The 10-8's ran for about 10 years; 1977-1987. AWFxxxx would be 1987 I'm guessing. 3 letter prefix began around 1982. Not sure what you mean about internals but you should be okay. Pinned barrel left in 1982 and the gas ring went from the yoke to the cylinder on the heavy barrel in 1977 when the 10-8 was designated.

I definitely wouldn't feel under gunned with a 10-8 I have owned a couple actually and they were both good shooters and very trouble free revolvers .

You are fairly new to the forum so, "Welcome". First off there may be some folks chiming in about the better deal they got on a better gun. Don't let that bother you, we all brag about how we under paid on whatever. Second you didn't buy a collectors item, you bought a shooter grade gun. Yes, it has some cosmetic issues not cured by the refinish but overall not a bad looking revolver. I own worse. As far as how you did in today's market, on a GB auction I would characterize it as "fair". Depending on your local FFL transfer fee's, when done you will probably be into the revolver for about $520.00. If you could have gotten out for only the $458.00 then it wouldn't have been a screaming deal but a little better than before the added costs. Shoot it and enjoy. The Model 10, 4", heavy barrel are a workhorse. Target, plinking, hunting, home protection, etc. you get the point. regards, hardcase60

No transfer fees but will still be at 490.00 all said and done. I'm not a bargain shopper, so I am good with the price. I just need a new house gun that is a bit lighter than my 19's for the wife.

The 10-8 has the pre-MIM internals. The weight savings with the heavy barrel is negligible at only 2 ounces less than a model 19 4 inch. It is however a good nightstand gun in 38 spl. with the heavy barrel making for very light recoil.

I don't think I have ever seen a nicer 10 Heavy Barrel. Nice example. Both of mine are retired service weapons.
The 10-8 is at home. Received it on Thursday and ran a box of 148 grain WC thru it. Shoots like a champ! 1" group off a bag @ 15yards and a little over 2" at 25. ( Might be more me and my old eyes at 25. )
Had papers from repair shop S&W in the box with an order number so I called. They were very helpful but stated the repairs were done over 10 years ago and they do not have a copy of the actual invoice. Did confirm was "serviced" and refinished.
Looks like it was never fired or very little after the refinish. I pulled it down and found a new mainspring, cyl lock and hand. Looks like the barrel was re-set as the head space is .062 and the barrel gap is .005. End shake is .002 and locks up like a new gun.
After about 8 hours of polishing and stoning, replaced the rebound with a Wolf 14 pound and left the main alone.
Feels really smooth in DA (7.2- 7.6 pounds) and SA is 2.7
Narrowed, rounded and polished the trigger and polished the hammer. Need a skinny trigger for the wife's little fingers.
Added some Houge Rubber grips and gave it a good polishing.
Paid $458.0 plus $24 shipping and 21.00 for the Grips. Best $503.00 I have spent in a long time. I am now a Model 10 fan.
The stamping on the gun are very crisp and the bluing job is very well done. Must be the old S&W bluing job. The new house gun is ready for duty.

FWIW, I think that some folks like certain eras of Smith revolvers, and don't like others. They'll use some criteria to determine which ones are good or bad. I've both old and new revolvers, and I think they're all great!

I think you got a fine one. That one looks too good to be called a "house gun". It may be a "manor house gun".
Adding Hogues will improve its shooting qualities, IMHO. I like Pachs as well.

Very nice model 10!! I am also partial to the older guns. Just a little more craftsmanship and love went into them. Yours is a beautiful work of art. Make sure the Mrs. Gets down to the range at least a couple times a year to keep her on target.
Very, Very nice M10. Put the wood back on that baby and add a grip adapter if you need more grip.
Thanks everyone. Sorry Jack, didn't know that commenting on the new stuff was verboten. Wife and I will be at the range Sat am for some practice. I love the feel of the gun with the Houges, but it just dosent't look as good, so.....................I grabbed a nice pair of grips from Classic Firearms and parts and screwed them on today.
A S&W revolver should be always dressed in it's church clothes. Nothing looks better than wood on blue steel to me.

Very nice. They are great guns. I think they are very hard to beat. So reliable. Nice looking. They fill the needs of so many places. Range toy, self defens/home defense, and very nice with good ole wood
