I used to have 3 SD handguns, Small, medium, and large, that I constantly cycled in and out of the safe for different types of duty.

The small was to slip in a pocket around the house, medium was CC, and large was HD. When I found the CZ PCR, I was happy using it for all three roles. That being said, at 3AM the PCR is only used until I get a couple of steps to the safe and pull out the Rossi 92 in .357. Hubby gets the 12ga., he is better with it than I am. We stay put and call the PD for house clearing duty.

Well, if I don't have the option of a 12-gauge pump, I'll go with what I prefer...option number two...a 12-gauge side-by-side.

While it doesn't have the extra shots readily available, it's a lot easier to put into action when just getting awakened out of a good night's sleep. And while accuracy is still important, I don't have to worry about pinpoint accuracy as I would with a handgun. If an intruder breaks into my home at 3:00 a.m., and is hit with a good solid load of nine lead pellets to the chest, each measuring .33 inches in diameter, there's a pretty good chance he's going to stop right there.

Granted, I live in the country. It's just me and Ms. Judy in the house; all the kids are out of the nest, so no worries about double-aught buckshot over-penetrating into someone else's bedroom.

So, I guess my question is, when you've obviously got something that works, why on earth would you look for something else?:)

I have a Beretta M9 with a 17 round mag loaded with 147 Rangers on my side of the bed and my wife has a Model 60 loaded up with 38 Special Critical Defense on her side of the bed. Plus I have a Model A Uzi carbine hanging on the wall with 3-32 rounds mags loaded and handy if needed.

I've never agreed with the high status and love for a 12ga pump for home defense. Unwieldy, a hurdle for moving anywhere, requires both hands and outside of a bolt action goose gun, perhaps the most easily wrestled from your hands.

And on a handgun forum at that! :D

Handguns are at least 95% of my "gun life", in passion, pride of ownership and shooting. It's also where my skill lies, it's what I want for home defense.

My HD gun needn't be anything specific, it's whatever I carried that day. That means quite often it is a S&W 469 and on the weekends a Walther PPQm2.

I keep an S&W Governor in a Hornady Rapid Safe under my nightstand. The Gov is loaded with 410 double ought buck and 45Colt. The hallway to the MBR has one blue night light and one motion sensor night light. Just inside the closed MBR door is another motion sensor night light so there will be no mistaken identity at the critical moment.

There are also added security lighting, thoughtful landscaping, and locking devices on all exterior door so the prep will have to be motivated and cause considerable damage to gain entry.

Huh?

‘...base of operations?’

What constitutes ‘entry’ in your world? I hear lotsa noises...every night. Now if you hear the front door being knocked off the hinges that is altogether another matter. But, SERIOUSLY, where/when does that happen?

Be safe.

PS: I get outta bed and look around the house if I hear something seemingly originating from inside. NEVER with a gun in hand.

I keep two firearms by my side of the bed. A 1911 in 10mm with night sights and an 870. In addition to the firearms, a Surefire flash light and my cell phone. My wife has a Mod. 15 with Crimson Trace grips on her side along with her cell phone.

It depends on the "sound" of the entry related noises but, I'm going to grab the 1911 first because it is where the hand falls naturally. Then one of us will "make the call."

I'm not going looking for intruders but, from a vantage point, I am gong to take a position to cover two possible points of entry to the second floor where our bedroom is located.

From there it will be look, listen and be prepared to react. I am not "waiting" for the cavalry if the need to take action arises.

That is the "plan" but, I hope that it never has to be implemented.

lately, i seem -- sometimes to be back on my early am getacupof coffee. if it is cool enough i open the windows and slideing glass door. don't really care for the air cond. all the time. i'd share a cup w/ some of our members, but someone that might plan for a walk in, think they should maybe try another home. security light come on 1 morning 3:30 am, walked out the front door, got back inside as fast as i could, 3 baby skunks 3 ' in front of me. one should walk to the end of their walkway early am, check the sky, listen to the train whistles, AMTRACK at 4:30 am, which is miles from the house. smell the air and listen to the silence of the new day. the news is loaded w/ all the shootings every day all day, they seem to be doing a cleanup on their selves, my 2 cts. didn't mean to stray away from the nightstand survey, last thing on my mind when i lay down, which weapon is needed for a door banger at 3am.
