Colorado has a 7yr (?) waiver for new vehicles. After that it is every two years.I'm talking about everyday cars and not the classic or collectors that someone will inevitably chime in about.

I have a '06 F150.In 2014 the emissions place hooked up a plug to something under the dashboard and ran the vehicle on the dynamometer.I'm assuming that they hooked up to the vehicles OBD (Onboard diagnostics). My truck "fast passed" and I was on my way.

I went today to get the emissions done and was talking to the man whose vehicle was right in front of mine.As his vehicle pulled off the dynamometer I waited for my truck to get tested.Instead of getting tested my truck was pulled up to the exit door and in less than a minute I was on my way.The report I got didn't list any levels of CO2 or other toxins. It just said that it passed.

Would I be correct to assume that the OBD is capable of saying that my truck is emissions compliant without hooking up a hose to the exhaust system? The truck is 10yrs old with only 69k on it and the only thing done to it in that time has been oil changes and the air filters replaced.

Nope, no testing of any kind. There is no vehicle inspection at all in South Carolina.

Yeah we have that rip-off inspection in Ma. every year. Dealer will usually give ya a freebie for a new car the first year. Cost here is $35!! Another useless waste of money. Many states don't even have this rip-off

Only in the major metro areas. St. Louis and KC for sure, not certain about Springfield or Columbia. The bootheel has escaped the requirement thus far. Based on some ozone quadratic equation regarding how many seals have died in Moldova . . .

...residents of rural counties in Colorado aren't required to get emission tested...thank gawd...and one of the main reasons OBD exists is emissions...mine's been telling me to buy a new catalytic converter for several years now...I just salute it...and drive off...

Not only does Washington have emission testing (every other year), all new cars sold here must meet California emission standards. Over 25 years old are exempt, as are all vehicles model year 2009 and newer. Toyota Prius and Honda Insight are also exempt.

Testing is only done on vehicles registered in the most populous counties - King (Seattle), Pierce (Tacoma), Snohomish (Everett), Spokane (Spokane) and Clark (Vancouver). If you're anywhere else, no testing.

Diesels are a whole 'nother animal - I'd have to look up what the rules are for them.

The state doesn't run the actual testing - it's a private company. I assume some percentage does go to the government; more than just taxes. I don't KNOW that, but if there isn't the state is just throwing money away. And Lord knows the government of this state loves their taxes and fees.

Edit: STCM beat me to it - I'm too verbose for my own good sometimes. Didn't realize it had taken me ten minutes to put it down and proofread three times.

Started out once a year, went to every two years several years ago.

Initially was certain counties, but kept expanding every few years until probably statewide.

Model year 1975 and newer. Fixed , not rolling by age. However vehicles registered as Historic or Street Rods ( both currently 25yr, Historic "basically" origonal, SR "substantially modified") are exempted from emissions testing.

Yes in Az, for the gasser every 2 years, for my diesel its every year, 27 bucks circling the drain.......Great state for gun laws, but not so much for vehicles.......

None in Indiana, but the privilege is definitely abused by some here.

Ohio did for a few years, every 2 years, in the densely populated counties around Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland. People got fed up with the corruption and it was done away. You had to take the car to one of a limited number of places, sit in line, run the car on a treadmill etc. rather onerous. One interesting exemption was all wheel drive vehicles because they couldn't be run on the treadmill.

Yes in Wisconsin around Milwaukee. Most any service station, they just plug into the OBD-II port.
