If the AR is Banned what is the top defensive rifle on your list ?

First they'd have to stop production of all rifles thst fit their criteria. Far more than just AR's.

Then they'd have to stop production of all magazines over the 10 round limit.

But if they just expect American citizens to turn in or destroy legally purchased property without fair compensation, then they have lost their minds.

And they won't. They'll continue to huff and puff, but removing tens of millions of guns and hundreds of millions of magazines without paying people fair price for legally purchased property will create a revolt in this country that has never been seen before.

I would advance the theory that even paying full or double price wouldn't make a difference . . .

I disagree. I think most people would jump at a sweet price on guns and mags. Pay me 50 bucks for a 10
Magazine and you can have them all. My choice. If others want to toe the line and hide them in the closet, never to be seen again, then that is their God given choice.

I have no ARs or AKs or other semi autos.

But I have several lever rifles.

Don't expect society to collapse, though.

Candidly, I've never seen any hunter use one to take game, not saying it's not possible but I've been hunting for years in many states and never seen one, ever.

It depends how you define "game". The traditional SP1 / M16 style AR-15 was a superb rabbit gun, being light, fast handling and quite accurate (1.5 MOA) with iron sights. The AR-15 is great for predator hunting, particularly in the heavy barrel format, and I think a flat top AR-15 in .223 with a quality trigger and quality 20" bull barrel with good glass is one of the best varmint rifles ever made for shooting prairie dogs out to 350 yards or so.

The problem with an AR-15 in .223 for mid sized game like deer is mostly the caliber, and the same can be said about the Mini-14, which is much less accurate in it's older pencil barrel format. However, the Mini 30 is the same rifle in 7.62x39 and that's a fine deer cartridge - roughly comparable to the .30-30.

I hear the "no sporting purpose" claims all the time, but between predator hunting, varmint hunting, service rifle competition, light rifle competition and just general fun at the range, I'm hard pressed to find another rifle in the safe that has more "sporting purpose" than my AR-15s.

I'm still ticked at the NRA for selling the black rifle crowd down the river in 1994. In effect they eased political pressure against the assault weapon ban in exchange for promises for hunting habitat to please the hunters in their membership. The irony there is that while the number roof people who hunt has been in steady decline as the population becomes increasingly rural and hunting access becomes increasingly commercialized, the numbers of black rifles shooters has grown almost exponentially.

I used to shoot a couple days a week as the NRA headquarters range and the black rifle folks clearly outnumbered the folks shooting hunting rifles. I suspect the NRA has noticed that and will be a lot less likely to sell out what is I suspect is now the majority of their membership.

I don't think a ban will come to pass in part because no political party is going to spend the political capital required to pass legislation that has the same compromises as the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban (i.e. banning production of new ones, but not confiscating the existing rifles and magazines). Given the political suicide involved, they won't be able to get the votes to pass a more comprehensive ban that also involved confiscation.

The 1994 AWB cost the party that pushed it 8 seats in the senate and 54 seats in the house in the 1994 mid term elections. The long term cost was even worse, as it lost them control of the senate for the next six years and for seven of the following nine congresses. In addition it lost them control of the house for a solid 10 years and they've only had a slim house majority for 2 years in total since 1994 - that's 2 years out of the last 22 years.

I don't think they'll be doing much more than talking loud and then blaming the other party when no new AWB happens.

Do people really consider the AR a "defensive rifle"? I can think of many other choices I'd grab first before an AR in a defensive situation.

AR's are cute rifles. Problem is, I would be laughed off any outfitters property if I went on a hunt with one....

Like...what the **** is that, you crazy...

My Bartlien barreled 308 weighs 6 pounds scoped and it's elk capable to 600 yards with a 165 Berger VLD Hunting bullet.

I bought that 460 XVR (and I'm waiting for the brass to arrive) to load up some 300 grain hollow points that I will certainly use on North American game animals.

Start your count at 1. Killed a couple feral hogs with mine a month or so ago . . .

Based upon what we're hearing about semi-auto weapons ban "compliance" in places like Connecticut and New York I expect we'll see something along the lines of Prohibition in order of effectiveness. Prohibition was the 1st Federal law I'm aware of to turn us into a nation of Skeptics regarding the governments understanding of what's "good for you"!

If I were the guy trying to figure out how to initiate stricter gun control I would figure out a way to hinder the distribution and sale of ammunition. That would be the long run approach and it would take a while, but we've seen what the short term disruption to the availability of .22 LR ammo has had.

I'd consider that 'infringing'. I did read a couple a grabbers saying that getting rid of primers would do the job.

A golfer.....

A golfer has a bag of clubs, balls and all kinds of accessories. Why does he need more than one ball and one club? Fishermen have a variety of tackle for different fishing. Why not one rod and one lure? How about sports cars? Does anybody need more than 80 hp??? Cars should have governors on them to limit the speed they can go.

For around 50 years I've shot at targets and other objects and never harmed a soul or even damaged any property. Every day tens of thousands of people do the same thing and go home and put their guns away.

I still would never attempt a long shot with a 55 grain pill no matter how hard I pushed the velocity.

It depends on how you define "long", and it depends on the bullet.

Hornady's 55 gr FMJs are well made and have a BC of .243, which is pretty good by 55 gr .224 bullet standards. I've also gotten 1 MOA accuracy out of them in my varmint AR, so they make great predator bullets and even without expansion they kill prairie dogs just fine.

The 52 gr A-Max has a BC of .247 at it's a half MOA capable bullet.

The 53 gr V-max is even better with a BC of .290. In a 24" AR barrel it can achieve 3400 fps, which gives it a 5" point blank range of 384 yards when zeroed for 330 yards, with about 11" of wind drift at that range in a 10 mph full value crosswind.

3200 fps is readily achievable in a 20" AR with the 53 gr V-Max, and the velocity reduction only reduces the 5" point blank range by 6 yards to 378 yards, with only 3/4" more wind drift in a 10 mph full value cross wind at that range.

They compare very well with a .308 shooting a 168 gr bullet at 2700 fps, with the .224 bullets having similar trajectories and only about 3" more drift.

Now...once I get past 400 yards, I consider the range to be "long" for varmint purposes and I'll use either a .308, or an AR zeroed with a 75 gr bullet with a BC in the .435 neighborhood, which at the same 2700 fps as the .308 produces a trajectories and drift that are nearly identical.

If a ban were to occur, I'd really hate having to give up my varmint ARs.
