gain extra space but the joists run the wrong way so would have to brace it from underneath. The other issue is not wanting to bring the BI into my home to inspect the work. Not really interested in sharing why I need more room for my gun stuff to a local bureaucrat who may be anti 2nd amendment.
Luckily it is on the back of the building so might be able to get away with the project sans permits as long as none of the neighbors drop a dime.

My DW comes from a culture that believes wasting anything is a sin, a real sin. She tears paper towels in half. She empties her lunch bag after work and will put three uneaten grapes back in the refrigerator. As a result whe have tons of "stuff" that we "might need" some day. She starts Goodwill bags with the best of intentions and then never quite gets around to taking them. I do it. Sometimes in fits of Stuff Anxiety I just throw them out. She never notices; there's too much other stuff.
She complains that I have too many cast iron skillets and pots and WAY too many old kitchen knives. I probably do.....

I can empathize. I have posted several comments about my recent move to a new house. I have 3 gun safes and I think I had something like 50 moving boxes filled with ammo, reloading stuff, various gun related items. It was a nightmare.
As I was getting ready to make the move I started opening storage boxes that had been closed and forgotten for decades. I found hundreds of magazines for various guns. I don't recall buying most of them. I found thousands of rounds of ammo squirreled away that I had forgotten I had. I found things I hadn't seen in 30 years. Why am I keeping these things? Why do I have so many guns that I haven't fired in 10 years or more? I could sell 90% of what I currently have and still have plenty of toys to play with for the rest of my life.
I actually have plenty of room in the new place but as I look around I find myself thinking why do I keep so many guns and all this other stuff? Maybe it's time to divest. I recently sold a nice 2" M&P and I seem to have survived the experience. Maybe it is time.

You don't have to much stuff, you just needed better shelving.
My last house with my ex was 4300 ft with a three car garage.We filled every inch of it [emoji33]
