That look of disgust . . .

Happens quite often. Sometimes with older guys. Not long ago I heard a older guy say that 7.62x39 isn't powerful enough. He wouldn't elaborate more. I was curious if he meant not powerful enough against men, elephants, ogres, dinosaurs, Thor's hammer, paper targets....etc.. but all he would say is that he'd never own that caliber because it's not powerful enough!

Having owned about a dozen revolvers and about the same semi autos of various firing mechanisms .....and revolvers I find that I get enjoyment out of sending lead down range. I don't care if it's a plasma rifle or a musket. The feeling isn't in the gun, it's in the act

Yes, revolvers

Went to qualify for my ccw yesterday. I was the only person there with revolvers. Everyone else had plastic, except the kimber guy ( still an auto but at least metal ). Most people had one, maybe two guns. I brought 3 because that's what my county allows.
I had a CA Bulldog, a Sig P238, and a 36-1. We were in two groups but I shot with both because I had more guns. After everyone else was done I still needed to qualify on my 36. Everyone was watching...so I stuck 25 into the black( probably 8") at 7 yards, then fired the last 5 weak hand and the instructor called out the shots...all 5 in the X! Went home satisfied.
 
I typically only shoot revolvers at the public range I go to. The semi guns get shot at the police range.

I do have to qualify with my BUG and off duty gun (same gun, SW 640). One of the guys in my unit came in with his new SW MP40. Since he was qualifying as well, the range master (buddy of mine I shoot with often) said he was going to run the whole qualification with the semi auto times. I ended up shooting a 245/250, had plenty of time, and even had my empty gun reloads and speed reloads finished before the other guy with his semi auto.

I'm no old timer. I'm 32. But I appreciate a nice revolver, carry my 640 everywhere I go either as my primary or BUG at work, and I have found that if you can shoot a DA revolver well it really helps your ability to shoot one of those plastic guns even better
 
I occasionally shoot at an outdoor public range, was there one day with my some of my mix of 8 3/8' long toms. Some wise guy came by and ask what those "antiques' were. I pointed out a K22,a K38, a model 48 and a 57.

A couple of snide comments about how much faster his Tupperware and springs could shoot.
I had some wet phone books with me, and ask if he would like to shoot a couple with his water pistol against my 57 at 75 yards for 20$.

Sure he said, I ask him how many rounds his gun held, he said 15. I told him how about loading 12 and I would do the same, with the 57 and a speed loader .

I let him go first and he proceeded to blaze away, making much noise an dust, but no damage to the target.

I stepped up to the line, my second shot knocked the wet phone book back about 5', the next 4 smacked it again. Did the speed loader bit and proceeded to bust his phone book with the 1st round and again smacked his phone book around.

The look on his face was priceless as I picked up my 20$ and his....the two guys with him were getting a laugh of of the whole deal.

Then I ask them if they would like to shoot some "antiques" starting with the K22, after about an hour they made it to the Model 57 and they were shooting at my 100 yard gong target off a rest, with some success ...made believers out of all three.

Ran into one of them at the range a few months later and he had found a nice 8 3/8 " 686, and was doing OK at 50 and 75 yards....
 
Not at a range, but at a small lake in the mountains. Told this here before, but here goes. I'd just quit fishing for the day and heading back to my car, heard gunshots, investigated, found two young guys with deer rifles shooting at a floating 1 gallon milk jug on the far side of the lake, about 125 yards. Three shots, they didn't hit it, I asked if I might try. I had my 8-3/8" 29-2 with me. It was my metal silhouette gun, zeroed at 100 yards. I took aim, long story short, I was in "the zone". Saw the barrel rise, saw the flame come out, the jug jumped. I hit that thing five more times and drove it up on the opposite bank. Those two guys looked at me like I was Quigley with a pistol. I wasn't about to tell them I probably never could do that again, and said to their dumbfounded, How'd-he-do-that? faces as I walked away "Thanks - practice".
 
I'm surprised - never had a negative comment on my revolvers. Most everyone at the range has at least a couple. The few guys that don't have them usually end up asking if they can give one a try.

But then, I shoot at a small outdoor rural range with mostly older, retired folks. Its the younger guys who tend to gravitate towards the plastic.
 
