The so called field style has been around a long time. Popular
with customers because they are generally inexpensive, but
they get the job done. Almost all the makers produced them at
one time or another. I have several by Lawrence, Hunter,
Eubanks/Idaho Leather, and Bucheimer, that I can think of
right off hand.
The one shown here is a Lawrence size 540 which was made
for J frames and the like. It is on a Lawrence cartridge belt
carrying my little Charter Undercover.

This is my Hunter number 1100K also carrying my Charter Undercover:)

Phil:

Here's my 1960 Model 28 no dash, wearing N frame PC magnas from a period correct model 58 (my favorite factory stocks for carry),....securely nestled in my Smith and Wesson version of the Field Holster....marked 21 34. Carried on a belt made up in your neck of the woods, at "Idaho Leather", IIRC.

A field holster is by no means always a belt holster. This one, the Bianchi HuSH, is my favorite for the field not least when hunting with a scoped pistol (image cheerfully cadged from another forum, by yours truly, the holster's creator):

The HuSH was featured in the March 1985 issue of Shooting Times, by Dick Metcalf; as a result of a hunt in Wyoming by a group of us from Bianchi. Gratifying that it still seems to be made by the company.

A flap accessory is available and enabled me to crawl in dirt and mud, rocks, etc. with a scoped Redhawk without any of that ever reaching the pistol or its sights.

Is that holster leather or Accu-Mold? That style is the best way
to carry a handgun especially when carrying a rifle slung over
opposite shoulder. Here is an Alaskan Crossfire (shown below)
that I only wore once. The last time I hunted.
After I got through hunting I gave all of my long guns away,
including a nice old model 70 Winchester 30:06. My wife
said you did what? Are you crazy? The name stuck.

Here's a pair for N frames, the floral is Bucheimer 5" and S&W 4" 21/24.

ETA:
As Phil stated in his post, "generally inexpensive"... I think I have $30 in the above pair.

I have always liked the S&W field style holsters and have most of their frame sizes in 4". I like the supported trigger guards on them.
Steve

I have a Hunter that came with one of the model 14's with a 6" barrel. Took the K frame out and have never put it back in the holster. Don't have a photo, but it's for sure not a BBQ holster. :-)

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I carry this rig in the field when the field might be populated by the big
bruins. Functional as a field holster and yet not too hard on the eyes.

BTW the holster is Hunter's 3100 series. 1100 is the plain version.
2100 is basket weave. 3100 is floral carved.
