Would you submit to being carded?

I got carded at a gas station when buying beer (I'm in my 60's) recently,
I asked the lady, "Seriously?" she replied that it was store policy.

I told her to keep the beer and went somewhere else. (I was afraid she would see my address and follow me home)

Something like this where the employee is obviously just fulfilling a stupid requirement of their job I would show my ID.

I think the last time I got carded I was buying an R rated movie (The Expendables) at Walmart. I pulled out my license, she didn't even bother to examine it but it fulfilled the requirements of her job

I think you missed the point there. ;)

If I won't show it to a police officer I'm all that much less likely (which is to say, not at all) to surrender it to someone with no authority to ask for it under any circumstances.

There *are* circumstances when it must be surrendered to a police officer, not true for a store clerk under any circumstance.

As long as you are ready to be trespassed off the property. An agent of the owner (an employee)has the authority to ask to see it and order you to leave if you refuse if the owner says he has. They are not asking you to surrender it, it is not a 2A event, it is an owners property rights event. The property is private and open to the public subject to rules set by the owner. As gun owners are not a legally protected group, you can be refused service and admittance because of the gun-unless you can find a statute the makes you part of a protected group as a gun owner. MN requires rental properties to admit gun owners to public areas.

+1 What he said.

In a similar situation, I stopped to buy gas at a local convenience store yesterday . . . I guess my gun made him nervous. I guess it is just going to take time for people to realize that not everyone who walks in with a gun is there to rob them.
True, I'm sure. And for some reason, it may take longer at gas station/convenience stores.

They have the right to ask me to leave, but they don't have the right to ask me if I'm carrying legally, whether it's carried openly or not.
Of course they do. They have a right to ask you almost anything, except maybe ******* *** *** ******* *********, if you are female. The question under discussion is what you feel is an appropriate response.

In Illinois concealed only so would guess a LEO would be the only one who would be asking as I don't go into any store that has the little No-Firearm sign ..

Carrying concealed means just that so no one would know whether I had a weapon or not .. wife is very good about giving me the once over before I/we leave the house ..

Again, the store's agent has no legal authority to demand I show them my CPL any more than they can send a clerk out to wander the parking lot demanding to see driver's licenses.

Second, no permit is required if carrying openly, so for some people they would have nothing at all to 'show' even if they wanted to.

I understand what you are saying with regards to trespass. I was once told I could not OC in a walmart in Lakewood so I left. I did get the "manager's" name and called the regional offices. Their regional manager referred it to their regional security manager who stated that their official policy was that walmart followed the local laws and imposed no additional restrictions. Since open carry is lawful, it was allowed. The manager received some retraining and all was/is well.

Now, with regards to concealed carry; if a store employee noticed my printing or inadvertent exposure and asked IF I had a CPL I would politely answer yes. If they asked or demanded to see it I would politely decline. They have no training in what one even looks like, which states' permits are recognized, etc., so it's a waste of time for everyone involved. I don't believe there is any value added to displaying it to them. It is literally none of their business.

People get too wrapped around the axle with the whole gun carry and trespass laws. Here in WA they are not at all related to one another; a store employee can ask you to leave for any reason under the sun and you have to leave or risk being trespassed from the property, at which point remaining on the property could get you arrested for trespass.

I'd show mine and would have no problem being asked. By them asking they could prevent some illegal carrying.

I think you do what the law requires you to do, and you are polite and respectful to LEO's . . .
That's the way my friend. Leo's ALL carry commission cards. And must show them on request to identify them as legit. I never took offense if asked. My retired I'D is my Federal law, CCW permit. When asked display. As an officer I looked at a card holder as background checked responsible citizen
Good to have those around.

If the law requires it, fine. If there is no legal obligation to show your license, then I would not unless demanded by LE. In my state, they can post whatever signs they like, they have no legal standing and I do not and would not ID myself to some clerk/manager as it is none of their business.

I'd just probably leave and perhaps boycott the business depending on exactly how it is handled.

I might be tempted to ask to see their proof of employment and authorization to ask me that ( just to be a curmudgeon ), and then leave.

The idea of someone asking to see my carry permit doesn't bother me nearly as much as being required to have a permit to legally carry here in Tennessee. Once that underlying problem is corrected then there won't be any use for threads like this. ;)

Here in Florida it's concealed carry. Most places I've been ask their customers not to carry. I know Starbucks doesn't want anyone to come in their stores carrying even with the person has a weapons permit. I wouldn't mind showing my permit to a manager or a undercover officer that is patrolling in a store or etc.

If he was carrying concealed how did the store employee know? Concealed means concealed, right?

If the store employee knows you're carrying then you're not concealing it well enough. In some places where open carry is not allowed having a firearm not concealed is a violation and that is something to think about. If it's not concealed well enough then one needs to go back to square one and rethink what you are carrying and how. Some people like to carry firearms that are pretty large and very hard to carry concealed. Maybe if this person was one of those, he might need to carry something smaller than Dirty Harry's 6.5" model 29 for example. How one dresses makes a difference also. I carry several different weapons on occasion depending on how I am dressed and the weight of the clothing for time of year. On the other hand some people don't realize that summer weight clothing tends to print a lot easier than heavy Levi's and jackets.

I just flash my badge, everyone nods, and all is well.

I do hope that's a joke.

Here in the great state of PA the only people that I would submit my LTC to would be to local LEO's, PSP and to the County Sheriff and his Deputies. That's all that would need to see it upon request! ;)