I don't get too many comments about revolvers as I tend to go to the range during non peak hours, where I get the comments is when I shoot some of my old military rifles, most people are shocked that anyone can shoot farther than 25 yards with irons, let alone the 600 yard range, I've gotten my share of sideways looks when I shoot an SKS or an AK on the 3 or 600 yard range with irons

No. The looks of disgust are mostly directed at their own miserable groups.

I suppose that if someone was ever that dumb...well, I hope that they'd gain an ounce of appreciation, or at least manners, while enjoying the noise and smoke of my .44 Magnum for the next couple hours.

At 10-15' (maybe) while their girlfriends look on SO IMPRESSED, :rolleyes: some of the shots are on paper, IF they use those 3' X 5' targets. The last time I went & will probly ever go to the indoor range near me this type of couple was near me & said something to the effect of "he's been watching too much of the walking dead TV show", cuz all stainless revolvers must be the same. Their laser sight was going around the room like a disco mirror ball. If I say anything at all it might be to say "want to compare groups" or "care to give an antique a try"? Usually I just try and keep quiet & let the groups speak for themselves. I do enjoy the hot brass in the cleavage 2 step floor show however.

Same here. No one cares and occasionally you'll get a .....hay that's cool what is it....if you bring a 460 or something. Otherwise people bring guns and shoot. I have not seen anyone make fun and most people keep to themselves or have minor chit chat.

Gun stores can be a bit different. Some guys are stuck in the gangster era and some don't know anything else exist but what they see today

I call those guys "Frugal Shooters" as they don't waste one square inch of target if they can help it.

I prefer to waste as much of the outside as i can.....
 
Here in AZ I usually have the opposite happen....people come over to look at what I've got and are interested. Especially when there's a .44 mag on the table.

Last time I was at the range I had 3 revolvers with me. I was having fun shooting bullseye style, so I spent quite a bit of time facing the table to my left. There was a Dad and two sons, I'd guess around 12 and 15 years old. They had a small assortment of tupperware guns that they were sharing. Dad kept a close eye on the kids and both were safe, responsible, and enjoying themselves.

When I was finished and ready to pack up I walked over to their table with a K-22 and a box of CCI standard velocity. I asked Dad if the boys would be allowed to try it. He said yes, so I asked the boys if they'd like to try the 'old school' way. The younger one actually bounced up and down as he said yes.

Both did well with the K22 and remarked about how much more accurate it was than what they had been shooting, and neither one would stop smiling. When they finished the box of ammo I went back to my table and brought back a 14-3 for them to try.

The smiles got bigger.

After half a box of .38 target loads, I brought over the 1950 target .44 special and some light cowboy loads. The younger one looked at the size of the shells and said no, but the older one stepped right up. After the first shot he just kind of stood still for a moment and let out a quiet "Oh S&%t." He put every shot into the black.

When we were all done the kids said some very polite and enthusiastic thank yous. Dad offered me money for the ammo, which was refused of course. As I was leaving, the Dad shook my hand, said thank you again, and then said "You do realize that you just cost me a bunch of money, don't you?"

I just smiled and said "That's what I do. Next time I'll bring out the FAL." The kids started bouncing again and Dad just put his face in his hands and shook his head.

Another good day at the range.....
 
Slightly off subject. Was at a police range with my son (the cop) waiting for him to finish some bureaucratic thing inside the range house.

Standing nearby with my 8 3/th" barreled 500 Mag with my hand through the frame window. Officer walks up and I ask if he wants to shoot it? Slight grimmace and says no.

I've asked others if they wanted to try a round or two, never got takers. Don
 
For my shooting at indoor ranges I always bring some full house 357 mag and 44 mag with me. When I think the young'uns around me are getting that thought, I light off a cylinder or 2 of each. That always gets there attention!! They then look down at their piece of plastic like its just a toy. LOL ;):cool:
 
Just last week I had a customer (friend) come into our range and mock the 3" 686+ on my hip. I told him they allow me one bullet that I get to keep in my shirt pocket. I assigned him a lane and watched as he fired his first shot out of a off brand 1911. First shot fired and lo and behold, an FTE.
As he was staring at his gun with a puzzled look on his face I moved into the lane next to him and fired 7 rounds in rapid succession. Then, I just looked over toward him, reloaded, smiled, and asked if he needed any help clearing his malfunction.
