I received an unexpected call Saturday morning from my GD informing me my M&P 9L PC that I had ordered on Wed. had arrived, and to stop by and pick it up. When I had purchased it, he had told me that if it didn't arrive by Friday to expect to get it next week after the Labor Day Holiday. It was a pleasant surprise.:D

I went and picked it up along with 150 rounds of Estate 115 grain ammo.

Got it home and cleaned/oiled before heading out to range.

Please keep in mind when you read my comments that they are coming from a novice. This is only my 2nd handgun purchase, with the first being a Walther PPS in December of last year.

On to the range. Speaking of ranges, this was my first visit to formal one. "All" of my previous experience shooting was in my brother's backyard. He lives in Western Carolina on the side of a mountain. Backyards there are ranges. So, I do have some experience shooting an array of guns.

I was met by some very welcoming individuals at the range and they showed me the lay of the land and the rules. I had signed a digital waiver online that hurried the process up.

Set in my stall, I loaded a couple magazines with my Uplula speed loader. Worked the targets out to 7 yards and made my first shots. Here's a picture of my first shots. These targets are small... at least for me they are: 12x18. (I had to take the pictures at home because they do not allow cell phones or cameras in the shooting area.

I hit 15 out of 17 shots. Not bad for me, especially seeing that it was the first time I had shot the gun.

Here's my last shots with less than a full magazine. Again, 7 yards.

First impressions from a novice. I loved the trigger. It was comfortable and very smooth. I could shoot a thousand rounds out of this and be ready to go for more. I wouldn't have said that about my PPS.

I had spent hours and hours researching this gun and one of the main complaints I heard was about the trigger. It was spongy, gritty. The travel was too far and no audible or tactile reset. It's funny because I saw some of these guns that had the audible reset and some that didn't. Unfortunately, mine doesn't. But it ended up not being an issue for me. After the initial pull and shot, the reset was so short and easy to find; and i'm sure will be even easier as I get used to the gun. I did do a 10 shot rapid fire. The gun stayed on line easily and sounded like a machine gun.:D However, I was politely admonished by the range master that there is to be no more that 1 shot within 2 seconds. Hey, I didn't know, but he was nice enough about it.

The ported barrel seemed like it made a difference compared to some of the other 9mm's that I have shot. It was easy to get back on target, as I mentioned, when I was doing a rapid fire or single shots. One of the issues that I was well aware of before buying the gun, is the porting would foul the front sight... and it did. To make matters worse, the lighting was terrible in my stall. One of the lights was out and they were positioned too far back to help much. It was so bad that I could barely pick up the front sight: it was just a black bar that I was reasonably able to position between the back sight. That shouldn't be a problem in the future, as I have a Vortex Venom on the way.

All in all, I am very happy with my purchase. I wasn't willing to spend anymore than I did, and with everything I looked at, this seemed to be the best value for the dollar.

If you have any questions or thoughts, please "fire" away.

I ordered the same gun Friday and it should be here Tuesday. That red dot is what I'm considering running too. :) I was going back and forth between it and the Glock 34 MOS and the M&P just seemed like a better deal.

Cool! I hope you like it as much as I do. Funny, I did look at the 34 MOS after I had already made up my mind on the S&W. As you stated, the m&p seemed a better value for the dollar. Love to hear what you have to say about the gun after you've had a chance to shoot it.

My Pro-Series 5" has a great trigger and good audible reset ( Lucky I guess ) my M&P 45 4.5" barreled is quite the opposite. I will be ordering the APEX RAM Assist for that one and probably one of their sear nods also.

It's seems like there is no rhyme or reason why some have a audible reset and some don't. I'm going to shoot off an email to S&W and see what they have say about it. As I said, it's not really an issue for me. I'd just like to know why.

