Here we are again.
We are going to be facing a TOUGH fight- maybe our toughest yet.
Go ahead and discuss it, but remain sensible and considerate for the victims of these tragedies.

Stay OFF the politics and social commentary and other banned topics.
STAY focused on the gun issues, and ONLY the gun issues.

That means we won't be going into:
The budget/economic policies
Gay Rights
Obamacare
Foreign Policy
Immigration
Racial Issues
Etc......

GUN issues only.

Original post:

Just came in over the Assocuated Press wire service that President Trump has ordered DOJ to ban all gun modifications like bump stocks. That is all it reports at this time as the story is developing. I will update this when more details are available.

BATFE is part of the DOJ. It has the authority to make a determination that bump stocks turn a semi into an auto. During the Obama administration BATFE determined that bumb stocks were legal because they were technically rapid semi-auto devices. Beyond that I have no idea what will happen oor why.

Perhaps Trump knows exactly what he is doing......... The order bans anything that turns a gun into a full auto gun - none of that stuff does-but it sounds good. Pablum for the masses. Full auto means more than one shot per pull of trigger. I surmise that the executive order was VERY carefully worded. I really doubt that ATF is going to re-define full auto as pulling the trigger VERY fast. But I do agree with a lot of the posters-sometimes we are our worst enemy........

I don't see anything in the link you posted about the subject matter you typed . . .

They should be legal...

...just registered and taxed just like other automatic weapons. And forget suppressors. They don't count for anything any more than using them at the range to control noise pollution.

Personally, I don't care about bump stocks or cranking mechanisms or anything to make a rifle fire on auto. What I do care about is treading on my territory and the bump stock thing carrying over to other aspects of legitimate shooting sports

I never got into rifles much, and I only have one semi auto pistol. About the only thing I have used the pistol for is some target shooting (fun) and seeing how fast I can go through X amount of 9mm ammo (fun also). Misuse of anything will draw attention quickly, and sometimes it doesn't take a whole lot. I hope someday that it will be recognized that the person holding the weapon is the problem. The antis' make a living going after us. They can't make a living off of good news. Maybe if one of the teachers had a pistol in their pocket, things could have turned out a lot different. A good defense is better than wringing one's hands and crying about it and wondering how to stop such things from happening. Stupid is as stupid does.

"President Trump on Tuesday directed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to craft new regulations to ban firearm modifiers including the “bump stock”.

"A spokesman for the DOJ said it is acting "quickly" on the *President's Order*."

Here is a subtle point

The BATFE could easily determine that a semi-auto with a bump stock installed is a full automatic weapon. And if they did, who is going to say they are wrong.

But what about the bump stock when it is not installed.

Does anyone know the Federal law regarding parts that can be assembled into an automatic weapon?

BTW, in NJ we have an "Assault Firearm" ban, with Assault Firearm defined as in the now-expired Federal Assault Weapons Ban.. It applies to possession of an "Assault Firearm" and to possession of parts that can be assembled into an Assault Firearm. It is for this reason that although I have a semi-auto rifle, I do not own or possess anything that looks like a folding stock, bayonet lug, flash suppressor, grenade launcher or the dreaded "folding thing that goes up."

(P.S., NJ just banned bump stocks. I am not, I never was, and I never plan to be a bumpstocker)

The "order" was for the DOJ to complete a review process and propose a rule. I'm no fan of Trump, but he did not order bump stocks banned, at least not yet.

The memo, released by the White House on Tuesday, directs the DOJ to propose a rule “banning all devices that turn legal weapons into machineguns.”

I think he is just "stealing the anti's thunder". I think bump stocks are DOA and it is/was inevitable that Congress would ban them, sooner or later. He just beat them to the punch and will claim it was his idea in the first place.
While this may gain him some adherents from the fence-sitters, I wonder how many of his base will begin to have second thoughts about just how dedicated he is to the 2nd.

Deadin agree 100%
