What birds put a smile on your face in your locale

Any bird, except a Buzzard. They hang around a local fish market; roosting on a billboard advertising for a local gun Store. Strange.

...we have lots of different kinds up here...from Hummingbirds to Bald Eagles...the Hummingbirds are our favorites...we used almost ninety pounds of sugar feeding them last Summer...we also are visited by huge flocks of Finches in the Winter...several hundred at a time...they empty the feeders in minutes...

We have a neighbor that has three roosters, one sounds good and the other two sound like they need a shot of WD.

We have a lot of pileated woodpeckers that live across the street where the poplar trees don't last too long because it is wet and rocky. I am amazed at what they can do to a tree. I had a hole in one of my pine trees that was at least 4x6 and 8" deep. The pieces on the ground were huge. They sound prehistoric too. Love watching them.

We also have owls around that sit in the tall trees by the house. I love hearing them at night.

" That looks like a Spotted Towhee"

Not a bird person but looks t a Rufous-sided towhee, especially in Sacramento with the foothills and oaks around.

My faves are: Osprey (we have several nests we watch all summer); bald eagles (common in winter) and flickers. Saw a snowwy owl a couple of winters ago==that was a joy.

Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chickadee, and Painted Bunting are some of my favorites. Cardinals Too. We've also got a couple of Road Runners that hang out too.

Birds don't thrill me much but I do enjoy watching ravens. When we throw any scraps out the front door the birds arrive soon after. When the ravens get there all other birds give them space. They will circle the scrap a few times and hop around it. Finally they will grab a piece and then drop it and look at it again before they fly off. Often 2 ravens get is a fight over some scrap and while they are doing this, a magpie will swoop in and steal it. Quite the show.

Ringneck pheasants, but the coyotes have just about decimated them around me.

I agree, I have seen exactly 1 rooster in the last 3 years. We used to be able to limit out in an hour around here. The introduction of the coyotes by the state to break up the deer heards has decimated our pheasant population.

With the return of the raptors, Hawks, owls, Eagles, along with the fox, bobcat, coyote, and the elimination of fence rows and hay ground, and other habitat, the upland birds are virtually nonexistent.

Turkeys
Love to see them teach their young to hunker down and wait for Mamma's return. When she calls them, they all jump up and run to her.

You can see them in the summer marching through the orchard. They form a line and walk in unison scaring up bugs. If the bug hops to the right or left, the next turkey gets it. Excellent teamwork, that!

Kill Deer
Great to see them teaching their chicks to forage for worms and what not. They seem to raise two or three broods a summer. When one batch gets big enough, they all assemble on a phone wire and get flying instructions from Mom & Dad. They fly around then regroup on the wire, then fly again. At some point the youngsters get the message "We done raised you, go find your own territory!"

Loons
I have a weak spot for this primitive waterfowl. I have read they are the only bird with solid bones, that's why they sit so low in the water.

Their "loony" cry is something to hear on a lake at twilight.

Cranes
They are making a comeback in our state. I just saw a flock fly over the house last evening. Must have been 8 or so.
