My apologies that this is so LONG but the details seem important so I am not sure how to edit it down. If you have the time and interest to read, please do and if not I'm not offended either. It would probably be too long for me :).

Last night I drove to the business park our shop is at because I am trying to trap a feral cat that has some serious urgent medical issues going on. I got there around 9 PM and was pulled over on the side of the street and was preparing the food and trap in the back of my car. This red truck passed by very slowly and gave me the look over and paused just past my car where he watched what I was doing for a few seconds then decided to drive a little further (about 100 feet) and pulled over.

I figured he pulled over to text or make calls as people sometimes do. When I was done getting the trap out on the sidewalk I got in my car and made a u-turn and parked on the corner across the street from where I left the trap and was under a street light so I could see the trap. After a few minutes the guy in the truck made a u-turn and parked behind me about 100 feet away. I thought it was weird but still gave him the benefit of the doubt but kept my windows up and car locked like I do anyway.

After about 10-15 minutes he pulled away and drove by at a snail's pace and waved then he pulled over right in front of me for a few seconds, like he was going to stop and ask something but then drove away slowly. He pulled over a little further waited a while then pulled out again. I watched him drive down the street and turn on the next street so I thought he left.

I hung out in my same spot for 45 minutes. When the cat wasn't going in the trap, I thought I would drive around for a bit then come back, as that sometimes works in cat trapping. I drove around the block and into the lot at our building and hung out for about 15 minutes. Then I drove out onto the street and drove about 300 feet from the cat trap and parked behind a van so the cats wouldn't see me. I hung out there for about 15 minutes then decided to check on the trap.

I pulled right up to it in a "T" so my car was sticking out in the street. Of course, the cat I needed to trap was in the trap but it didn't set and she ran out. Suddenly that red truck came out of nowhere and drove up really fast and parked in the parking lot of this small business I was on the sidewalk of. He was about 20 feet away. It was like he waited for me to be out of the car and then drove up fast. This guy had no business being there. He doesn't work there. I know the people who own the business. I stayed away but I asked him what he was doing there and that it was private property and he was not supposed to be there. He said he wasn't doing anything then started his car and pulled up to me and asked what I was doing. I backed up and kept at least 10 feet between us. I said I was trapping feral cats and they didn't like people they don't know around. It freaks them out and disrupts my trapping. He said he would leave.

Then he drove down the street and again pulled over and couple times but eventually left again. I put more food in the trap and adjusted it then drove about 300 feet away to watch it again and called John and told him about the weirdo guy. Just then he pulled up across the street and rolled down his window and motioned me. I rolled down my window and asked "what". He said there were a lot of cats on the street and where did I get the traps. I told him I work with the SPCA and get the traps there. I told him there were about 30 cats on the street that they were all fixed except for the last two I am trying to get. He really didn't care about what i was saying, he was just trying to get me to talk. I told him I had to go as I was on the phone. He said okay then slowly drove down the street. Once he got to the end he started to drive in reverse back up the street then forward again. When he got to the end he started to flash his tail lights multiple times, over and over, (like he was mad?) then backed up again and went into the office complex parking lot on the corner.

I asked John to stay on the phone with me, while I packed up and drove home. I decided to go down to the next street over and go out that way so I wouldn't pass him. As soon as I passed my street, the weirdo was driving down it again clearly looking for me! I drove by real fast and got onto the next main street to go home. By this time it was 11 PM and the road was empty. Soon a car turned from where I had come from and sped excessively to catch up to me because I was driving fast but it stayed about 300 feet away so I couldn't make out the car. I decided to cut through a golf course neighborhood where I could try to lose him. This car made every turn i did. Then some more quick turns and then I eventually lost the car. That was crazy! I'm not 100% sure it was his truck but the fact that the same car made all the turns I did in an irregular pattern was strange.

When I got home, I called the nonemergency police number to tell them what had happened, that I felt like this guy was basically following me for a couple hours and that they should investigate because there are a lot of robberies at the cable company by us and maybe he was staking it out. I am an easy going person but all sorts of internal alarms were going off for me. I was hoping the police could send a patrol car to investigate the guy if he went back to the office park, but they haven't called me back yet. I guess our quiet town has other happenings. John is going to come trapping with me tomorrow!

