Just had a root canal done a few weeks ago, without a crown, and paid $1000. Is that typical ? I am not looking for a cheap job as I am very happy with my dentist,,, just wondering.

Did you pay $1000 cash out of your own pocket...or did your insurance get billed?

My family dentist sent me to an Endodontist group. They charged $1595 for a "molar root canal" but the contract amount with my insurance company is $1101. My plan covered 85% of the $1101. There was also a preliminary consult visit and a couple of follow-up visits (each at additional cost). This was done in West Palm Beach Florida, which may affect the cost. Now I have to go back to my dentist for a new crown at additional cost.

That was cash out of pocket,,, ouch ! No dental plan but our Medicare supplement through Humana is pretty dang good for $50 a month.

I have really good dental insurance, but frankly, even if I didn't, I wouldn't care what it cost. A thousand bucks? Fine, just make it stop hurting. Plus, my dentist always does a prescription for some really good pain meds. Plus an antibiotic to ward off any possible infection.

I’ve had two root canals and they cost about 2k each, with procedure and crown.

The last one I had done is probably failing, as I still have pain.

In my honest opinion, if it’s a rear tooth, I’d prefer extraction. It’s cheaper and honestly has less chance of future complication.

My thinking exactly. Last visit my dentist told me that I may eventually need a root canal. I told her I rather just pull the tooth. It has been a troublesome tooth since the 1990's when my dentist at the time had students doing internships...ie. letting them practice on patients teeth then pocketing the money himself. Well..they screwed up my tooth and it has been troublesome ever since. It is toward the rear and on the top...I think I could live without it.

Plus one on pulling the bad tooth instead of being coerced into expensive dental heroics. Virtually every root canal I've ever had has eventually needed to be extracted 10 to 15 years later. The clock is ticking on the ones left in my mouth now. No more and never again. Just pull it now please and save me the bother years down the road...but dentists don't seem to want to hear that anymore unless they can factor in doing a bridge or an implant after the extraction. I'm always left feeling that when my dentist needs to make another boat payment suddenly I need a bone graft and a sinus lift.

The main dentist just retired where I go. For the last 10 years he has been trying to get me to have a dental Implant for a molar I had pulled over 25 years ago! It was $35 after tax dollars out of my pocket, perhaps the best money I ever gave a dentist!

This dentist's warning was, that my upper molars would move or sag down, being unsupported. At 62 that process has finally started (or so they say!) but I cannot feel or see any indication. If the tooth triples it's movement in the next 25 years, I wont mind at all. With the stroke and Kidney problems I've had, I don't expect to see 87! (of course, when I was 17 I didn't expect to see 30 and at 54, I stroked out and didn't expect to see 62!) The truth is: We will see/time will tell!
