I currently have a first year 52 and a 52-1 and really like the way they shoot. Also I am familiar shooting higher end 1911's. The question is are the 952 guns tuned and feel up to par with the older 52's. I know the PC N frame revolvers I have are nothing like the prewar ones I have. Considering a 952 no dash but most inspctions are non firing and don't know anyone who shoots them. Any opinions would be appreciated. I'm not going to shoot it competitively but just some modest range time.
Thanks E

Never owned a 52,but have owned a Les Baer 1911 and a 952.The 952 is a great gun,top shelf,every bit as good..
I realize that you can only buy what you encounter, but I think that the version that I had,the 952-1,is the one to have.

A dear friend of mine in Idaho has both and I can tell you that his 952 is STUNNING and the very best accuracy believe it or not was..........

CCI BLAZER 115 FMJ aluminum case!!!

We both had a hard time believing that one ourselves but we proved it many times over against his top level handloads and mine as well.

I guess I'm partial to the Model 52.

I've owned several and now have the one 52-2

I've handled and shot the 952. Nice gun. Just not for me at the time. Now, having said that, I'd sure look at a -0 like Mr. Watson. Pretty nice guns, all of those mentioned!

I also like Colt Officer's ;-)

My buddy has a pair of 952's... one of them likely to be mine when I put the cash together. Between the two of us we have three 52's and seven PC target (5 or 6") pistols. I have a pretty good hands-on experience in comparing the 52 to the 952.

The 952 tends to have a closer and perhaps slightly more "inspiring" slide to frame fit & feel. On the other hand, though it certainly varies from gun to gun, I give the overall edge in trigger feel slightly to the Model 52.

In a no holds barred accuracy showdown, the 52 has an edge in my opinion, certainly due to the nature of a full target soft swaged wadcutter. Just look at ALL the bearing surface of that bullet! Then again -- feeding a 952 and getting magazines and NEVER dealing with any odd feed, extract or eject failures gives the 952 a huge upper hand here.

The easy answer is "both are amazing!" and it is true. But I think there is another angle to consider:

If you own a 52 and have a lot of rounds down range with them... you'll spend (roughly) 2-3x or more right now to add a 952 and the law of diminishing returns will be clear & present. For the difference in cash, your socks will not likely be blown off your feet.

If you have & love a 952 (and/other PC target pistols), your first range experience with a Model 52 will have your jaw dropped to the ground. Assuming you can handle the 52's idiosyncrasies (ammo is not mainstream, magazines are 5-rd only, cost a fortune & sometimes need tuning) your eyes will pop out of your head when you realize you are looking at target PC pistol kind of quality at a half to a third or more of the price.

Shooting them is quite different simply due to what amounts to a full TWICE the chamber pressure and muzzle blast of the 9mm compared to the sedate .38 wadcutter.

But both are fantastic and inspiring.

StateDirector,
Rented a 952? Wow, you must frequent an "upscale" range...our rental ranges stop at Glock, KelTec and Ruger....

Nice!

Are a Sig P210-6 and a 952 equals?

Also having 41, 52, & 945's... I have have gotten an interest in a target 9mm.

Picked up the new 952 today and would agree totally with Sevens discriptions. Very pleased with it. I plan on taking the 52-1 and the 952-0 to the range tommorrow evening for a shooting comparison!

Not familiar with the sig but most love the 210

I have several 952s and one 52. I love shooting the 952s, several hundred rounds a week. The 52 is nice but I only have one mag so every 5 rounds I have to stop and reload. Really kind of takes the fun out of it. I can pump out rounds faster with a revolver. The prices on 52 mags are ridiculous so I doubt I'll ever buy any. I'll probably get bored with the 52 eventually and sell it. On the other hand I've got about a dozen 952 mags (affordable and available) and usually need a rest before I can run thru 12 mags. If S&W would make a couple thousand 52 mags and sell them for $30 (a more than fair price) they would sell like hot cakes and they would make a couple thousand more.

I have managed to gather EIGHT magazines for my Model 52's and I think it's a decent number to be at. I load them slowly and methodically... partially because the rimmed round demands it and partially because I know how expensive the magazines are.

And after loading them methodically, I shoot the pistol in a similar fashion. I have dozens of handguns that are great for throwing fast lead down range but the Model 52 just has an entirely different role for me.

Fun fact: I bought three magazines for a Model 52 a full six months-plus before I actually managed to buy my first Model 52. So on my first ever 52 range trip, I was already rolling with four mags.

I'd even pay $40. :)

Looking to hear how this shoot went! :)

The shoot went great! Sorry of the delayed response but i just saw the additional comments. Ill try and post some targets after the weekend.

The trigger on the 952 is nicer than I expected. It is better than the 52-1 but not the first year 52 no dash. All three guns feel great. Obviously the 52's are ridiculously slow and drop the cases on your right foot. These guns almost don't break the paper but are a blast to shoot and accurate as heck! You would think that buying one would itch the scratch but just makes it worse. lol
