Your 3rd Gen collection is not complete until...

I sold all of my 3rd Gens, cept my 5906tsw before the election and bought ARs and AKs. I was certain who would win and do a gun ban. I figured I could replace the 3rds. Now I have a bunch of depreciated rifles. Ooops, my bad. ;) ugh.
Ouch! :o Interestingly, our anti-2A MA AG lady is keeping MSR prices very high by unilaterally banning the sale of new ones (post 7/20/16)... so the ones I own are still worth what I paid for them... and in some cases a whole lot more.

Good to hear you stuck with good investments at least TTSH. Found out much too late What I traded like the 39-2 and the Model 19 snubby are now going for big bucks! Cost new was $125 for the 39-2 in 74 and $180 for the Model 19 in 78. Talk about young and foolish! Man to think we took walnut and high polish blued steel for granted! Best hold onto my CS-9. We need a Time Machine TTSH!!!!
We do. :p I've made my mistakes too. I stupidly sold off my own Model 28 4" (I now own dear old departed Dad's 6") and I also sold off a NIB Model 65 for some reason that I can't remember now. :o

Of course, the worst mistake of all is that I didn't buy every Colt Python out there when I had the chance 35+ years ago. :( But then again, a lot of folks now feel the same way. ;)

Agree--you don't typically see either of those at your local gun store.

They come up for sale on occasion online (forum or auction site), but go for a premium.
We have just one FFL here in MA that you can almost rely on to have a PC 2nd/3rd Gen pistol or two available for sale almost all the time. It's not your typical shop at all and I tend to stay away from the place for the sake of my dwindling sanity and financial well-being. :o Let's just say that his prices aren't exactly cheap. :o He might not even sell to me since he is very skittish and quirky about our MA laws, lists & regs. His business is mostly out-of-state sales.

That said, he would be the guy I'd go to first if I had the cash and were in the market for one of the rarer, more expensive, high-end PC pistols (i.e., not just a Shorty .40). Outside of that... yes, it would be turning to the various on-line sources and whatever ransoms they are demanding. ;)

Man that 952 would sure be a treasure to own. I recall seeing a blued version on the cover of G&A or Shooting Times when they first came out and the controversy of chambering it in 9MM. Am sure going for a hefty sum now. New in box condition will set ya back I bet.

NIB or otherwise mint/unfired 952? The market is fluid but my best real-wirld estimation is that you are looking at $2,800+ for such a package if it includes every original bit, sometimes including the white corrugated outer carton (which is where the sought-after S&W end label was applied.)

Solid 952 in perfect functioning condition but with obvious exterior wear, missing it's original aluminum PC case, no original documents or similar items? That typically starts around $1,800 and climbs with condition, who is offering it and market fluctuations.

That's for the 5-inch pistols. The 6-inch long slide re-writes the story.

Thanks. Just saw one in stainless going for close to your first estimate. Been fired though. Sure would have been a decent investment.

Had a chance to own a 952 and passed years ago (still regret not buying it).

My favorite 3rd gens are the 6906,

and 3913LS.

As for one favorite 3rd Gen its the PC9 or as some call it the Shorty 9,
Fit and finish is outstanding and the Briley barrel bushing just plain neat.

I do have a couple of Pre-Ban Colt ARs. I have been told that some states - Connecticut? - grandfathered the preban rifles and that I can GB them to those states for high prices.

So much for the "United" in the USA.

I'm assuming you mean pre-Federal AWB (i.e., pre-1994) and not pre-7/20/2006 (our latest AG-imposed ban).

Those are still "good-to-go" in Massachusetts, although it may take some effort to find an FFL willing to ship it here and a MA FFL willing to accept it. :o

I believe they are also "good-to-go" in CT, but I can't speak to the logistics of getting it in there legally.

A 1046 would plug an empty slot in my safe. But that will probably remain empty for a long time based on the cost and numbers out there (if any) for sale.
Yes, that would likely be exceptionally hard (and costly). :)

Either would be a tremendous PC score. :) Any version of the 952 would be amazing. But more realistically, I will probably end up with one of the more common (i.e., higher production numbers) PC pistols. I could really go for that two-tone Shorty 9, but they are so rare around here that I have never even seen one in person, for sale or otherwise. :o

My late dad never collected; he accumulated. I suppose I inherited that mindset. A Ladysmith with the gray grips would be nice. So would a 457. Why I want one of those, I have no idea since I haven't shot a .45 auto-loader in a decade. Do I need a Michael Kors purse to own several?

Here is a 457 for you. It's my friends gun. And $. Don't ask. ;)

I think the collection is based on desire. I wanted one of each alloy 9mm type single stack blue: 3904, 3914, cs9. (an example)
Double stack would be 5904, 6904. (another example)
Steel would be 5906, 6906, 3906. Etc.
I personally wanted one of each size 45. 4506, 4566, 4516, CS45.
And one of each overall type (alloy) of 9mm: 5904, 6906, 3904 (still missing) 3913, CS9. This gives me one of each size of TDA pistol.
I think it would be cool to do one each of stainless and blue of every model in one caliber. 4505, 4506, 4526, 4563, 4566, 4576, 4586, etc. That would be fun. Expensive, but this **** isn't a poor man's game.

I have a smattering of them, in the flavors I find useful, in the calibers I like to shoot. So...still need to find a 3904.

I like that. :) You have a plan... a purpose... a theme... and clear goals for your 3rd Gen Collecting! :D

That's what makes you a collector and not just an opportunistic accumulator (or so I've been told). :)

Haha! I agree. I keep forgetting things though. Like I keep forgetting that I don't like Glock 19s. I keep forgetting that my 4506-1 shoots better than my Colt Gold Cup, and that my 39-2 shoots better than my Browning HiPower.
I have fired a 3906 a few times, loved it, and I have embraced the idea that I won't find one for sale reasonably priced. I assume a 3904 will be something I can actually find, and buy and shoot.

Not a collection,no holes to fill.
In the 9mm realm,have CS9 6906 6946 5946,want to get a 3913(or variant).
In the 40S&W realm, have a 4053(bought a barrel and reamed that to 10mm) that can be set up as 40 or 10,want to get a 40 series double stacker and two CS40s'(one to keep as 40 and one to convert to 10).
In the 10mm realm, have a 1006 so nothing wanted there.

Well it's easy for me. I am still hunting for the ever elusive 3914NL. It would complete my blue/black model pre 39, 39s, 39x and 39xx collection of all the basic pistols offered by SW with the exception of the TSWs. So they would be next. Then any nickel versions next. But 1st I want the basix blued set of all the 39 series pistols.
I would also add it is not complete until you have traded away an entire collection/ series because you couldn't ever find that impossible last piece and then regretted it. A certain 1046 comes to mind. So instead of a nice set of 10mm pistols minus 1 I have zip.. nado/ goose egg. Very sad in hindsight. And finally outside the semi auto realm I really want a birth year 1957 pre model 29 5 screw with original case. I did bid on one last weekend on the big sight that was really cherry but it went for $4675. I just couldn't go that high... or close to that high.

Having owned or been issued practically all of the 3rd gen guns, including the PC models and excluding the DAO models, I'd say your collection is not complete without a 4506-1 and a CS9.

The largest and the smallest of the 3rd gens. And both possessing abilities beyond their size. Or price tag. Regards 18DAI
