Yay! New to me 29-3!

Hi all. New guy first post. After moving away from revolvers to semi-autos about 20 years ago, I'm coming back around. Just picked up this 29-3 today after looking for one for a while. A few questions hoping you can help with:

When was it manufactured?

And what's up with the gold? I assume a former owner did that. It's starting to flake off and I'd like to remove it if it's not factory applied.

The gold is not factory, it was a thing folks did.

There's less -3's than -2's, so hang on to it.

Very nice and clean 29-3.I use to have one just like that one.I would say that one is from at least very early 1987 due to the lack of flat roll mark on extractor shroud.Just a point of interest,Nick Nolte carried a dash 3 in the movie 48 hrs.

Welcome to the forum! You got ya a nice shooter! I have a dash 3 as well. Mine rolled out Dec '84. According to the SCSW yours should be an '86 gun but Lakeside may just have that narrowed down a little better. No ideas on how to remove the gold. Acetone and a toothpick???

Nice snag! I have a twin to yours and soon found out with full house 240gr loads that four incher is a handful. Use some acetone (fingernail paint remover) and a nylon brush to remove that gold fill kit stuff. Enjoy that one!

Thanks, guys. The shop I bought it from had its twin for sale, too - a 29-3, but with the longer barrel (6.5" ?). Wish I had the cash for both!

...I've had my 29-3 for about 25 years...first S&W I bought...someone before me must have reworked it...it has the sweetest DA trigger pull of any revolver I've ever handled...

If the acetone or nail remover don't work(I think they will),try WD40:spray some,let sit for 20 minutes and use an old tooth brush.
Used to have one like yours.While I'm not totally stupid,I can sometimes indulge into doing something stupid.That's just what I did when I sold it.

IIRC the 6.5" was eliminated by the dash 3 revision so more likely the other one is a 6".
Both of these are 29-3's,

Sold off the snub a few years back thinking it was too small for the range, too big to carry and non P&R 29's wouldn't become collectible ... OK I was wrong....LOL

The 4"ers are my favorite barrel length.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Acetone and s toothpick took off the gold filled lettering. Nice and easy. Now to get some range time in! I used to reload .44 mag (and Special) quite a bit years ago for my Super Redhawk so have all the components ready to reload early this week so I can hit the range by the weekend.

Nice gun! The AUU serial number dates it from 1986.
