Root Canal!

Growing up in the northeast I played hockey my whole life. My first root canal was at age 8. Courtesy of a puck breaking my front tooth in half. The dentist did something wrong. I then went to a pediatric dentist for a second one. I remember it being very traumatic. I’ve since had 2 more root canals. One was from a hockey stick to mouth which once again cracked the tooth. Over the yrs they got easier. Within 2 days I was fine………. As a side note this past December I had the veneer done again on that tooth from age 8. I’m 54 now. Lol

Just had one on a bicuspid three weeks ago. I was sent to a specialist and they were very good. Procedure took 30 minutes and NO PAIN. They did charge a lot, but it was worth it.

Mine was a complete non-event. I'd heard all the horror stories. The actual procedure was nothing, I forget how long I was in the chair. Recovery was quick and as I recall not terribly uncomfortable.

Well, I'm still dealing with mine. Pain never went away, I had an abscess, the endodontist went back in and drilled some more, still no relief. I decided he couldn't fix it, so I went to another endodontist on 4/19. He said he thought he could fix it, but he had no appointments available till 5/11. So I'm still waiting for a final resolution. :(. Been dealing with this for almost two months now.

About ten years ago, I needed a root canal. I was filled with trepidation until the dentist explained that in olden days they didn't wait for the infection to go down. I was numbed up, no pain and my tooth felt normal from day one.

I've had 2 root canals, If you have seen anybody clean a cutting torch tip the little round files they use in a root canal look just what the dentist uses to work in the tooth. Jeff

Just had two done in the past month. Both were previously capped teeth. I've had several others over my lifetime. No pain or issues afterwards with any.
The two recent jobs were done after my dentist saw indications of infections in the bone surrounding the roots of both teeth. I had no pain at the time but whenever I'd get a cold or sinus infection I would get mild toothaches in the infected areas aafterwards for a week or two. When I had these two RCs done my dentist said it was not uncommon to get a flare-up of pain post proceedure but I had no issues. Everyone is different. BTY I'm a redhead and have a high pain tolerance, something that comes with being a ginger!

Only had one root canal, and that was back in 2000. Went to a local dentist and he took it out, putting in a temporary cotton plug. Got reinfected before it was time for the permanent fix, and had do go back to same dentist - I do remember a couple of days of pain, and the real painkillers helped. I know there are dentists who specialize in root canals, and maybe I should asked for a referral - but at the time, I was hurting.

Then, in December of 2021, had some pain which I thought was toothache. A lady friend said that part of mouth looked swollen, although I could not see it. I went to my dentist (not the same one who had done the root canal) and they extracted the tooth - said the root canal had gone bad. I expected more pain, but only had to take two of the eight tablets prescribed. There is a gap in my mouth where the tooth was, but it is not noticable when talking, etc., and so far I have not chosen to go the implant route, with the associated expense. At my age, I wonder if that would be wise.

Tomorrow I go in to remove a tooth that had a root canal 10 years ago.
The bad part is it is part of a 4 way bridge. It is the back tooth and they are going to save the 2 front teeth's crowns. While they are in there they are going to place the bone for an implant on the area that was missing a tooth. I am pretty disappointed that the back tooth went bad because I was told this bridge would last for the rest of my life.
To answer the question a normal root canal should only hurt for 3 days max in my experience.

Good luck! It's amazing how something as small as a tooth can cause so much trouble.

The second endodontist I'll be going to next week said if this procedure doesn't work, the tooth will have to be extracted. He said I have significant bone loss associated with this tooth that will require a bone graft. Fun, fun.

Thanks for all the replies. To complicate things, I already had a crown on the tooth in question, so the endodontist drilled right through it. I don't know how much this may have complicated the procedure. When I went back a week after the procedure, he said the nerves looked like they had been deteriorating for some time, and it would take time for things to settle down. At this point, I don't know what to do. It does feel marginally better today, so maybe he's right.

The only dental insurance I have is through my Medicare Advantage plan, and the root canal procedure already put me over the yearly maximum. So any other work (or a second opinion) comes straight out of pocket. Fun, fun fun......

I had the same thing done through a crown. Give it a day or two to see if it settles down. My tooth/jaw eased up after a bit and I have no problems that lasted after it settled down.

O have had several over the years, and do not consider them to be that big of a deal.
Everything felt normal the next day.

Been there/done that too.
Again, not that big of a deal ( for me ).
