I have a Shield 9mm, and I really like it. Recently a buddy has offered a trade on a NIB M&P9c, and I'm really torn on to trade or not. I like the way the Shield shoots and carries, but the extra capacity of the 9c appeals to me.

What is your opinion, trade or not?

Do the newer 9c's have better triggers than the older ones?

I think the Shield trigger is nicer than the 9c. I prefer the Shield for conceal carry. If that's not a concern then the 9c is the better shooting gun IMO.

The 9c is a superb and versatile all-arounder. Does many things very nicely. Shoots like a dream and is often more accurate than expected.

The Shield is a superb concealment pistol. Small and slim but shoots nicer than many/most concealment weapons.

I think this is not a either/or situation. You should keep your Shield and buy a 9C.

I love my 9C, has Apex upgrades & now has the best trigger I've felt in any striker-fired gun.

I started out with a Shield but I was never really comfortable with the capacity. So when I found out that the 9C was essentially the same footprint as a Shield with 50% greater capacity I decided to go with the C.

A 9C is small enough to carry in your pocket while you're at home but with enough capacity to at least give you some ability to respond to a home invasion.

I also like the fact that in my case since I have a 9 full size I only have to buy the full size magazines and they will fit both guns.

Shield 9mm locking up in middle of mag

I just recently traded my Ruger for the shield. Took her to the range very excited and within the first 20 rounds the slide locked up numerous times in the middle of a magazine. At that point the slide with Damn near impossible to get back into firing position. Has anybody had this happen and what could cause to do this? It is brand new

What ammo???

I find that the Shield has a really short leade and I had to adjust my reloads shorter to make sure the round chambered all the way. If it got stuck in the lands by forcing open the slide I could actually pull the bullet out and leave powder in the chamber and a bullet in the barrel. After I suffered a while and made adjustment, the Shield is very reliable but still doesn't like 'small ball' bullets unless loaded under 1.06".

I was about ready to sell it but I persisted and I'm glad. I don't KNOW of any factory ammo that would cause a problem, but from what you describe, that could be it.

PS I did have S&W replace the barrel because the chamber was really tight and any little defect in the case would cause it to get stuck short of chambering.

Is the Shield brand new still may need to be broke in it could be several things ammo, limp wrist its hard to say, was you using the 7 or 8 round mag? did you reload and have any problems? was the gun clean? I'm just suggesting things. And for it hard getting it back into firing position I've only had mine do that once and that was when my wife shot it and sure it was limp wrist because out of 600 rounds or so I haven't had a problem what so ever. Maybe some others will chime in.

I had a 9c that sold recently just because I couldn't find a place for it, I tried to carry it but found it a bit uncomfortable and bulky, and already have a full size m&p, if you can think you can carry it fine go for it it is a nice pistol.

Stacey, IMO you should start another thread so your question does not get lost! ALso try the search box there may be a answer as well. I think I read a thread or 2 about your issue! Sorry but I am not much help

The real question is: Do you WANT or need a 9c? It's a great gun, but just having the opportunity to get one means nothing if it's not something you want or need. If you have wanted one then I think its a good trade. Why? Because the price of a NIB 9c is about $150 more than a NIB Shield. You can make the trade and still have a very nice carry gun, and then, when finances allow, buy another Shield and be $150 ahead while having two guns that you've wanted. :D

Last year a friend of mine offered to trade me his S&W Model 60-0 (Chiefs Special) straight up for my Shield 9mm. I had wanted a classic J-frame wheel gun so I jumped at the trade - KNOWING that I would replace the Shield when I had saved enough of my pocket change. Yesterday, the Shield was replaced (and my friend was with me when I made the purchase. He was looking for another wheel gun!:D)

The triggers on both guns are nice, but that should haveno bearing on the trade.

Or you could +1 the capacity with a MagGuts conversion kit. That would give you 10 rounds with the 8 round mag without increasing the length.

I see you are from Ohio, so you wear layers of clothes in the winter and a T shirt and shorts in the summer I would guess. I have a 40c for winter carry when I could hide a bazooka and a shield 9 for summer carry. You need both. As far as capacity you should carry an extra mag and hope you never need the gun or the capacity. The 9mm has plenty of punch to get through a T shirt and the 40 has enough to punch through the layers of winter clothing. Good luck on YOUR decision.

LOL. Any 9mm that won't penetrate a winter coat and clothing is not worth carrying in the summer either! LOL

$ for $ you'd be coming out ahead trading for the 9c. I just checked on the price difference between the two and the source I used the 9c was about $100 more than the Shield.

I have both the Shield 40 and the 40c and the only reason I quit carrying the 40c was because I was having back issues when driving for long hours. When S&W came out with the NTS Shield 40's I bought one to give it a try...and guess what...no more back pain! Apparently that little difference in width made a difference in my case!

Money aside, you can't go wrong with either pistol IMHO.

I've got both a Shield 9 and a 40c. Both are great guns and they shoot equally well. I've run SD type drills with them back to back and other than the slightly larger hole of the 40 you really can't tell any difference between the two targets.

For me the Shield gets carried a lot more than the compact. Sure, there isn't much difference in size at all until you put them in an IWB holster (N82 Tactical for both) and strap it on. At that point the compact becomes a much larger gun. I also have a full size in 40 that fits the same holster as the 40c and can't tell a difference between the two other than the FS is a little hardest to hide. The trade you've been offered is a good deal. Everyone is different so you might find the compact just as easy to carry than the Shield but you need to figure that out for yourself before making that trade.