Should I have reported it or not? If anything, he was trespassing on all the properties parking lots he went into but noting actually happened.

You were right to report it to the police, but you should have done it sooner so they could check the guy out. Were you able to get a license plate number?

If you're going to be visiting the business after hours, it would be wise to carry a gun. I would think you could get a CPL since John owns the business.

Trust your instincts about human nature just as you do regarding feline nature. I hope you were armed, at least while in your car seeing how the great republic of California chooses to keep its citizens unarmed.

I would have called the PD as soon as I determined he had no go reason to be there and simply let them know of the suspicuous activity in progress. Stay aware.

I was going to call the police when I was there but thought I better get out of there fast because the guy was getting more aggressive. I just had a big knife. I was going to try to take a pic of his license plate but it was too dark when he was in front of me. I'm good at memorizing plate numbers but I didn't get a clear view of it. We've talked about John getting a CC permit but maybe we both need to do it. It isn't easy here. For now, John will go with me until I get this one cat then I'm done with that.

He may have been "harmless" - and he may have not. Sure you should have reported it, with a plate number if possible. Without knowing what your area is like, it may be a stretch to say your volunteer activity sounds a bit dangerous but do be careful. I agree with the other guys who say if you know how to use a pistol it certainly would be prudent to have one along on such expeditions. If not, maybe some bear spray?

Take video of him, his truck, his license plate number. Don't roll the windows down, don't converse with him. Try not to be anywhere near people like this. Whatever problems that cat has, are not worth your life or health.

Do be safe - take a friend if you have to go....watch out for the weirdos.

My 2 cents,Any time you go there or any area to catch the cats I would let the PD know who you are and where you are. It may help them in case someone thinks you are trespassing and it will be easier for them as well! IMO if anything like that ever happens again I would call right away, You can not be to safe! It would be safe to have another person with youat night if possible ! A woman or man alone at night make a target for the creeps. I would also be armed if it were me ! Glad you are safe

From his behavior, you have to assume he was sizing you up for some unspeakable act. You should have left sooner.

I don't want to make you paranoid, but in the situation you describe, you must assume the worst. Very likely he will come hunting for you again, with better preparation and planning.

You are obviously a kind, decent person. You have to realize there are many people who are neither. Carefully weigh the risks of being out alone at night.

This first behavior would have triggered my flight response.

I applaud your concern for animals, but armed or not, a woman alone, in a commercial district, late at night, is my definition of high-risk behavior.

I agree with all the above. I'm surprised you could hear what he even said since it sounds like your instincts were screaming at you!
Follow your instincts, sooner next time.
There was nothing normal about what he did after you first saw him.
Pick up the trap when it was safe to do so and leave, as you're calling the cops to report suspicious behavior.
If you see something, say something doesn't only apply to a terrorist.
Consider the NEXT person he may come into contact with after you leave.
Try to make it a cop.
I'm glad it turned out OK for you this time.

Get a good dash cam, too, if you can afford it. Make it a two-way. And a damn bright flashlight. I assume you have good pepper spray, and that you were carrying. If so, I hope your weapon did not give you a false sense of security.

Very risky behavior on your part. When I realized late in your post that you weren't carrying, I was really shaking my head. God bless you for trying to help feral cats. Actually, the fact that you are able to post this is proof that He did bless you! Please be more cautious in the future. My Mom & Dad always told me(over & over!)you can't be too careful.

Don't take it the wrong way, but wouldn't it be funny if the creepy guy had also reported you for suspicious activity? Glad John is going with you. If you've got the license to do so, please go armed in case the creep really is up to no good.

You were lucky. In the future IMHO, you should get a description of the suspicious person and a license plate number. Then call 911 and get those on record.

AND if you are 'followed' again, don't drive to your home. Drive to a police station and go inside immediately.

And, your safety is more important to you and your family than feral cats or a trap. LEAVE! Right now...........Come back in an hour or so with armed help. .............

You obviously have no idea of just how many two legged predators there are out there..............
