Man, those rascals are persistent.
Very clever too. After they learned that running up the pole really fast works I added on a wire to the roof and perch...but only on one side. Sure enough they learned quickly to sit on the far side. Yesterday I added another wire to the roof and perch on that far side.

Shortly after that a pileated woodpecker, about 20 inches tall, landed on the pole. I held my breath…. I really didn’t want to see it get killed but it flew away unharmed. Whew... :o

What's the deal with breaking foul on the poor squirrels. A noble
game animal. There are a lot of other critters running around
free that need shot, cut the bushy tails some slack. Down here
in the hills we hunt them. We have them in the yard all the time
in the bird feeders. We never shoot yard squirrels or any other
small game that wanders through.

For having such a small brain, there must be a lot of it dedicated to prevailing in their search for food, for they are incredibly resourceful at finding ways to defeat nearly every device contrived. Googling verifies this. Still, to those who love them and watching their antics, the fact remains that they are the bane to those who wish to feed birds, not to mention the problems they can cause should they ever find their way into your attic.

I don't mind them eating whatever falls on the ground, just don't want them emptying the feeder. They often take the seeds and nuts and bury them in the yard.

I would rather not shoot them, right now they are survival food on the hoof, staying fresh in case I need them. :D

I love squirrels.............

They taste good when thrown into a gumbo! :D

Squirrel Gravy

Fry squirrel meat in bacon fat until edges are nice and crispy, adding a bit of salt and pepper.

Add 2 1/2 tbsp flour to pan, stirring for about 5 min.

Remove from heat, whisk in 1 3/4 cups milk.

Add some coarse black pepper and salt to taste, return to heat, and cook until thickened.

Serve over fresh biscuits.

My friend and Me found six baby squirrels when we were in jr.high school and I raised them to full grown.
They were actually a lot of fun,They would crawl into My coat pockets and ride around with Me and when They got older and lived outside They would still come and climb on Me whenever I went out in the yard.
Sadly they dont live very long and I do miss their antics.
I would like to have some more but I know my wife would kill me because I have a bad habit of bringing baby animals home and raise them and then she falls in love with them and is kind of sad when they leave for good.

I go through 25lb of bird feed a week. Buy it cheap, bulk at Coop
Deer come up and butt the feeders, then eat off the ground. We
have turkey flail the hanging feeders, squirrels climbing over them. I feel they got more right to eat than starlings, sparrows
and pigeons. I have a couple Red Tails that patrol the area. At
night the rabbits clean up what's left on the ground. Blue Jays
will run off squirrels & chipmunks. It's better than a TV show.
Yard is safe zone for all wild animals. Feral animals get low oil
pressure if caught in safe zone.

LOL !! My brother, who lives in town, has a similar set-up. But I live in the country, and from a hidden corner of my deck, I keep my .22 pistol active on the squirrels ( and rabbits in the garden in the summer) :)

My sentiments exactly. I was laying on the couch last night with the dogs watching TV when I heard that awful munching sound coming from the attic above our heads. A squirrel was gnawing away on the roof framing or trying to enlarge the opening in the fascia that they are using to gain access to the attic.

One time I blasted one with one of those 20' wasp bomb streams. Unfortunately, I didn't check for a while thereafter as all was quiet. After a couple of weeks I detected that wonderful carrion smell in one of our hallways and decided that I had better go up in the attic and check. Sure enough, there was Mr. Squirrel laying feet up in the insulation bay dead as a door nail.

Unfortunately, he had been there so long that he had started to liquefy and clean up was problematic to say the least. A mask and rubber gloves were required as well as a new piece of insulation.

A box of baking soda and a whole lot of air freshener were required to return things to livable.

Next time I will remember to check more frequently after an attic safari. ;)
