Thinking to buy a Mod 76 SMG -opinions?

I am thinking of looking into buying a Model 76 transferable if
I can find one I can afford. I have had full autos in past, even a belt-fed 1919 that was great fun. Sold them all when my daughter got into Harvard Law School, had to send her as she got in. Worked out to be good timing, well before ammo prices skyrocketed. Think I can afford to shoot a 9mm even on a Public Defender salary. Any experience or opinions out there?

Im not sure what to look out for on those. I would imagine given caliber and and age there are some rather high mileage examples out there. I would definitely want to see the item first hand. I would post this question over on subguns.com sturmgewehr.com. Those guys would know.

NFA prices are going up... The 76 is a fun gun and you will pay $7500 and up for a nice one. If I were looking to get into a SMG, I would also look at an Uzi. You can get 22 and 45 conversion kits that make it more versatile and a suppressor tops off the package. 10 grand and up for a nice one.

I think in 1985, I remember them for $450-$600, I lived in a county back then where the CLEO would never have signed off on a Class III except for fellow LEO's and cronies, at least I got to shoot a few of them!

I have never shot or handled one but by most accounts that I have read here say that they are a blast. My only concern, if I owned one, would be the cost of ammo or components if you reload.

Having a full auto would tend to make me want to fire off multiple magazines and god forbid you take some buddies along to try it out. I could see going through 1,000 rounds in a cocaine heartbeat.

I would hope someone who can afford the cost of a transferable machinegun would be able to afford the ammo. I think my primary concern would be obtaining replacement parts.

There are several suppliers around that have newly made replacement parts for the 76. They are a fairly simple design and were designed to be used under less than stellar conditions. The literature for them, for example, says they may be cleaned with any liquid. They are also just great fun!

Shoot one before you decide to buy. They have one of the heaviest triggers of an open bolt SMG. The extractors are the weak link of the system and OEM mags are difficult/expensive to find. 36 round Suomi mags can be modified to work.

There are a limited number of qualified people to work on them. S&W does not support them. Replacement parts are rare. Richard from BWE Firearms is starting to make parts for them. I do not recommend Scott Andrey Machine. His parts are top quality but delivery and his integrity are questionable.

The Model 76 replaced the Thompson that were carried on the NYPD Emergency Service Trucks.

I hated the trigger pull and the muzzle climb of the Model 76.

The Thompson was a fun gun to shoot.