Love my 5" M&P 9L PC also. Picked it up last winter. It's the best shooting hand gun I own. Just about every time I go to my local indoor range.Guys are always complementing me on my shooting...At 7 yards and 10 yards I can make the bulls eye disappear. It shoots that well. everyone that has shot it really likes it. The best was a friend that is a very well trained CPL instructor and retired LEO Range Master and competition shooter (Champion) many times over USA and Abroad. He was very impressed with it. Your going to love that gun. And yes the front sight does get dirty after about 3 mags full. I just keep towel handy and no big deal. I also have the trigger stop set just right on it too..made a big difference to me. you just have to monkey with it for a while to get it just where you are comfortable with it. Have fun !!

thanks, I already love the gun.:D I did wipe off the front sight, but it only helped marginally. It required some Hoppe's 9 to get the front sight clean. Like I said, I could barely see the front sight because of the lighting-- yeah, it was that bad. I am going to paint the front sight with some fluorescent green paint; additionally, I have a red dot coming in the mail. I'll be working on the trigger stop this week before I make it out to the range again. Be well!

Received the Vortex Venom this afternoon. Very easy to mount to the slide. I was a little worried after watching and reading what others had to say, but it was a breeze. I used plate #5 and type C screws that came with the gun. S&W manual shows this corresponding plate and screws work with the Insight MRDS; however, it does work with this red dot and the Burris.

I plan to make it out to the range Saturday to try and sight it in. It should be fun because I've never done anything like this before.:D But I have already moved it center and a little above the front sight.

Here's a couple of pictures with the Vortex Venom on my gun.

p.s. Also, I am able to co-witness with the slimmest of margins.

Gunsguna, your excellent posts helped me decide which M&P 9L to buy. Of course, you've got a very fine shooter there.

Excellent, It was one of the main reasons I started this thread; not to be a fanboy, but rather to give an honest evaluation of the gun from the perspective of a somewhat newbie. The plan is to continue to update with my observations as I use the gun, and add different features to my gun.

I made it to the range yesterday to sight-in my Vortex Venom. I went thru 120 rounds. That makes for a total of 270 rounds without a FTF. The gun has been flawless to date.

I started with doing groupings of 5 shots. It was shooting very low and to the left. I made adjustments for windage and elevation and proceeded with another 5 shots--markedly improved. I ended up making 4 adjustments and then proceeded to have fun shooting. The red dot still needs some adjusting, but I didn't feel like I was going to get it much closer without using a handgun rest of some sort... I had to free hand it.

I should state that I sighted in the red dot backwards to what was suggested. I started at 7 yards and worked out to 10 yards. I didn't even worry about sighting it in at 25 yards.

This thing is incredible. My confidence in shooting has gone off the chart. My ability to adjust to the red dot was almost instantaneous. I had no problems finding it; in fact, I found that my eyes picked up the red dot quicker than the iron sights.

With adjustments I made to how I held the gun, what I was thinking about as I shot, and the red dot, I feel like a new shooter.--well, I kinda am a new shooter now that I mention it.lol

I was feeling so good about how I was shooting that I put the target out to as far as it would go: 25 yards. I would have never consider that with the iron sights. Here's a picture of the target. These are my last shots of the day. I went home feeling pretty good about myself.lol

What's the build date on the case label ?
You should have the latest trigger parts that have
a very audible reset. Mine does, felt and heard.

The date is right below where it say's M&P9
In my case 051516 for May 15 2016

I shot 450 rounds through mine yesterday and was hitting steel out to 25 yards. Needless to say I'm quite impress. This is my first long slide pistol and I want to get a Glock 34 and PPQ Match now too.
My build date is 5/23/16 and my pistols reset can't be felt or heard:(. I ordered the Apex RAM kit and the delivery guy just dropped it off not too long ago. Installed it in less than 5min.:D. Reset is now felt and heard. It's not as good as my Glocks or PPQ M2 reset. However the reset travel is nice and short like the PPQ.

I'm surprised they're so different being built a week apart.

I had several Glocks, reset is as good as them on my M&P
